    Notes: Abstract— Sphere-reinforced metal-matrix composites are modelled as a three dimensional array of hexagonal cylinders, each one with a broken or intact spherical reinforcement at its centre. Using this model, the stress-strain response of the composite in uniaxial tension was obtained. A parametrical analysis of the influence of matrix and reinforcement properties as well as volume fraction on the ductility of these composites was performed. It was found that the decrease in ductility with respect to the unreinforced matrix depended mainly on the reinforcement/matrix strength ratio and on the defect distribution in the particulates.

    Notes: Abstract— Both the fatigue limit and the fatigue life of a structural member are highly dependent upon its surface condition and on the microcrack growth rate. A model based on linear elastic fracture mechanics has been developed which involves both parameters and predicts with good accuracy the available experimental results. The factors that must be modified in order to improve the fatigue behaviour of cold drawn eutectoid steel wires are indicated.

    Notes: Abstract— A numerical study of the influence of crack surface roughness on fatigue crack closure is presented. Calculations are performed with a research oriented finite difference code suitably modified to study fatigue crack propagation and closure. A powerful algorithm of contact detection is used to ascertain the interaction between the crack surfaces and a penalty forces method is employed to avoid node-to-node and node-to-face penetration. The results indicate that the key controlling factor of roughness-induced fatigue crack closure is the tilt angle between crack branches and the average direction of crack propagation. Crack opening and closure loads increase with the tilt angle, and when plasticity effects are negligible, they are not affected by the crack branch length. Numerical results are also able to explain the large closure levels measured experimentally in 2124 Al alloy fatigue cracks.

    Notes: The effect of Y2O3 content on the flexure strength of melt-grown Al2O3–ZrO2 eutectics was studied in a temperature range of 25°–1427°C. The processing conditions were carefully controlled to obtain a constant microstructure independent of Y2O3 content. The rod microstructure was made up of alternating bands of fine and coarse dispersions of irregular ZrO2 platelets oriented along the growth axis and embedded in the continuous Al2O3 matrix. The highest flexure strength at ambient temperature was found in the material with 3 mol% Y2O3 in relation to ZrO2(Y2O3). Higher Y2O3 content did not substantially modify the mechanical response; however, materials with 0.5 mol% presented a significant degradation in the flexure strength because of the presence of large defects. They were nucleated at the Al2O3–ZrO2 interface during the martensitic transformation of ZrO2 on cooling and propagated into the Al2O3 matrix driven by the tensile residual stresses generated by the transformation. The material with 3 mol% Y2O3 retained 80% of the flexure strength at 1427°C, whereas the mechanical properties of the eutectic with 0.5 mol% Y2O3 dropped rapidly with temperature as a result of extensive microcracking.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a decorrelating detector for DS-CDMAasynchronous systems over multipath fading channels. The decorrelatingreceiver applies the inverse correlation matrix of signature waveformsto detect the received signal. A procedure for finding such an inversematrix is developed. This procedure employs the reciprocal basis,derived from the basis of normalized user signatures, to cancelsimultaneously both the multiuser and the intersymbolinterference. The proposed multiuser detector operates over a finitedetection window, and the only restriction imposed on the set of signaturesis that the signatures must be independent at the receiver end. If the channelis slowly variant, the detectorcan be very efficient for high bit rate transmissions. Theoreticalbounds for the multiuser interference are obtained. Simulationresults, in which both binary and non-binary sequences are used,reveal that the behaviour of the detector approaches the single userbound when an adequate set of signatures is employed. The reducedcomplexity of this detector indicates that it could be a good candidatefor practical implementation.

    Notes: Abstract 7-Hydroxy-2′,3′,4′-trimethoxyflavone, (C18H16O6),M r =328.32 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space groupPbna, with the following crystal data:a=8.853(2),b=12.870(2),c=26.293(3)Å,V=2996(1)Å3,Z=8, MoKα, μ=0.67 cm−1,D c =1.454 g·cm−3,F(000)=1376,T=294K. The structure was solved by direct-methods and has been refined by full-matrix least-squares methods to a finalR value (F〉σ(F)) of 0.0496. The molecule is not planar, the dihedral angle between the phenyl ring and the fused ring system is 27.3°. There are no intramolecular hydrogen bonds, but intermolecular short hydrogen contacts exist between hydroxyl hydrogen and carbonyl oxygen atoms.

    Notes: Abstract Hydroformylation of ethylene and CO hydrogenation were studied over cobalt-based catalysts derived from reaction of Co2(CO)8 with ZnO, MgO and La2O3 supports. At 433 K a similar activity sequence was reached for both reactions: Co/ ZnO 〉 Co/La2O3 〉 Co/MgO. This confirms the deep analogy between hydroformylation and CO hydrogenation into alcohols. In the CO hydrogenation the selectivity towards alcohol mixture (C1-C3) was found to be near 100% at 433 K for a conversion of 6% over the Co/ZnO catalyst; this catalyst showed oxo selectivity higher than 98% in the hydroformylation of ethylene. Magnetic experiments showed that no metallic cobalt particles were formed at 433 K. It is suggested that the active site for the step that is common to both reactions is related to the surface homonuclear Co2+/[Co(CO)4]− ion-pairing species.
