    Notes: Restoration of California native perennial grassland is often initiated with cultivation to reduce the density and cover of non-native annual grasses before seeding with native perennials. Tillage is known to adversely impact agriculturally cultivated land; thus changes in soil biological functions, as indicated by carbon (C) turnover and C retention, may also be negatively affected by these restoration techniques. We investigated a restored perennial grassland in the fourth year after planting Nassella pulchra, Elymus glaucus, and Hordeum brachyantherum ssp. californicum for total soil C and nitrogen (N), microbial biomass C, microbial respiration, CO2 concentrations in the soil atmosphere, surface efflux of CO2, and root distribution (0- to 15-, 15- to 30-, 30- to 60-, and 60- to 80-cm depths). A comparison was made between untreated annual grassland and plots without plant cover still maintained by tillage and herbicide. In the uppermost layer (0- to 15-cm depth), total C, microbial biomass C, and respiration were lower in the tilled, bare soil than in the grassland soils, as was CO2 efflux from the soil surface. Root length near perennial bunchgrasses was lower at the surface and greater at lower depths than in the annual grass–dominated areas; a similar but less pronounced trend was observed for root biomass. Few differences in soil biological or chemical properties occurred below 15-cm depth, except that at lower depths, the CO2 concentration in the soil atmosphere was lower in the plots without vegetation, possibly from reduced production of CO2 due to the lack of root respiration. Similar microbiological properties in soil layers below 15-cm depth suggest that deeper microbiota rely on more recalcitrant C sources and are less affected by plant removal than in the surface layer, even after 6 years. Without primary production, restoration procedures with extended periods of tillage and herbicide applications led to net losses of C during the plant-free periods. However, at 4 years after planting native grasses, soil microbial biomass and activity were nearly the same as the former conditions represented by annual grassland, suggesting high resilience to the temporary disturbance caused by tillage.

    Notes: Root architecture is described for intact root systems of cultivated (Lactuca sativa L.) and wild (L. serriola L.) lettuce, grown for 5 to 6 weeks in greenhouse pot and cylinder experiments in coarse-textured soil. L. sativa cv. Salinas and a sclinas line of L. serriola attained the same biomass at 4 to 6 weeks after planting. Root biomass allocation was also similar, but root architecture differed. In the top zone along the tap root (0 to 5 cm), Salinas tended to produce more laterals, a greater total root length, and more external links (segments that originate at a branch point and end in a meristem) than wild lettuce. In the 5 to 55cm zone of the tap root, these measures were greater in the wild species. These patterns of root structure were generally corroborated by a second cylinder study with a different pair of L. sativa and L. serriola. Regressions of root structural traits were made against total root dry weight as a means to compare root architecture independently of the size of the root system. Regressions demonstrated that production of root segments differed between the two species; for example the slope for the regression of summed external link length in the top 0 to 5 cm with total root dry weight was significantly higher for Salinas, indicating that the rate of construction in the top 0 to 5cm was greater for cultivated than for wild lettuce. Yet, from 5 cm depth to the tap root tip, the rate of construction of external link length was greater in L. serriola. For many of these types of regression, r2 and mean slope ± SE suggested that more variation occurred in cultivated than wild lettuce, yet genetic heterogeneity was probably low within the studied taxa. Inadvertent selection may have occurred in the breeding of cultivated lettuce varieties for increased root growth in the surface zone where water and fertilizer are applied, and for greater plasticity in construction of root segments, which might maximize the efficiency of exploitation of soil moisture and nutrients.

    Notes: We examined the effect of soil NH4+ and NO3− content upon the root systems of field-grown tomatoes, and the influence of constant, low concentrations of NH4+ or NO3− upon root growth in solution culture. In two field experiments, few roots were present in soil zones with low extractable NH4+ or NO3−; they increased to a maximum in zones having 2μg-N NO3− g−1 soil and 6 μg-N NO3= g−1 soil, but decreased in zones having higher NH4+ or NO3− levels. Root branching was relatively insensitive to available mineral nitrogen. Plants maintained in solution culture at constant levels of NH4+ or NO3−, had similar shoot biomass, but all root parameters – biomass, length, branching and area – were greater under NH4 nutrition than under NO3−. These results suggest that the size of root system depends on a functional equilibrium between roots and shoots (Brouwer 1967) and on the balance between soil NH4+ and NO3−.

    Notes: Abstract   The effects of a variable water supply on the water use, growth and yield of two crisphead and one romaine (i.e., Cos) lettuce cultivar were examined in a field experiment using a line source sprinkler system that produced a range of water regimes that occur in growers fields. Four locations at increasing distances from the main line were monitored through the season (i.e., from thinning to harvest, 28–63 days after planting (DAP)). These locations at the end of the season corresponded to: (1) rewatering to field capacity (FC); (2) watering with a volume 13% below that required in the field capacity treatment (0.87*FC); (3) 30% below FC (0.70*FC); and (4) 55% below FC (0.45*FC). A linear production function for dry matter accumulation and fresh weight vs. crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was determined for lettuce during this period, giving a water use efficiency for dry matter of 1.86 g m–2 mm–1 and for fresh weight of 48 g m–2 mm–1. For lettuce irrigated to field capacity, ETc between thinning and harvest was 146 mm; maximum crop coefficients of 0.81–1.02 were obtained at maturity (55–63 DAP). For the three irrigation treatments receiving the largest water application, ETc was higher in the Cos culivar than in the two crisphead lettuce cultivars which had similar ETc. Plant fresh weight was more sensitive than dry weight to reduction in water supply. In the FC treatment, root length density and soil water extraction were greatest in the top 0–45 cm, and decreased rapidly below 45 cm depth. Soil water extraction by roots increased at lower depths when irrigation was reduced. Instantaneous rates of leaf photosynthesis and leaf water potential showed no response to the irrigation treatments in this study, despite differences in biomass production. Evaporation was determined to be the major component of ETc for 45 of the 63 days of the growing season. The large loss of water by evaporation during mid-season and the apparent insensitivity of lettuce to the volume of irrigation during this period may provide an opportunity for reducing irrigation applications.
