    Notes: Different PHEMA/PCL semi-IPNs hydrogels and their relative composite systems reinforced with PET fibres have been investigated for potential use as intervertebral disc prostheses. Compression properties and water absorption were evaluated. Uniaxial compression tests on the swollen samples showed an increase of the modulus and maximum stress with increasing content of PCL and PET fibres. In particular, the composite PHEMA/PCL hydrogels showed compression properties similar to those expressed by the canine intervertebral discs in different spinal locations. The equilibrium water content of modified semi-IPNs decreased as function of the PCL and PET fibres. These tests indicate that the use of composite hydrogels as disc prostheses is very promising because it is possible to combine transport and mechanical properties which are crucial for the performance of the intervertebral disc.

    Notes: The nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour of Hydrothane®, a hydrophilic polyurethane used for biomedical applications, has been studied. The material has been tested in stress-relaxation experiments in a range of deformation up to 25%. Isochrone curves have been predicted by using the rubber elasticity theory and separating strain and time effect. Stress-strain curves obtained at different strain rates have been interpreted introducing strain rate dependent scaling factors.

    Notes: Abstract In this work, the effects of cold plasma treatment on the mechanical strength of polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) fibers has been verified. Single fibers were treated with oxygen and a mixture of oxygen and tetrafluoroethylene in a cold plasma reactor for 30, 100 and 200 s. The single fibers were then tested in tensile mode and the mechanical strength was analyzed by using the Weibull distribution function.

    Notes: Abstract The water sorption behaviour of several cross-linked gelatin-based systems were investigated and compared. The systems were gelatin, gelatin/ethyleneglycol, gelatin/polyoxypropylenediamine, and gelatin/polyethylene oxide. For all the systems, an increased water gain was obtained by raising the concentration of the second component, while the swelling was reduced by an increase of the cross-linking density.

    Notes: Abstract The thermomechanical properties of fibres of two hyaluronic acid esters have been evaluated. The materials are found to be significantly different in hydrophilicity, reflected also in variations in mechanical and viscoelastic properties. Both esters show a marked decrease in strength in the swollen state.

    Notes: This study deals with the viscoelastic evaluation of the efficacy of two ordinary knee osteoarthritis therapies: injections of exogenous high molecular weight hyaluronic acid and arthrocentesis. The results were also compared with “placebo” treatment. Synovial fluids were extracted from osteoarthritic knee joints of 60 patients before and after the different treatments and were analysed in a rheometer with coaxial cylinders arrangement at 37°C. Frequency sweep experiments provided the values of shear storage modulus G′ and shear loss modulus G″ as function of oscillation frequency. The quantified viscoelasticity gave information about the mechanical performance of synovial fluids and hence the long-term efficacy of osteoarthritis therapies. Moreover, the results were interpreted in terms of macromolecular structure and hyaluronic acid concentration and molecular weight in pathological synovial fluids.

    Notes: Blends of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) were prepared and characterized. The analysis of the glass transition temperature indicates no compatibility of the two polymers, which segregated into two distinct phases. The fracture strength of the blends can be explained on the basis of a constitutive model of spheres of PCL embedded in a PMMA matrix. The trend of water sorption confirms the hypothesis of phase segregation of PCL in the glassy matrix of PMMA.

    Notes: Blends of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)-poly(3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(L-lactides) (PLLA) have been prepared by solvent casting. Compatibility, thermal behavior, morphology, and mechanical properties of systems with various compositions were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical measurement, tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and wide-angle X ray (WAXS). Glass transition temperature of solvent cast materials, detected by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), showed partial molecular interactions between PHBV and PLLA. Crystallinity of the PLLA phase slightly decreased with increasing amount of PHBV, confirming the partial dispersion of PLLA in the PHBV phase. Mechanical properties were analyzed with theoretical models able to predict the behavior of heterogeneous systems. Phase separation was confirmed by SEM observations. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Despite the compelling need for artificial connective tissue replacements for orthopedic applications, to date, there is no material which can adequately reproduce the mechanical behavior of natural tissue with necessary long-term endurance. In this work, we introduce a novel soft composite material as a more suitable candidate for connective tissue replacement. The material proposed is based on a hydrogel-polymer matrix reinforced with poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers wound helically to mimic the architecture of the collagen fibers in natural tissue. Macroscopic behaviors such as static stress-strain, stress relaxation, and dynamic frequency responses can be modulated with choice of the components and design of the composite structure. In doing so, the mechanical characteristics of natural ligaments can be qualitatively reproduced and sustained over time. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Biomed Mater Res, 42, 6-12, 1998.
