    Description: Advances in genome technology have facilitated a new understanding of the historical and genetic processes crucial to rapid phenotypic evolution under domestication. To understand the process of dog diversification better, we conducted an extensive genome-wide survey of more than 48,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms in dogs and their wild progenitor, the grey wolf. Here we show that dog breeds share a higher proportion of multi-locus haplotypes unique to grey wolves from the Middle East, indicating that they are a dominant source of genetic diversity for dogs rather than wolves from east Asia, as suggested by mitochondrial DNA sequence data. Furthermore, we find a surprising correspondence between genetic and phenotypic/functional breed groupings but there are exceptions that suggest phenotypic diversification depended in part on the repeated crossing of individuals with novel phenotypes. Our results show that Middle Eastern wolves were a critical source of genome diversity, although interbreeding with local wolf populations clearly occurred elsewhere in the early history of specific lineages.     Description: Morphological diversity within closely related species is an essential aspect of evolution and adaptation. Mutations in the Melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) gene contribute to pigmentary diversity in natural populations of fish, birds, and many mammals. However, melanism in the gray wolf, Canis lupus, is caused by a different melanocortin pathway component, the K locus, that encodes a beta-defensin protein that acts as an alternative ligand for Mc1r. We show that the melanistic K locus mutation in North American wolves derives from past hybridization with domestic dogs, has risen to high frequency in forested habitats, and exhibits a molecular signature of positive selection.     Notes: Abstract Phenol electropolymerization to polyoxyphenylene coatings on phosphated steel and phosphated galvanized steel, normally impossible under the conditions allowing effective coating formation on either steel or zinc, is activated by cathodic deposition of zinc. A critical zinc amount has been found to be necessary to suppress electrochemical processes competitive with electropolymerization and induce coating formation with nearly 100% efficiency. SEM analysis showed that this critical amount of zinc corresponded to the formation of a low number of zinc nuclei emerging at the surface of the phosphate layer, on which, however, polyoxyphenylene was formed as a continuous coating. A.c. impedance tests showed that initial barrier properties are worse for coatings grown on zinc-plated phosphated samples than for those grown on steel from the same solutions. However, the long term corrosion resistance is much better in the former case, the improvement being largely associated with zinc cathodic protection

    Notes: Abstract The synthesis of thin films of indium and indium-gallium antimonides was performed by a method involving electrodeposition steps and thermal annealing. Successive layers of the elements were deposited in the order Sb, In and, when necessary, Ga. The binary InSb compound was obtained when annealing was performed at temperatures slightly higher than the In melting point. Ternary InxGa1-xSb films were also prepared by a similar method. These were found to consist of a single phase for x〉〉-0.91 and of two phases, one rich in In and the other in Ga, for x≤0.84. The cubic lattice parameter was determined for all phases and used for calculating their composition, assuming Vegard's law as valid.

    Notes: Abstract As-Sb alloys have been cathodically deposited onto nickel electrodes from acidic aqueous solutions containing citric acid. The effect of complexing agent concentration, pH, angular speed of the RDE and temperature on deposition rate and alloy composition have been monitored. Increasing citric acid concentration and pH decrease the deposition current and the antimony content of the alloys (measured by EDX analyses). The opposite effect is observed when rotation speed or temperature are increased. Under most combinations of citric acid concentration and pH, the steady-state i/E curves show the current peak already observed in a previous investigation. The morphology and structure of the alloys have been studied with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Alloys containing ⩾ 74% Sb were found to be crystalline (hexagonal system).

    Notes: Abstract An electrochemical method for the preparation of GaSb polycrystalline thin films is presented involving sequential deposition of Sb and Ga films (from an acid SbCl3 solution and an alkaline GaCl3 solution respectively) and a mild thermal annealing. The annealed deposits were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and secondary ion mass spectrometry. An alternative approach based on the simultaneous deposition of Sb and Ga was unsuccessful.
