    Notes: A plasma discharge due to a sustaining pulse of an alternating current plasma display panel was analyzed using a two-dimensional particle-in-cell code, and basic characteristics of the plasma discharge were calculated. The characteristics of the plasma discharge due to a sustaining pulse are as follows. (i) A large amount of space charge remained after drawing the discharge current. This excess space charge did not contribute to wall charge formation or ultraviolet radiation. (ii) The electron energy distribution function was evaluated and could be well fitted by the Druyvesteyn distribution in the high-energy region. The Druyvesteyn distribution was a consequence of the cross section for electron-Ne elastic scattering. (iii) The calculated ultraviolet radiation efficiency η of the plasma discharge due to a sustaining pulse was between 5.51% and 30.7%. Examination of the sensitivity of the efficiency to the electron temperature showed that reducing the electron temperature was a key to improving the efficiency. (iv) A detailed understanding of the conditions for a stable plasma discharge, memory margin, firing voltage, and electrode voltage of the sustaining pulse were obtained from the voltage transfer curve. The voltage transfer curve could be used to optimize the discharge cell design. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A global model of a dielectric barrier discharge in Ne–Xe mixtures for an alternating current plasma display panel was developed. This model was used to evaluate electron temperature, plasma density, densities of excited state atoms, wall charge density, current density, excimer density, and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) intensity, and their gas composition-pressure dependencies, in order to analyze the mechanism of VUV radiation and discharge efficiency. The results show that the intensity ratio of 173 to 147 nm VUV is about a few percent. This means that the contribution of excimers is small in terms of VUV radiation. The maximum discharge efficiency was about 9% for Xe fraction in the range of 2%–12% and gas pressure in the range of 100–600 Torr. Discharge efficiency increases in the high Xe fraction and gas pressure region. The increase of the discharge efficiency is attributed to a decrease of discharge current and an increase of Xer*(3P1) excited state atom, due to the low electron temperature in the high Xe fraction and gas pressure region. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Absolutely calibrated measurements of the neutron yield are important for the evaluation of the plasma performance such as the fusion gain Q in D-D operating tokamaks. The time-resolved neutron yield is measured with 235U and 238U fission chambers and 3He proportional counters in the JT-60U tokamak. The in situ calibration was performed by moving the 252Cf neutron source toroidally through the JT-60 vacuum vessel. Detection efficiencies of three 235U and two 3He detectors were measured for 92 locations of the neutron point source in toroidal scans at two different major radii. The total detection efficiency for the torus neutron source was obtained by the averaging the point efficiencies over the whole toroidal angle. The uncertainty of the resulting detection efficiency for the plasma neutrons is estimated to be ±11%.

    Notes: In the alternating current plasma display panel, a widespread discharge can take place accidentally in a large number of cells in the upper or lower panel ends. The undesirable discharge is referred to as global breakdown. This is a serious problem, with consequences not only for display quality, but also for product reliability. The mechanism of the global breakdown was examined experimentally using a surface electrometer and theoretically using plasma simulation. From these examinations, the global breakdown mechanism was clarified as follows. Global breakdown was accompanied by charge separation in the horizontal direction of the panel. This charge separation was caused by electron transport downward in the panel during the address discharge. The electron transport formed a negative wall charge on the phosphor surface. When the wall voltage exceeded the insulation voltage of the protective layer, global breakdown occurred. Furthermore, it was clarified that increasing the front dielectric thickness or reducing the back dielectric thickness could suppress the electron transport during the address discharge. These optimizations of cell geometry could eliminate the global breakdown. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A fast reciprocating probe system with a long drive shaft was incorporated into a multi-junction lower hybrid (LH) wave launcher on JT-60U in order to investigate an improved coupling mechanism of the radio frequency wave to the core plasma. The system has been operated reliably over a horizontal scan of 25 cm in 1.5 s using a compact pneumatic cylinder drive and springs. A double probe measurement provided the scrape-off layer plasma profile between the last closed flux surface and the first wall with the spatial resolution of 1−2 mm measured with a laser displacement gauge. The profiles of the electron density ne and temperature Te were in good agreement with those obtained with a triple probe method. During the LH wave injection with good coupling to the core plasma, an increase in the local Te was observed in front of the LH launcher mouth. The local ne was (7−10)×1016 m−3, consistent values needed for the good coupling. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Principles and design details are described for a fully automatic system measuring frequency and temperature spectra of the complex elastic, dielectric, and piezoelectric constants of polymer films. A microcomputer is used to control all processes including wave generation, sampling, and calculations. A sinusoidal excitation wave is written onto a RAM, readout by an external clock, and applied to a sample via a D/A converter. The resulting signals related to force, deformation, charge, and voltage are simultaneously sampled using the same clock and are determined as complex quantities through Fourier transformation. Their ratios give corresponding complex response functions. A multifrequency signal consisting of eight sinusoidal waves with frequencies of common ratio 2 is used to obtain frequency spectra over two decades at a time. This system operates over a frequency range from 0.01 to 100 Hz for elastic and piezoelectric measurements and from 0.01 Hz to 10 kHz for dielectric measurements at temperatures from −160 to 250 °C with an accuracy of 0.1% in tan δ.

    Notes: The evaluation of the defects in fast neutron irradiated semi-insulating GaAs was studied using thermally stimulated current (TSC) and photoluminescence (PL) methods. A new TSC peak is observed at an annealing stage between 550 and 600 °C. This peak is associated with a GaAs-X complex defect, which might include X as the gallium vacancy, according to both the analysis of the activation energy and the annealing behavior of the PL emission. A prominent TSC peak is also observed in as-irradiated samples, showing the creation of an AsGa- VAs complex.

    Notes: To understand the dynamics of photoinduced volume expansion (PVE) in amorphous chalcogenides, in situ PVE (time evolution of thickness changes during illumination) measurements have been performed. Two distinct behaviors, transient and metastable PVE, have been observed. A strong correlation between the changes in thickness and photocurrent is reported. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
