Notes: We report the extension of measurements of the 9Be spin-lattice relaxation rate in UBe13 from 300 up to 1000 K. They reflect the fluctuating local magnetic field at the site of the 9Be nuclei. Above about 100 K, there appears a new contribution in addition to the rate observed at lower temperatures. The high temperature contribution is modeled in terms of the thermal excitation of low-lying states of the U3+ ion along lines used by Felton et al. to explain their measurements of the specific heat. Our results indicate a splitting of 200±20 K between the ground and excited states of the system, and a lifetime of 8×10−14 s for the excited states (width =95 K).

Notes: A vapor transport technique has been used to produce large, high quality C60 single crystals. This technique, which uses an open tube method with a flowing helium gas carrier, eliminates the crystal size limitation found in the vacuum sublimation growth method.

Notes: Abstract Improved superconducting properties were observed in melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7-y ceramic material. The inductive current density has a small field dependence up to 5.5 T over a wide temperature range. The field and temperature dependences of the magnetic properties are similar to the behavior found in single crystals. Values of the intragrain critical current density in melt-texture samples have the same order of magnitude as in single crystals. The reduced porosity and improved grain alignment help to probe intrinsic physical properties that depend on crystallographic orientation. Thus experiments similar to those involving single crystals are possible. The modified Bean critical state model applied to single crystals can also be used in these melt-textured samples. Thus, it is possible to use melt-textured samples in some basic research which originally required the use of single crystals.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the zero-field-cooled magnetic relaxation in the melt-textured ErBa2Cu3O7−δ ceramic material. The magnetic relaxation rate dM/d (ln t) exhibits strong temperature and field dependence in the temperature range up to 80 K and the field range up to 5.5 T. The magnetic relaxation behavior observed in the melt-textured ErBa2Cu3O7−δ ceramic sample is similar to that in single crystals. The magnetization to noise ratio is much improved, in particular, for temperatures approaching the superconducting transition temperature and for low magnetic fields. Several theoretical models were explored to fit the experimental data.

Notes: Abstract The zero-field-cooled magnetization relaxation has been studied over wide temperature and field ranges on iron-doped YBa2Cu3O7−y single crystals. The relationship between the twin boundary density, which depends on the iron composition, and the pinning strength of the flux lines is determined systematically. For magnetic fields up to 1 T the inductive critical current density decreases as the iron composition increases. The Bean critical state model and the Anderson-Kim thermally activated flux-creep model are utilized to analyze and interpret the experimental results.

Notes: Abstract The four-CuO2-layer TlBa2Ca3Cu4O11−δ compound has a high superconducting transition temperature of 128 K and strong interlayer coupling. We have performed magnetic experiments on single crystals of TlBa2Ca3Cu4O11−δ, which include hysteresis loop, irreversibility line and time relaxation measurements. From these measurements, we observed the large critical current density, high irreversibility line and strongly temperature dependent flux creep rate in the TlBa2Ca3Cu4O11-gd single crystals.

Notes: Abstract Recent theoretical calculations have suggested the coupling of electrons to high-energy oxygen phonons as an explanation of superconductivity in the Ba1−x K x BiO3−y system. We have synthesized high-quality single crystals of the material and have examined the behaviors of critical field and critical current parameters as a function of changes in the oxygen content and in the Ba/K ratio. We have determined, via positron lifetime spectroscopy and singlecrystal X-ray measurements, that the oxygen stoichiometry in this system can be varied without significant impact on the metal atom sublattice. These results facilitate an investigation of the dependence of critical parameters on dopant and defect levels in this system.

Notes: Abstract A simplified technique for synthesizing high-quality millimeter-sized single-crystals of K3C60 is reported. The preparation method consists of a two-step process where pure C60 crystals are first grown and later doped with potassium vapor. The undoped crystals are grown using an open-tube vapor transport with a flowing helium gas carrier. Doping occurs in a highvacuum environment inside a specialized quartz tube which allows phase purity to be monitored via magnetization measurements of the superconducting state. Utilizing the aforementioned procedure, one can attain samples with magnetically determined superconducting transition widths (10–90% diamagnetic shielding) of less than 1 K.

Notes: Abstract Polycrystalline samples with superconducting transition temperatures higher than 130 K have been synthesized in the system Tl1−x Hg x Ba2Ca2Cu3O8+δ withx=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9. The magnetization data of these samples as a function of applied magnetic field up to 5.5 T are measured in a SQUID magnetometer over a wide temperature range. These hysteresis curves are analyzed with the Bean critical-state model to estimate the intragrain critical current density,J c . The results show that the values ofJ c are comparable to the values of YBCO and the early reported pure Hg-1223 sample. The maximum value ofJ c occurs in the (Tl0.7Hg0.3)-1223 sample with 5.9×106 A/cm2 at 10 K and 1.1×104 A/cm2 at 77 K in 1 T. Also, an exponential decay ofJ c with temperature has been found in these Tl1−x Hg x7-1223 compounds, indicating the presence of weak links.
