Description: Genetic engineering of non-beta cells to release insulin upon feeding could be a therapeutic modality for patients with diabetes. A tumor-derived K-cell line was induced to produce human insulin by providing the cells with the human insulin gene linked to the 5'-regulatory region of the gene encoding glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). Mice expressing this transgene produced human insulin specifically in gut K cells. This insulin protected the mice from developing diabetes and maintained glucose tolerance after destruction of the native insulin-producing beta cells.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Cheung, A T -- Dayanandan, B -- Lewis, J T -- Korbutt, G S -- Rajotte, R V -- Bryer-Ash, M -- Boylan, M O -- Wolfe, M M -- Kieffer, T J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2000 Dec 8;290(5498):1959-62.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB T6G 2S2, Canada.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11110661" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract We give a short proof of the theorem of Weyl, as generalized by von Neumann, that for any hermitian operator there exists a Hilbert-Schmidt perturbation of arbitrarily small Hilbert-Schmidt norm such that the sum has purely point spectrum. The proof consists of a simple construction of the perturbation. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A6515003 00004

Notes: Abstract A generalization of the group algebra of a locally compact group is studied, by expressing the group algebra of a central group extension as the direct sum of closed *-ideals each one of which is isomorphic to such a “twisted” group algebra. In particular, the representation theory of such algebras is associated with the theory of projective representations by studying the representations of the group algebra of the group extension and the associated unitary representations of the group extension.

Notes: Abstract This completes our study of the equilibrium thermodynamics of the Huang-Yang-Luttinger model of a boson gas with a hard-sphere repulsion. In an earlier paper we obtained a lower bound on the pressure, but our proof of an upper bound held only for a truncated version of the model. In this paper we establish an upper bound on the pressure in the full model; the upper and lower bounds coincide and provide a variational formula for the pressure. The proof relies on recent second-level large deviation results for the occupation measure of the free boson gas.

Notes: Abstract For a quantum system ofn identical spins of magnitudej, we introduce an integrated density of states of definite total spin angular momentum. The underlying sequence $$\{ \mathbb{K}_n^j :n = 1,2,...\} $$ of probability measures satisfies Varadhan's large deviation principle, and converges to a degenerate distribution. We use the Berezin-Lieb Inequalities to obtain upper and lower bounds for the limiting specific free-energy of the spins interacting with a second quantum system under specified conditions on the Hamiltonian. The method is illustrated by applications to the BCS model and to the Dicke maser model.

Notes: Abstract Wendel showed that norm non-increasing isomorphisms between the group algebras of locally compact groups could be expressed in terms of group characters and topological isomorphisms. His results are extended to twisted group algebras. In particular, by applying a generalisation ofWendel's main result to twisted group algebras over the same group, it is shown that the number of such algebras is equal to the number of orbits in a 2-cohomology group overG under the action of the automorphism group ofG. An application to the twisted group algebra defined byWeyl's form of the canonical commutation relations is considered.

Notes: Abstract This paper is the final one in a series in which we investigate some models of an interacting Bose gas using Varadhan's large deviation version of Laplacian asymptotics; in it we study the equilibrium thermodynamics of the full diagonal model of a Bose gas. We obtain a formula expressing the pressure, in the thermodynamic limit, as the supremum of a functional over the space of positive bounded measures. We analyse this formula for a large class of interaction kernels and show that there is a critical temperature below which there is Bose-Einstein condensation.

Notes: Abstract This is a study of the equilibrium thermodynamics of the Huang-Yang-Luttinger model of a boson gas with a hard-sphere repulsion using large deviation methods; we contrast its properties with those of the mean field model. We prove the existence of the grand canonical pressure in the thermodynamic limit and derive two alternative expressions for the pressure as a function of the chemical potential. We prove the existence of condensate for values of the chemical potential above a critical value and verify a prediction of Thouless that there is a jump in the density of condensate at the critical value. We show also that, at fixed mean density, the density of condensate is an increasing function of the strength of the repulsive interaction. In an appendix, we give proofs of the large deviation results used in the body of the paper.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the statesφ β on theC*-algebra of Pauli spins on a one-dimensional lattice (infinitely extended in both directions) which give rise to the thermodynamic limit of the Gibbs ensemble in the two-dimensional Ising model (with nearest neighbour interaction) at inverse temperature β. We show that if β c is the known inverse critical temperature, then there exists a family {v β :β≠β c } of automorphisms of the Pauli algebra such that $$\phi _\beta = \left\{ {_{\phi _\infty \circ v_\beta ,}^{\phi _0 \circ v_\beta ,} } \right. _{\beta 〉 \beta _c .}^{0 \leqslant \beta〈 \beta _c } $$ .
