    Description / Table of Contents: Body length , wet weight and maturity stage of krill (Euphausia superba) collected with RMT and bongo nets during the cruise of MS Nella Dan to Prydz Bay, Antarctica in January - February 1984 are reported. Non-krill zooplankton data from RMT samples (density and biomass), and euphausiid larvae (density) data from bongo samples are also presented.

    Description / Table of Contents: During the SIBEX II Cruise (December 1983 - February 1984) to the Prydz Bay region, Antarctica, fifty-one shallow hauls (0-200 m), nineteen deep hauls (0-1000 m) and four target trawls were made with a RMT 1+8 net. From the samples obtained abundance of larval and postlarval (juvenile and adult) krill Euphausia superba was investigated. For postlarval krill, size (length, weight), sex and maturity composition are reported.

    Notes: Abstract The euphausiid Nyctiphanes australis Sars is an important food item for a wide range of seabirds and commercially exploited fish in coastal waters of south-eastern Tasmania. During most of the year, N. australis forms the major component of the zooplankton biomass in Storm Bay, particularly during the summer months when it swarms in dense aggregations. Production was calculated using methods devised for individuals with continuous recruitment. Estimates of production, integrated for the whole of Storm Bay (approx 18.5km3) were from 78.3 to 84.8 mg m-3 yr1. The P:B ratio obtained for the period December 1979 to March 1981 was about 14. The production of exuviae was also calculated based on certain assumptions about moulting rate and dry weight of the moult, supported by some experimental data. The production of exuviae was 41.03 mgm-3yr-1 or 7.6 times the mean biomass. This gives a total production of flesh and exuviae of 2 212 tonnes dry weight per year for Storm Bay.

    Notes: Abstract This study was designed to assess the contribution of moulting and eggs to production of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes australis G. O. Sars. For this purpose, live specimens were collected from Storm Bay, south-eastern Tasmania, between August and December 1981, while preserved samples, collected between February 1980 and February 1981, were also examined. The intermoult period of N. australis increased exponentially with increase in body length and weight. Larvae moulted approximately every 2.5 to 3 d and adults every 4 to 5 d at 15°C. A decrease in temperature from 15° to 10°C resulted in the intermoult period almost doubling. The mean weight of exuviae produced represented nearly 6% of the body dry weight of the individual. Continuous maturation of ova was observed, with an individual female capable of releasing a total of ∼1 100 eggs in a lifetime. These are deposited as a series of batches into a pair of external ovisacs every 30 d. The size of the batch of eggs was dependent on the size of the female. Moulting of euphausiids forms a significant contribution of organic matter to detrital food webs. A value of 42.01 mg m-3 yr-1 was obtained for the production of exuviae. Egg production was calculated to be between 1.41 and 4.22 mg m-3 yr-1. Production and mean annual biomass of N. australis was previously calculated as 78.29 mg m-3 yr-1 and 5.39 mg m-3, respectively. Thus, the total production integrated for the whole of Storm Bay was 125 mg m-3 yr-1 or 2 309 tonnes dry wt yr-1, representing an overall P:B ratio of 23.1.

    Notes: Summary This paper presents results of net sampling carried out on four marine science cruises, between 1981 and 1985, in the Prydz Bay region of Antarctica by the Australian Antarctic Division. Krill exhibited a patchy distribution and overall low abundance. The majority of sampling sites in January 1985 returned no post-larval krill or densities of 〈1 individual 1000 m-3. The estimated mean abundance of E. superba in January 1985 was 6 individuals or 2 g (wet wt.) 1000 m-3 integrated for the upper 200 m of the water column which represented 3.4% of the total zooplankton biomass. No more than five years-groups, including the larvae, were observed in Prydz Bay, with mean lengths of groups 1+, 2+, 3+ and 4+ being 24, 38, 46 and 53 mm (standard 1), respectively in the middle of January. A high proportion of naupliar stages observed in January 1985 indicated that spawning in Prydz Bay begins in January and examination of adult maturation showed that the spawning continues at least to March.

    Notes: Abstract Freshly caught male and female Euphausia superba from the same swarm exhibited different rates of mortality subsequent to capture. Mortality was significantly higher for reproductive males (100%, n=68) than for females (3%, n=186) within the first 3 d of capture. Total lipid and triacylglycerol levels in male, female and juvenile Euphausia superba were analysed and compared. All reproductive male krill analysed from this swarm had low lipid levels (1 to 3% dry weight) with negligible triacylglycerol stores (0 to 2% of total lipid). Somatic lipid stores in female and juvenile krill ranged from 8 to 30% of which up to 40% was triacylglycerol. The levels of algal sterols in the digestive gland of males, females and juveniles indicate that all krill had been feeding recently. An analysis of the sex ratio of krill catches derived from data collected over seven summers from the Prydz Bay region showed a decrease in the proportion of males with increasing size. There was a sharp decline in numbers of male krill once they attained a length of 51 to 55 mm. Low lipid levels in redroductive male krill may be due to reproductive costs. The resulting low storage-lipid levels are accompanied by high mortality in male krill.

    Notes: Summary We have studied the single dose and steady-state pharmacokinetic of tiaprofenic acid in ten elderly arthritic patients living in the community (5 men and 5 women) taking 200 mg tid for 8 days. The mean area under the plasma concentration-time curves to 8 h (AUC (0–8)) did not alter significantly from day 1 to day 8 (77.25 to 79.61 µg·ml−1. h). The mean terminal phase half-life (t1/2) was 2.05 h and 2.25 h on Days 1 and 8 respectively in patients in whom the calculations were possible (7 patients on Day 1 and 6 patients on Day 8). The median observed time of maximum concentration (tmax) and the mean observed maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) of 100 min and 21.3 µg·ml−1 respectively on Day 1 were not significantly different from the values obtained on Day 8 (tmax 120 min; Cmax 20.7 µg·ml−1). The kinetic data suggest that there should be no significant accumulation of tiaprofenic acid in elderly ambulant people suffering from arthritis.

    Description: We describe a climate-driven range expansion of the red-tide dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans into the Southern Ocean (45°31'S 147°E). Sea surface height data showed that a warm-core eddy moving southwards from Tasmania was the potential vector for the transport of Noctiluca . We provide evidence for active feeding of Noctiluca on Southern Ocean phytoplankton. Possible competition with other grazers may have implications for food web dynamics were Noctiluca to become established in the Southern Ocean.
