    Description: Vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) 1 and 2 show a mutually exclusive distribution in the adult brain that suggests specialization for synapses with different properties of release. Consistent with this distribution, inactivation of the VGLUT1 gene silenced a subset of excitatory neurons in the adult. However, the same cell populations exhibited VGLUT1-independent transmission early in life. Developing hippocampal neurons transiently coexpressed VGLUT2 and VGLUT1 at distinct synaptic sites with different short-term plasticity. The loss of VGLUT1 also reduced the reserve pool of synaptic vesicles.     Description: Sighs are long, deep breaths expressing sadness, relief or exhaustion. Sighs also occur spontaneously every few minutes to reinflate alveoli, and sighing increases under hypoxia, stress, and certain psychiatric conditions. Here we use molecular, genetic, and pharmacologic approaches to identify a peptidergic sigh control circuit in murine brain. Small neural subpopulations in a key breathing control centre, the retrotrapezoid nucleus/parafacial respiratory group (RTN/pFRG), express bombesin-like neuropeptide genes neuromedin B (Nmb) or gastrin-releasing peptide (Grp). These project to the preBotzinger Complex (preBotC), the respiratory rhythm generator, which expresses NMB and GRP receptors in overlapping subsets of ~200 neurons. Introducing either neuropeptide into preBotC or onto preBotC slices, induced sighing or in vitro sigh activity, whereas elimination or inhibition of either receptor reduced basal sighing, and inhibition of both abolished it. Ablating receptor-expressing neurons eliminated basal and hypoxia-induced sighing, but left breathing otherwise intact initially.     Notes: The magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability is a mechanism by which waves on the perpendicular fast Alfvén-ion Bernstein branch can be excited through cyclotron resonance with an energetic ion population. It is a candidate emission mechanism for the superthermal ion cyclotron radiation, apparently associated with the products of fusion reactions, that has been observed from tokamak plasmas. In the present paper, an extended shell model is adopted for the energetic ion distribution function, fα(v)∼nα exp[−(v−v0)2/vT2]. An analytical formulation of the dispersion relation is obtained, whose numerical solution yields quantitative information on the role of vT in stabilizing wave growth at ion cyclotron harmonics. The results show that, for typical plasma parameters of interest, the degree of instability is significantly depressed, relative to its level for vT=0, once vT/v0(approximately-equal-to)0.1. Gaps appear in typical multiple cyclotron harmonic excitation patterns for 0.1≤vT/v0≤0.2, and most harmonics are stable for vT/v0≥0.25. Thus the energetic ion shell-driven magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability typically occurs only when the shell is relatively narrow in velocity space.

    Notes: Intense superthermal ion cyclotron emission (ICE) has been observed from tokamak plasmas. The power spectrum displays narrow peaks at multiple harmonics of the background ion cyclotron frequency [Cottrell and Dendy, Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 33 (1988)] in Ohmic deuterium plasmas, and the radiation appears to be driven by the fusion ion population in the edge plasma. Theoretical investigation of this phenomenon may be rewarding, in terms of the information about the behavior of energetic ions in tokamaks that can be extracted from ICE observations. The interpretation presented here is based on the resonant excitation of fast Alfvén waves with ion Bernstein waves supported by an energetic ion species (α), in the presence of a more numerous thermal ion species (i). Because the ion cyclotron frequencies may be commensurate (lΩα=sΩi for some low integers l,s), and observations indicate that ω is comparable in magnitude to Ωi, the standard theory [Belikov and Kolesnichenko, Sov. Phys. Tech. Phys. 20, 1146 (1976)] which assumes ω(very-much-greater-than)Ωi is not immediately applicable, and is accordingly extended here to the low-frequency regime. The results show that excitation of the fast Alfvén wave at proton cyclotron harmonics can occur for fusion proton concentrations nα/ni as low as 10−7, and that multiple cyclotron harmonics can be simultaneously unstable. Furthermore, while fusion protons born at 3.0 MeV are above the energy threshold required to drive the instability, the other primary fusion products in deuterium—1.0 MeV tritons and 0.82 MeV helium-3 nuclei—fall below it, consistent with the observation that radiation at cyclotron harmonics of the latter is not detected. However, the mechanism considered here cannot easily explain the generation of radiation which is observed at deuterium cyclotron harmonics that are degenerate with proton half-harmonics.

    Notes: A novel expression has been developed for the instantaneous rate of radical copolymerization, Rp, based on a combined form of the diffusion-controlled and terminal models of copolymerization. This treatment introduces a characteristic parameter, θ, which can be correlated to the monomer feed composition, β, empirically. In this connection, two equations have been proposed for θ, to cope with the drastic change in the Rp versus β relationships when the θ values drop below unity. The validity of these two-parameter formulations are positively tested by the rate data of a number of representative copolymerizations, including the ideal and alternating systems. It is found that the present approach to Rp is more practical, adaptable, and reliable than the other contemporary kinetic schemes of binary copolymerization reactions.
