Description: Surface expression of the CD45 tyrosine phosphatase is essential for the T cell antigen receptor (TCR) to couple optimally with its second messenger pathways. CD45 may be required to dephosphorylate a TCR-activated protein tyrosine kinase, which then transduces an activation signal from the TCR. A chimeric molecule that contained extracellular and transmembrane sequences from an allele of a major histocompatibility class I molecule and cytoplasmic sequences of CD45 restored TCR signaling in a CD45-deficient mutant T cell line. Thus, expression of the complex extracellular domain of CD45 is not required for the TCR to couple to its signaling machinery.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hovis, R R -- Donovan, J A -- Musci, M A -- Motto, D G -- Goldman, F D -- Ross, S E -- Koretzky, G A -- CA56050-01/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA56843-02/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1993 Apr 23;260(5107):544-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Internal Medicine, University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City 52242.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8475387" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract The wear surface and debris of three rubber compounds (NR, PBD and NR/PBD/SBR), worn on a modified blade abrader, were fractal. The fractal dimension of the wear surface was: (1) limited to a finite range, and if the wear mechanism remained the same; (2) independent of the wear load; and (3) the basis for creating a master fractal plot by a shift factor that (4) decreased linearly with wear load. The fractal dimension of wear was determined on the basis of profilometer traces and showed that the wear load affected the scale of the wear process. The fractal dimension of the debris also increased with the wear load and is thought to be a function of the agglomeration mechanism during wear.

Notes: Abstract A new, buckled plate (BP) test has been used to measure transverse toughness as the parameter characterizing interfacial adhesion in unidirectional, continuous-fibre composites. The test is simple, with advantages over other interfacial methods. The theory and experimental details are presented. The results of BP tests are discussed for polycarbonate/carbon fibre composites. Evaluations have been made with regard to specimen dimensions, testing speed, crack length, modulus, fibre volume fraction, and processing conditions. Transverse toughness is a sensitive measure of the interfacial adhesion, giving results similar to transverse tensile strength. The test has also been used to measure longitudinal toughness. This test should be widely applicable to many composite systems.

Notes: Abstract A new fracture mechanics specimen, the buckled plate specimen, has been developed with the attractive property that the crack driving force is independent of crack size during constant deflection tests. The mechanics analysis and results of lgepal assisted slow crack growth in polyethylene are presented as verification.

Notes: Igepal assisted environmental stress cracking (ESC) of LDPE has shown three characteristic regions with increasing crack driving force: Region I-crack speed and craze length increased. Region II-crack speed and duplex plastic zone length were constant, and Region Ill-crack speed decreased while the deformation zone length increased. The activation energies for the three regions were 100, 23, 20 kJ/mole, respectively. The proposed rate controlling processes of ESC for the LDPE/Igepal system are: Region 1 is controlled by a;-relaxation, and Region II and III are controlled by lamellar orientation. The Igepal plasticizes the amorphous phase and facilitates the stress induced orientation of the lamellar.

Notes: Abstract The J-integral was used to characterize initiation and rapid fracture under mixed mode loading conditions in carbon black filled natural rubber. The total critical J was geometry dependent, but the J analysis partitions the energy into that needed locally in the crack tip region and in the bulk. The critical conditions for pure mode II loading could not be determined because of buckling of the specimen; however, values obtained by extrapolation show J IIc to be about twice J Ic. Notes: Two-dimensional indenters (flat plate and cylinder) were used to compress rectangular and trapezoidal foam energy absorbers as a function of polymer, foam density, and thickness. An increased deformation volume formed when the indenter contact area was less than the foam absorber area, resulting in both increased energy absorption and stress transmitted to the indenter (i.e., “load spreading”). The deformation volume was trapezoidal, not prismatic, and was characterized by the indenter geometry, dimensions, and foam thickness. Conservative energy absorber design can be achieved by using “energy absorption diagrams” that account for the indenter (i.e., product) and absorber geometry and degree of load spreading.
