    Description: Xenopus laevis (African clawed frog) has two types of proto-type galectins that are similar to mammalian galectin-1 in amino acid sequence. One type, comprising xgalectin-Ia and -Ib, is regarded as being equivalent to galectin-1, and the other type, comprising xgalectin-Va and -Vb, is expected to be a unique galectin subgroup. The latter is considerably abundant in frog skin; however, its biological function remains unclear. We determined the crystal structures of two proto-type galectins, xgalectin-Ib and -Va. The structures showed that both galectins formed a mammalian galectin-1-like homodimer, and furthermore, xgalectin-Va formed a homotetramer. This tetramer structure has not been reported for other galectins. Gel filtration and other experiments indicated that xgalectin-Va was in a dimer–tetramer equilibrium in solution, and lactose binding enhanced the tetramer formation. The residues involved in the dimer–dimer association were conserved in xgalectin-Va and -Vb, and one of the Xenopus (Silurana) tropicalis proto-type galectins, but not in xgalectin-Ia and -Ib, and other galectin-1-equivalent proteins. Xgalectin-Va preferred Galβ1-3GalNAc and not Galβ1-4GlcNAc, while xgalectin-Ib preferred Galβ1-4GlcNAc as well as human galectin-1. Xgalectin-Va/Vb would have diverged from the galectin-1 group with accompanying acquisition of the higher oligomer formation and altered ligand selectivity.

    Description: Existing phenol production processes tend to be energy-consuming and produce unwanted by-products. We report an efficient process using a shell-and-tube reactor, in which a gaseous mixture of benzene and oxygen is fed into a porous alumina tube coated with a palladium thin layer and hydrogen is fed into the shell. Hydrogen dissociated on the palladium layer surface permeates onto the back and reacts with oxygen to give active oxygen species, which attack benzene to produce phenol.     Description: Throughout life, new neurons are continuously added to the dentate gyrus. As this continuous addition remodels hippocampal circuits, computational models predict that neurogenesis leads to degradation or forgetting of established memories. Consistent with this, increasing neurogenesis after the formation of a memory was sufficient to induce forgetting in adult mice. By contrast, during infancy, when hippocampal neurogenesis levels are high and freshly generated memories tend to be rapidly forgotten (infantile amnesia), decreasing neurogenesis after memory formation mitigated forgetting. In precocial species, including guinea pigs and degus, most granule cells are generated prenatally. Consistent with reduced levels of postnatal hippocampal neurogenesis, infant guinea pigs and degus did not exhibit forgetting.     Description: Summary:Air clathrates in polar ice sheets exist in different shapes and sizes. For the description of transition states from air bubbles to clathrates and between different stages of transformation, and for statistical purposes, a classification into different categories is necessary. We have tried to establish a framework for the classification of clathrates employing criteria such as transparency, to distinguish between different stages of crystallisation, size, to reconstruct segregation processes, and shape, to investigate the crystal properties and the processes of recrystallisation. A miscellaneous category accounts for mixed-type clathrates, which are the result of different factors leading to their formation.Zusammenfassung:Luftclathrate in polaren Eisschilden weisen verschiedene Formen und Größen auf. Für die Beschreibung von Übergangszuständen von Luftblasen zu Clathraten und zwischen verschiedenen Transformationsphasen sowie für statistische Auswertungen ist eine Klassifizierung in verschiedene Kategorien notwendig. Ausgehend von Unterscheidungskriterien wie Transparenz, um zwischen verschiedenen Kristallisationsphasen zu unterscheiden, Größe, um Teilungsprozesse nachzuvollziehen, und Formen, um die Kristalleigenschaften und Umkristallisierungsprozesse zu untersuchen, haben wir ein Kriterienschema zur Klassifizierung von Clathraten aufgestellt. Eine weitere Kategorie beschreibt Clathrate, die verschiedenartige Merkmale auf Grund von verschiedenen Faktoren, die zu ihrer Entwicklung geführt haben, aufweisen.

    Description: Abstract.Field studies of air bubble and clathrate inclusions in the NGRIP ice core reveal two stages of clathrate formation. In the transition zone translucent primary clathrates with rough surfaces and irregular shapes, formed from individual bubbles, split up and form smaller specimens. Deeper down in the transition zone (~1100 m), clathrate metamorphosis sets in, giving rise to the formation of transparent secondary clathrates, with smooth and regular, often poly-hedral or faceted shapes. Rod-like crystals of great length (~2 mm) often show signs of separation into smaller units that fragment into smaller specimens. These findings imply that the simplified picture of one bubble forming one clathrate has to be modified.

    Description: We performed microscopic observations and a statistical study of the number, size and shape distribution of clathrates in the GRIP (Greenland Ice Core Project) deep ice core, using 185 samples from a depth range of 1016-3014m, spanning a period of 6 to 〉110 ka sp and encompassing the Holocene, Wisconsin and Eemian periods. The number concentration of the clathrates varied considerably with climatic changes. It was possible to detect the rapid climatic oscillations in the last glacial between 13 and 110 ka BP, the Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles, in the number-concentration profile of clathrates. The mean volume of clathrates is less clearly influenced by climatic factors, with a tendency towards greater volumes in warmer periods, but also a growth of clathrates with depth could be detected. This growth rate was calculated to be 3.1 x 10(-12) cm(3) a(-1). The amount of gases captured in the clathrates is estimated to be significantly smaller than the total amount of air determined by gas-concentration measurements. This points to diffusion processes of atmospheric gases within the ice matrix.
