Abstract An FAAS method for the determination of Cu, Zn, Ca, Mg and Fe using a microvolume injection technique is described. The injection volume for the determination of each element is 10 μl and the calibration graphs are linear over the ranges 0.05–1.5, 0.1–3.0, 0.1–2.0, 0.1–2.0 and 1.0–6.0 mg/l for Cu, Zn, Ca, Mg and Fe, respectively. The relative standard deviations are 2.6%, 2.8%, 3.0%, 1.3% and 2.5%, the rates of recovery 98%, 100%, 99%, 99% and 97%. The method was successfully applied to the determination of these elements in whole blood from healthy infant and mother (lying-in) ears.
