    Description: Understanding the formation of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei remains an elusive problem1. This is partly because observational tests of jet formation models suffer from the limited angular resolution of ground-based very-long-baseline interferometry that has thus far been able to probe the structure of the jet acceleration and collimation region in only two sources2,3. Here, we report observations of 3C84 (NGC 1275)—the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster—made with an interferometric array including the orbiting radio telescope of the RadioAstron4 mission. The data transversely resolve the edge-brightened jet in 3C84 only 30 μas from the core, which is ten times closer to the central engine than was possible in previous ground-based observations5 and allows us to measure the jet collimation profile from ~102 to ~104 gravitational radii (rg) from the black hole. The previously found5, almost cylindrical jet profile on scales larger than a few thousand rg is seen to continue at least down to a few hundred rg from the black hole, and we find a broad jet with a transverse radius of ≳250 rg at only 350 rg from the core. This implies that either the bright outer jet layer goes through a very rapid lateral expansion on scales ≲102 rg or it is launched from the accretion disk.

    Notes: An experiment was conducted over 3 years (1983-85) to assess the performance of Holcus lanatus German Commercial and cv. Massey Basyn compared with Lolium perenne cv. Perma on a gley soil under sheep grazing in the Scottish uplands. All grasses were sown together with Trifolium repens cv. Grasslands Huia. The swards were rotationally grazed at similar herbage allowances. During the first harvest year, the swards were grazed hard to a low mass (500 kg DM ha−1). In the second harvest year, post-grazing herbage masses of 500 and 1000 kg DM ha−1 were compared.Perma ryegrass had a higher level of herbage production than both H. lanatus cultivars in the first and second harvest years after sowing and hence had a greater number of sheep grazing days. The ryegrass sward consisted of 25% more green sown grass (85 cf. 60%) but 12% less white clover (4 cf. 16%) compared with both H. lanatus cultivars in the establishment and first harvest years. The persistence of all three grasses was poor although ryegrass had a higher presence (36%) than either Massey Basyn (22%) or German Commercial (13%) at the end of the. second harvest year.At a similar herbage allowance, there were no significant differences in the herbage intake and liveweight gain of sheep. Ryegrass had a higher organic matter digestibility and lower neutral and acid detergent fibre and lignin contents than either of the H. lanatus cultivars.In the second harvest year, although herbage production was greater at the higher herbage mass, there was no difference in the proportion of sown grass.It was concluded that ryegrass is a superior grass to H. lanatus on upland soils with high N status, moderate P status and a high pH.

    Notes: Five pasture treatments were applied to three semi-natural hill grassland communities. The pasture treatments were: (1) controlled grazing, (2) controlled grazing + lime, (3) controlled grazing + lime + phosphate, (4) controlled grazing + lime + phosphate + oversown white clover and (5) controlled grazing + lime + phosphate + oversown white clover + oversown perennial ryegrass. The communities were dominated by Agrostis/Festuca (site 1), Molinia (site 2) and Nardus (site 3). The Nardus at site 3 was substantially reduced by herbicide before treatments were applied. All treatments were grazed simultaneously by mature wether sheep on three occasions each year to a residual herbage mass of 560 kg DM ha−1. There were two grazing periods, each of 4 weeks duration, beginning in mid-May and mid-July respectively and a further grazing period of 3 weeks duration beginning in mid-October. The number of sheep grazing days and liveweight gain of sheep were recorded during each grazing period for 13 years at each site. Organic matter intake (OMI) and digestibility (OMD) of ingested herbage were measured in years 2, 5 and 13.Mean daily OMI per head ranged from 1290 g for treatment 1 to over 1400 g for treatments 4 and 5. OMI values were higher for the Agrostis/Festuca site (mean OMI 1450 g) than for the Molinia and Nardus sites (1310 g and 1370 g respectively) largely owing to differences in the values for treatments 1, 2 and 3. OMI values for each treatment decreased by around 300 g between May and October.Mean OMD values from treatments 1, 2 and 3 were higher for the Agrostis/Festuca site (0·66) than for the Molinia and Nardus sites (0·63 and 0·64 respectively). The OMD values for treatments 1, 2 and 3 at the Molinia and Nardus sites declined by between 0·05 and 0·02 between years 2 and 13 and also showed the greatest decrease between May and October (0·08). OMD values for treatments 4 and 5 (0·67 and 0·69 respectively) were higher than for treatments 1, 2 and 3 at all sites and levels were maintained over 13 years.Individual liveweight gains of sheep increased from treatment 1 (−18 g d−1) to treatment 5 (82 g d−1), but they decreased over time on all treatments.The Agrostis/Festuca site gave 17% more annual sheep grazing days than the Molinia site and 33% more than the Nardus site. The mean number of annual sheep grazing days for each treatment ranged from 2250 for treatment 1 to 3640 for treatment 5. Annual sheep grazing days increased over 13 years by between 35 and 45% for treatment 1 and 55 and 70% for treatment 5.The results are described in relation to the changes in pasture composition and herbage accumulation.

