    Description: Four different arraying schemes applicable to deep space communications are discussed and analyzed. These include symbol stream combining (SSC), baseband combining (BC), carrier arraying (CA) and full spectrum combining (FSC). Complexity versus performance is traded off throughout the paper and benefits to the reception of existing spacecraft signals are discussed.

    Description: The performance of a QPSK (quadrature phase-shift keying) lock detector is described, taking into account the degradation due to carrier phase jitter. Such an analysis is necessary for accurate performance prediction purposes in scenarios where both the loop SNR is low and the estimation period is short. The derived formulas are applicable to several QPSK loops and are verified using computer simulations.

    Description: The frequency and phase acquisition performance of three quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) carrier tracking loops, the MAP estimation loop, the Costas crossover loop, and the generalized Costas loop, is described. Acquisition time and probability of acquisition as a function of both loop signal-to-noise ratio and frequency offset to loop bandwidth ratio are obtained via computer simulations for type II and III loops. It is shown that the MAP loop, which results in the smallest squaring loss for all signal-to-noise ratios, is sometimes outperformed by the other two loops in terms of acquisition time and acquisition probability.

    Description: Three techniques that use carrier information from multiple antennas to enhance carrier acquisition and tracking are presented. These techniques in combination with baseband combining are analyzed and simulated for residual and suppressed-carrier modulation. It is shown that the carrier arraying using a single carrier loop technique can acquire and track the carrier even when any single antenna in the array cannot do so by itself. The carrier aiding and carrier arraying using multiple carrier loop techniques, on the other hand, are shown to lock on the carrier only when one of the array elements has sufficient margin to acquire the carrier on its own.

    Description: Telemetry tests with the Advanced Receiver II (ARX II) in Compatibility Test Area 21 are described. The ARX II was operated in parallel with a Block-III Receiver/baseband processor assembly combination (BLK-III/BPA) and a Block III Receiver/subcarrier demodulation assembly/symbol synchronization assembly combination (BLK-III/SDA/SSA). The telemetry simulator assembly provided the test signal for all three configurations, and the symbol signal to noise ratio as well as the symbol error rates were measured and compared. Furthermore, bit error rates were also measured by the system performance test computer for all three systems. Results indicate that the ARX-II telemetry performance is comparable and sometimes superior to the BLK-III/BPA and BLK-III/SDA/SSA combinations.

    Description: Four different arraying schemes that can be used by the Deep Space Network are functionally discussed and compared. These include symbol stream combining (SSC), baseband combining (BC), carrier arraying (CA), and full spectrum combining (FSC). In addition, sibeband aiding (SA) is also included and compared even though it is not an arraying scheme, since it uses a single antenna. Moreover, combinations of these schemes are discussed, such as carrier arraying with sideband aiding and baseband combining (CA/SA/BC) or carrier arraying with symbol stream combining (CA/SSC). Complexity versus performance is traded off and the benefits to the reception of existing spacecraft signals are discussed. Recommendations are made as to the best techniques for particular configurations.

    Description: The breadboard Advanced Receiver 2 (ARX 2) that is currently being built for future use in NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) is described. The hybrid analog/digital receiver performs multiple functions including carrier, subcarrier, and symbol synchronization. Tracking can be achieved for residual, suppressed, or hybrid carriers and for both sinusoidal and square-wave subcarriers. Other functions such as time-tagged Doppler extraction and monitor/control are also discussed, including acquisition algorithms and lock-detection schemes. System requirements are specified and a functional description of the ARX 2 is presented. The various digital signal-processing algorithms used are also discussed and illustrated with block diagrams.

    Description: The feasibility of using a low gain antenna (LGA) as a mobile terminal antenna for a helicopter is described in this paper. The objectives are to select the lowest cost antenna system which can be easily mounted on a helicopter and capable of communicating with a satellite, and to determine the best antenna position on the helicopter to mitigate the signal blockage due to rotor blades and the multipath effect from the helicopter's body. The omnidirectional LGA is selected because it is simple, reliable, and low cost. The helix antenna is selected among the many LGA's because it is the most economical one and has the widest elevation beamwidth. Both 2-arm and 4-arm helices are studied experimentally to determine the antenna's performance and the scattering effects from the helicopter's body. It is found that the LGA should be located near the tail section and at least eight inches above the helicopter.

    Description: An Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) loop based on an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is introduced and analyzed in detail. The scheme involves an EKF which operates on a modified set of data in order to track the frequency of the incoming signal. The algorithm can also be viewed as a modification to the well known cross-product AFC loop. A low carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), high-dynamic environment is used to test the algorithm and the probability of loss-of-lock is assessed via computer simulations. The scheme is best suited for scenarios in which the frequency error variance can be compromised to achieve a very low operating CNR threshold. This technique can easily be incorporated in the Advanced Receiver (ARX), requiring minimum software modifications.

    Description: A digital Doppler extraction demonstration with the Advanced Receiver 2 (ARX 2) tracking Pioneer 10 and Voyager 2 is described. The measured results are compared with those of the Block 4 receiver that was operating in parallel with the ARX 2. It is shown that the ARX 2 outperforms the Block 4 receiver in terms of Allan variance of the Doppler residuals, the amount of which depends on the scenario of interest.
