Notes: Summary The sonic velocity of preoriented PET fibres as a function of temperature was measured in dependence on the degree of orientation, stress applied to the fibres, and heating rate. The results reflect the structural and orientation changes which take place in the range of and above the glass transition temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstracts Polyethyleneterephthalate-(PET-) films were degraded by aminolysis for several different times. The samples produced in this manner differ significantly in (average) molecular weight, crystallization und melting behaviour, and morphology. The density of primary nuclei decreases with the reduction of molecular weight as it has been shown by Ueberreiter in a previous work on polyethylenesuccinate.

Notes: Abstract PVC- and PC-films doped with various fluorescent molecules were uniaxially drawn below and just above the glass transition temperature. The orientation of fluorescent probes and polymer segments is discussed, comparing Hermans' orientation factors evaluated from birefringence for the segments and from dichroism and fluorescence polarization for the probes. Moreover, the orientation of the fluorescent probes is related to that of hypothetical units, orientated according to the pseudoaffine deformation mechanism.

Notes: Abstract Highly oriented semicrystalline PET films are exposed to uniaxial statical load both parallel and perpendicular to the preferential orientation direction at various temperatures. The loading of the specimens parallel to the preferential orientation direction leads to an increase in orientation of the chain segments within the amorphous interlayers and to a decrease of density of the amorphous regions which in combination with a rise of the microvoid volume ratio effects a significant increase of the mean square density fluctuation. Thereby chain segements may emerge from the crystalline regions and may pass into the amorphous interlayers.

Notes: Abstract Atactic polystyrene (PS) is doped in solution with various fluorescent molecules and cast to films. Rectangular samples, cut from these films, are uniaxially drawn at 100 °C and 110 °C. The orientation of the fluorescent probes is characterized by UV-dichroism and fluorescence polarization, that of the polymer segments by IR-dichroism and birefringence. It is observed that the fluorescent molecules depending on their structure tend to orientate more or less perpendicular to the drawing direction. This can be understood by assuming that the benzene rings of the fluorescent probes try to associate to those of the polymer. As consistent values of the angle between the 2850 cm−1 transition moment and the chain axis and of the intrinsic birefringence result 70° and −0.10 respectively.

Notes: Abstract  ζ-potential measurements using the streaming potential method were performed on several differently modified jute fibers. The time dependence of the ζ-potential measured in 1 × 10−3 M KCl solution offers the possibility to characterize the water-uptake behavior and the velocity constant of this process for almost all the jute fibers investigated. All the jute fibers contain, as expected, dissociable acidic surface functional groups as could be verified by measuring the pH dependence of the ζ-potential. Remarkably a peak (increase in the negative ζ-potential values) was detected while measuring the ζ–pH dependency. The origin of this peak is still questionable; however, it could be observed that this peak is a function of the degree of surface coverage of additional components, such as fats, waxes or grafted polymers, i.e. the accessibility of ether functions in the jute fiber surface.

Notes: Abstract Liquid crystalline polymers (LCP) often show after a shearing procedure a so-called banded texture as reported in the literature. The appearance of the banded texture is mainly influenced by the chemical structure of the LCP, the shear rate and the thickness of the layer. In addition to the well known banded texture a particular tractor texture (or herring-bone texture) can be obtained. By subsequent annealing of the sheared specimens at elevated temperatures the banded texture can be changed, especially in dependence on the thickness of the sheared layer. In some cases the banded texture remains unchanged, whereas in other cases it is transformed into a domain structure or into spherulites.
