Notes: Examines the difference in perceptions of 18 carrier selections factors between import shippers, export shippers, and international containership carriers. MANOVA was used to determine differences between the three groups. Suggests that there are significant differences between import shippers and carriers; export shippers and carriers; and import shippers and export shippers. Significant differences between the import shipper and carrier groups were found on the loss and damage and equipment availability factors. Significant differences between the export shipper and carrier groups were found on the rate changes, service frequency, financial stability, service changes, and equipment availability factors. The only significant difference between the import shipper and export shipper groups was found on the door-to-door transportation rates factor.

Notes: Presents a conceptual framework and a set of research hypotheses that are intended to help explain the interfunctional co-ordination between the logistics and information technology functions. Much has been written over the past decade regarding the strategic potential of the logistics and information technology functions for creating customer value, process efficiencies, and differential advantage for the firm. Additionally, the interrelationships that exist within business organizations have received considerable discussion within the literature. However, little attention has been paid to the co-ordination of the logistics and information technology functions. The framework presented is based on a combined review of the logistics, information technology, and interfunctional co-ordination literature. The constructs of interaction and collaboration are utilized to explain how differing levels of interfunctional co-ordination affect the firm's logistics information system. Initial support for the conceptual framework is provided by qualitative research. Finally, research results and concluding comments on implications for practitioners and future research are discussed.

Notes: Abstract BiOCl is very efficient as a catalyst for the oxidative coupling of CH4 to yield C2 products, conversions of more than 20 percent and ratios of C2H4/C2H6 from 30 to 60, depending upon the precise conditions, being obtained at ca 700 °C. Its longevity, however, is rather poor: under operating conditions the solid lacks structural stability. Although LaOCl and SmOCl, each of which is isostructural with BiOCl, are inferior catalysts so far as C2H4/C2H6 ratios are concerned (0.3 to 0.6), they have superior stability. The same is true of the solid-solutions (Bi0.5,La0.5) OCl, the structural parameters of which were determined by X-ray powder Rietveld analysis. Both (Bi0.5, Sm0.5) OCl and (Bi0.5, La0.5) OCl yield C2H4/C2H6 ratios of close to unity at 700 °C.

Notes: Summary Distributions for first hitting times in random walks (skip-free Markov chains on the non-negative integers) are studied. Their probability generating functions are expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of probability transition submatrices. The study of first hitting times leads to several classes of infinitely divisible distributions closely related to the Bondesson class of generalized convolutions of mixtures of exponential distributions which arises from the study of first hitting times in birth-death processes. Some properties of these classes are derived from their characterization by Pick functions.

Notes: Abstract The EM algorithm is a popular method for maximizing a likelihood in the presence of incomplete data. When the likelihood has multiple local maxima, the parameter space can be partitioned into domains of convergence, one for each local maximum. In this paper we investigate these domains for the location family generated by the t-distribution. We show that, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, these domains need not be connected sets. As an extreme case we give an example of a domain which consists of an infinite union of disjoint open intervals. Thus the convergence behaviour of the EM algorithm can be quite sensitive to the starting point.

Notes: The response of mandibular bone to identical geometry LTI carbon, carbon-coated aluminum oxide, and uncoated aluminum oxide blade-type dental implants in baboons for 2 years was evaluated using histologic, microradiographic, and scanning electron microscopic methods. In addition, a quantitative histologic analysis was performed identifying the type, amount, and distribution of tissue surrounding the dental implant systems. This is the final phase of a study investigating the effect of implant elastic modulus and implant surface chemical composition on the performance of dental implants. Previous studies have utilized clinical and radiographic evaluations, postretrieval mechanical testing, and finite element stress analysis to evaluate the dental implant performance. The results of the histologic study revealed a direct implant-bone interface with no intervening soft tissue in 16 of the 21 implants (76%). A fibrous tissue interface was observed in 5 of 21 implants (24%). Quantitative histologic results for the implants with a direct implant-bone interface showed statistically larger crestal cortical plates (p 〈 0.05) and greater area fraction crestal cancellous bone (p 〈 0.05) in the LTI carbon implant compared to the carbon-coated and uncoated aluminum oxide implants. The carbon-coated and uncoated aluminum oxide implants demonstrated statistically greater area fraction cancellous bone at the inferior region of the implant (p 〈 0.05) and thinned and reduced crestal cortical plates when compared to the LTI carbon implants. The results indicate that significant stress shielding of the crestal bone had occurred with the rigid carbon-coated and uncoated aluminum oxide implants when compared to the LTI carbon implants which had a material elastic modulus similar to cortical bone. Based upon the histologic results, it appears that the LTI carbon implants with the direct implant-bone interface exhibited a greater potential for long-term successful performance compared to the aluminum oxide substrate implants.