    Notes: Groups of calves and lambs grazed on plots of S23 perennial ryegrass, in successive periods of 2, 2 and 3 weeks, at stocking rates which resulted in a slow change in herbage mass on each plot and measurements were made of ingestive behaviour (biting rate, bite size and grazing time) and herbage intake.As the green herbage mass was progressively reduced from approx. 3000 to 1000 kg OM per ha between periods, biting rate and grazing time increased, but insufficiently to offset the rapid fall in bite size so that herbage intake declined by 24% and 39% for calves and lambs respectively. Patterns of response were similar in calves and lambs, though in all parameters except biting rate the lambs appeared to be more sensitive than the calves to changes in sward conditions and there was no evidence that lambs were better adapted to grazing on short swards than calves.Intake increased in both calves and lambs up to levels of 2500–3000 kg green OM per ha, though this response may have been attributable in part to the reinforcing effects of increasing herbage mass and diet digestibility. Lambs consistently selected a more digestible diet than calves.Both calves and lambs increased grazing time substantially in response to limiting sward conditions, in contrast to results in earlier strip-grazing trials with calves, thus supporting the suggestion that the lack of response under strip-grazing is a characteristic of the management imposed.

    Notes: Bite depth was measured in four experiments in which grazing cows were offered, individually, patches of perennial ryegrass swards, typically 0·9 m × 0·9 m, of contrasting structural composition within linear sequences of eighteen to twenty-seven patches. Bite depths were analysed in relation to the independent effects of pseudo-stem height, re-growth depth, stubble height and sward height. In vegetative swards comprising predominantly leaf, with re-growth and stubble strata of vegetative origin, bite depth was strongly related to sward height. However, when the leaf–stem contrast between strata increased, bite depth was strongly correlated with the depth of re-growth. Cows were observed to penetrate into a mature stubble stratum with increasing sward height, indicating that stubble height is only a partial regulator of bite depth. In an experiment designed to investigate the independent effects of pseudo-stem and sward height, pseudo-stem was only a partial regulator of bite depth. Evidence to support the concept that bite depth is a fixed proportion of sward height across swards of different structure was inconsistent, but there was evidence of a maximum bite depth of 0·70 of sward height. There were also indications that bite depth was conditioned by the number of bites removed. This suggested that cows initially took a cautious approach to grazing, building up bite depth with feedback over the first 20–30 bites in a new patch. Behaviour at the current patch was not affected by the characteristics of the preceding or succeeding patch in sequence.

    Notes: The results are reported of an examination of detailed measurements on the ingestive behaviour of calves and lambs in response to variations in the surface characteristics of swards under strip-grazing and continuous stocking managements. It is shown that intake per bite and the short-term rate of herbage intake were both sensitive to the height of the surface horizon above ground level but, at least under strip-grazing management, not to variations in herbage density in the grazed horizon. The rate of biting was less sensitive to variations in sward conditions, particularly under strip-grazing.Both intake per bite and rate of intake were more sensitive to variations in grazing height under strip-grazing, where sward changes were rapid, than under continuous stocking, where they were slow. Under continuous stocking, ingestive behaviour was more sensitive to changes in sward conditions in lambs than in calves.

    Notes: Two experiments are described in which groups of lactating cows, non-lactating cattle and weaned calves grazed a sequence of swards varying in maturity and herbage mass under strip grazing management at a daily herbage allowance of 60 g dry matter per kg live weight. Lactating cows ate 43% and 76% more herbage than non-lactating cattle of similar weight in the two experiments but herbage OM intakes per unit live weight by the calves and lactating cows were similar.Variations in diet digestibility and herbage intake in the lactating and non-lactating cattle with changes in sward conditions were similar. In the first experiment the calves were experienced grazers; the variation in the digestibility of the herbage selected was less in the calves than the adult cattle, but the variation in herbage intake was greater. The calves in the second experiment were younger, and they were inexperienced grazers; their ability to increase herbage intake in response to changing sward conditions was poorer than that of adult cattle, though variations in diet digestibility were similar in all classes.The practical implications of these results are discussed briefly.

    Notes: Twenty-four British Friesian cows were allocated between six grazing treatments (two levels of herbage mass x three levels of daily herbage allowance) in a balanced change-over design with four periods of 12 d each at monthly intervals. Herbage OM mass ranged from 3790 to 5770 kg ha-1 measured to ground level and daily herbage DM allowances were 30, 60 and 90 g per kg animal live weight. Herbage OM intake was lower at high than at low herbage mass (24·6 vs 26·3 g per kg LW), and was 26·9, 26·6 and 22·9 g per kg LW respectively at daily herbage DM allowances of 90, 60 and 30 g per kg LW. Milk yield was not affected by herbage mass but was depressed at the low herbage allowance.

    Notes: Three groups of Hereford × Friesian steer calves, bom in early January 1969, were strip-grazed on eqoal areas of a sward of S321 perennial ryegrass from May to September inclusive, and received kibbled barley at the rate of nil, 3/4% or 1 1/2% of liveweight per day. Adjustments were made to the number of animals per group in order to maintain the same high grazing intensity (defined as 8 cm stubble height in grazed areas) on all treatments. The animals receiving supplementary barley gained weight at a rate 17–19% higher than the controls, but there was no significant difference in growth rate between the high and low levels of supplementation. The effficiency of conversion of barley was only 5–12 kg per animal liveweight gain/100 kg barley OM.The high level of supplementation resulted in an increase in stocking rate of 36 % over that of the control group, and an increase in liveweight gain per unit area of land grazed of 63%. The additional liveweight gain due to supplements, expressed per unit area of land grazed, was relatively constant at 21–24 kg liveweight gain/ 100 kg barley OM consumed.
