    Notes: In the past, traditional lot-sizing decisions were based on total cost functions that did not explicitly consider quality costs such as inspection of incoming materials and damage costs incurred when faulty material slipped through inspection. Rather, the cost of maintaining quality for a batch was incorporated into the fixed ordering costs of the batch. Provides an adaptation of the traditional lot-sizing model that does explicitly consider quality costs. Derives an expression for the optimal lot-size under such conditions. Bayesian methods are provided to estimate this expression. Includes examples to illustrate the use of this approach. Demonstrates that the traditional approach inappropriately inflates estimates of the economically optimal lot size.

    Notes: Recent developments in research on polyimides for high temperature applications have led to the synthesis of many new polymers. Among the criteria that determines their thermal oxidative stability, isothermal aging is one of the most important. Isothermal aging studies require that many experimental factors are controlled to provide accurate results. In this article we describe a statistical plan that compares the isothermal stability of several polyimide resins, while minimizing the variations inherent in high-temperature aging studies. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: Following partial completion of infill development in a given field, it becomes necessary to determine whether continued drilling should be pursued in the same field. The usual approaches for deciding whether to continue drilling (Swanson's mean or estimates based on lognormal methods) fail to account for variation and uncertainty. To better inform this decision, we propose implementing statistical confidence intervals (with an accompanying certainty level) for relevant features of interest. Closed form intervals and maximum likelihood based intervals for the average ultimate recovery for all wells in a field, the percent of wells in a field having ultimate recovery values above a certain benchmark value and other important features of interest are considered. Confidence intervals appropriate for both the lognormal and Weibull distribution are given. The proposed methods are illustrated with real data from 64 wells in the Devonian Richfield Dolomite of the Michigan basin (given in the appendix, Table 2). Table 1 summarizes the different confidence intervals.

    Description: Initial experiments conducted on thermal barrier coatings prepared in the newly upgraded research plasma spray facility and the burner rig test facilities are discussed. Part 1 discusses experiments which establish the spray parameters for three baseline zirconia-yttria coatings. The quality of five similar coating lots was judged primarily by their response to burner rig exposure supplemented by data from other sources such as specimen characterizations and thermal diffusivity measurements. After allowing for burner rig variability, although there appears to be an optimum density (i.e., optimum microstructure) for maximum burner rig life, the distribution tends to be rather broad about the maximum. In Part 2, new hafnia-yttria-based coatings were evaluated against both baseline and alternate zirconia-yttria coatings. The hafnia-yttria coatings and the zirconia-yttria coatings that were prepared by an alternate powder vendor were very sensitive to plasma spray parameters, in that high-quality coatings were only obtained when certain parameters were employed. The reasons for this important observation are not understood. Also not understood is that the first of two replicate specimens sprayed for Part 1 consistently performed better than the second specimen. Subsequent experiments did not display this spray order affect, possibly because a chiller was installed in the torch cooling water circuit. Also, large changes in coating density were observed after switching to a new lot of electrodes. Analyses of these findings were made possible, in part, because of the development of a sensitive density measurement technique described herein in detail. The measured thermal diffusivities did not display the expected strong relationship with porosity. This surprising result was believed to have been caused by increased microcracking of the denser coatings on the stainless steel substrates.
