Description: The Barossa Basin is a complex hydrogeological environment containing a sedimentary aquifer system surrounded and underlain by a dual porosity fractured rock aquifer. The hydraulic relationship between the fractured rock aquifer and the sedimentary aquifers is poorly understood. The difficulties in describing the movement of groundwater through dual porosity media such as a fractured rock aquifer are well documented. While groundwater flow in the sedimentary aquifers can be adequately described using porous media flow techniques in the Barossa Basin, our understanding of interconnectivity between individual sedimentary aquifers is again poor. The Basin itself is narrow and, immediately adjacent to the Stockwell Fault on the eastern side of the valley, relatively deep (~200 m). Sediments deposited into the trough consisted of mainly discontinuous sequences of overlapping sands and carbonaceous clays. This was followed by the deposition of gravels, sands and clays that form the Barossa Valley as it is today. Various authors have sub-divided the geology into individual hydrostratigraphical units. However, a review of the literature highlighted inconsistencies in the number of aquifers recognised, their exact spatial distribution within the Basin, and that there have been changes in nomenclature that are not satisfactorily described. This has resulted in some confusion that requires clarification ...

Description: Research Infrastructures (RI) of the Environment Domain as defined by ESFRI cover the main four subdomains of the complex Earth system (Atmosphere, Marine, Solid Earth, and Biodiversity/Terrestrial Ecosystems), thus forming the cluster of European Environmental and Earth System Research Infrastructures (ENVRIs). The overarching goal is that at the end of the proposed project, all participating RIs have built a set of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data services which enhances the efficiency and productivity of researchers, supports innovation, enables data- and knowledge-based decisions and connects the ENVRI Cluster to the European Open Science Cloud. The focus of the proposed work is on the provision of an environmental metadata catalogue describing in detail the FAIR services produced (or enhanced) in each subdomain; the complete set of thematic data services and tools provided by the ENVRI cluster can then be exposed to the EOSC catalogue of services.

Description: The ability to use data produced by different sources (social networks, governments, weather sensors etc.) is widely recognized as a key to capitalize the value of data. In the scientific field, such usage may incredibly boost the innovation and foster new discoveries. However, one of the main hurdles is currently represented by the difficulties in achieving the required interoperability to provide integrated access to multi-disciplinary data. The current work presents a metadata-driven approach that uses in a combined way metadata, semantics, and services as key components for providing integrated access to heterogeneous data sources. The integration occurs within a central data integration system, which is driven by a rich metadata catalogue and that can present the data provided by the different data sources in a harmonised way to the end user, by means of RESTful APIs. A real application demonstrating metadata-driven semantic and service interoperability for achieving homogeneous access to multi-disciplinary heterogeneous data sources is illustrated in the case of EPOS, a Research Infrastructure for Solid Earth Science. The advantages in terms of ease of maintenance, of flexibility in plugging different standard without perturbating communities’ long-lasting technical practices, and of ability to track provenance are discussed. Future work for providing open-source implementation of a system built following the proposed approach is also envisaged.

Description: Data management is a key activity when Open Data stewardship through services complying with the FAIR principles is required, as it happens in many National and European initiatives. Existing guidelines and tools facilitate the drafting of Data Management Plans by focusing on a set of common parameters or questions. In this paper we describe how data management is carried out in EPOS, the European Research Infrastructure for providing access to integrated data and services in the solid Earth domain. EPOS relies on a federated model and is committed to remain operational in the long term. In EPOS, five key dimensions were identified for the Federated Data Management, namely the management of: thematic data; e-infrastructure for data integration; community of data providers committed to data provision processes; sustainability; and policies. On the basis of the EPOS experience, which is to some extent applicable to other research infrastructures, we propose additional components that may extend the EU Horizon 2020 Data Management Guidelines template, thus comprehensively addressing the Federated Data Management in the context of distributed Research Infrastructures.

Notes: Electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopic techniques are applied to reveal the mechanisms of crystallization of free standing 75-nm-thick thin films of ferroelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT). Sol-gel methods, followed by pyrolysis at 350 °C, were used to provide a common starting point after which a variety of rapid-thermal annealing (RTA) experiments in the temperature range 400–700 °C were made in argon, oxygen, and nitrogen/hydrogen atmospheres. The results are interpreted in terms of a crystal chemical analysis, which points out that partial pressure of oxygen and heating rate are important experimental parameters which must be controlled if ferroelectric perovskite-type Pb2(Zr,Ti)2O6, rather than pyrochlore-type Pb2(Zr,Ti)2O6+X, where 0〈X〈1 or −1〈X〈0, is to be obtained after the RTA step. Thus significant improvements in the crystallization of perovskite-type PZT were clearly demonstrated by using argon atmospheres for the RTA step. The results may have significance for the production of high-quality ferroelectric thin films, with improved switching and fatigue characteristics, since even small amounts of the pyrochlore phase may prove detrimental for these properties.

Notes: Networks have been a research issue in public administration for many years. Because of the difficulty of measuring networks, they have often been treated as a metaphor, a conceptual scheme, or a management technique (networking). The work on networks in public administration is almost all of the case study and rarely of the comparative case variety. This article presents the results of two studies of networks using social network analysis as a technique for studying structural relationships between organizations. This technique is utilized to show both the research and practical potential of network analysis as an evaluation methodology for organizations that jointly produce a service. In the first study, the network provides mental health services to seriously mentally ill adults. In the second study, the network attempts to prevent young people from abusing drugs and alcohol. The two studies were undertaken for different reasons. The first was an elaborate comparative study of four mental health networks and the relationship between network design and performance. The second was a much simpler consulting effort to help a local prevention partnership create linkages to other community organizations. However, in both of the studies the goal was to measure the structural ties in the network based on various types of relationships that exist in a given field of practice. These linkages are ties that bind the network together and become data that can be used to compare networks on their degree and type of integration. The article makes the argument that links in a network are one way that scholars can compare networks in similar or different policy domains. At the same time, the article argues that analysing linkages in an organization’s network is an effective and practical means of determining how well integrated any given organization is in a network.
