    Notes: Abstract Concentrations for 38 elements are routinely measured in the marine mammal liver tissues archived in the National Biomonitoring Specimen Bank (NBSB). Results show that hepatic concentrations of vanadium, selenium, silver, cadmium, and mercury are positively correlated with age for beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) and of vanadium, selenium, cadmium, and mercury with length for ringed seals (Phoca hispada). Many researchers have reported linear correlations of hepatic selenium, cadmium, and mercury with marine mammal age; however, there is only one other report of a linear correlation of hepatic vanadium with marine mammal age. Vanadium levels are at or below detection limits (⩽0.01 μg/g) in liver tissues of U.S. east coast marine mammals from the NBSB but are present at levels ranging from 0.02 to 1.2 μg/g of wet weight in the tissues of Alaskan marine mammals. Although only three bearded seal (Eriganthus barbatus) and three bow-head whale (Balaena mysticetus) liver samples have been analyzed, hepatic vanadium levels also increased with animal size for these species. The presence of relatively high levels of vanadium in the livers of these Alaskan animals may reflect a unique dietary source of vanadium, a unique geochemical source of vanadium, or anthropogenic input to the Alaskan marine environment.

    Notes: Abstract The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has recently introduced several reference materials for organic and inorganic nutrients in food matrices to assist the food industry in complying with nutrition labeling laws; the food industry and other government agencies have collaborated with NIST in this endeavor. Two food-matrix SRMs were issued in 1996: SRM 1544, Fatty Acids and Cholesterol in Frozen Food Composite; and SRM 1846, Infant Formula. Concentration values in SRM 1544 are provided for six fatty acids, cholesterol, and proximates (fat, protein, carbohydrate, etc.). Values are assigned for proximate and caloric content as well as the concentrations of sixteen vitamins and nine minerals and trace elements in SRM 1846. In 1997, NIST expects to issue two additional food-matrix SRMs: SRM 1548a, Typical Diet, and SRM 2383, Baby Food Composite. SRM 1548a will replace SRM 1548, Total Diet, and will have values assigned for proximates, major and minor inorganic nutrients, and toxic trace elements. SRM 2383 will have values assigned for proximates, vitamins, carotenoids, and inorganic nutrients.

    Notes: Abstract A comprehensive approach to the analysis of human livers was developed in a pilot program for the National Environmental Specimen Bank that employed a combination of four analytical techniques. Refinements in this approach were needed for improvement in detection limits, more effective sample usage and to reduce the number of analytical steps that were involved. Since neutron activation analysis (NAA) had determined most of the elements, expansion of NAA was chosen to achieve these goals. Modifications in the instrumental NAA procedures, including the use of a Compton Suppressor System, gave increased sensitivity for some low level elements, such as arsenic and chromium. Radiochemical procedures that followed the instrumental counts increased the sensitivity for the elements chromium, selenium, arsenic, molybdenum, silver, antimony, and tin. Results are given for two radiochemical procedures that were applied following the modified procedure, either the use of an inorganic ion exchange column or a liquid/liquid extraction, and these are compared to instrumental results.

    Notes: Abstract Neutron activation analysis is one of many analytical techniques used at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the certification of NIST Standard Reference Materials (SRMs). NAA competes favorably with all other techniques because of it's unique capabilities for high accuracy even at very low concentrations for many elements. In this paper, instrumental and radiochemical NAA results are described for 25 elements in two new NIST SRMs, SRM 1515 (Apple Leaves) and SRM 1547 (Peach Leaves), and are compared to the certified values for 19 elements in these two new botanical reference materials.

    Notes: Abstract Analyses for certification have been made for the determination of 30 elements in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Tomato Leaves renewal reference material, SRM 1573a. Three of the analytical techniques used were instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA), and prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA). These techniques provided data on 19 elements by INAA, 10 elements by PGAA, and 7 elements by RNAA, with some overlap between techniques. For example, INAA was able to obtain overall analytical uncerainties (at the 95% confidence level) averaging ±2.2% for major and minor constituents (Ca, Mg, K), ±3.3% for constituents from 1 to 1000 μg/g (Na, Fe, Al, Mn, Ba, Zn, Rb, La, Cr), and ±6.4% for elements between 10 and 1000 ng/g (Co, V, Se, Th, Sc, Sb), using sample dry weights of approximately 150 mg. These analyses represent the most extensive use to date of nuclear analytical techniques in the certification of a trace element SRM at NIST.

    Notes: Abstract At the National Institute of Standards and Technology, there are two techniques for chemical analysis that use neutron beams from the reactor for target irradiation: neutron depth profiling (NDP) and prompt γ-ray activation analysis (PGAA). There are two facilities for each technique, one equipped with a thermal neutron beam and the other, with a cold neutron beam. In addition, focused beams of cold neutrons will be used to measure the two-dimensional element distributions by PGAA and three-dimensional distributions by NDP. This paper includes a brief description of the facilities, the measurement capabilities of each, some recent applications of NDP and PGAA, and neutron focusing as applied to these techniques.

    Notes: Abstract Apparatus is being developed for short irradiation and rapid counting at the NIST Reactor, optimized for accurate neutron activation analysis via activation products ranging in half-life from about 500 ms to 500 s. This facility is designed to irradiate a sample either in a well-thermalized neutron flux at 3·1013 n·cm−2·s−1, or in a higher flux with a larger fast and epithermal component. The design transfer time for a 1-ml rabbit is 500 ms, measured to 10 ms precision. Timing information for both irradiation and counting will be transferred automatically to the activation analysis workstation computer. The γ-ray spectrometer system is selected and tuned for accurate measurement at high and varying counting rates, using loss-free counting (LFC) technology. A detailed calibration and characterization of this system has been performed. Accurate measurement requires that attention be paid to the systematic and random errors to which LFC is subject, but this requirement is minor compared to the advantages of undistorted spectral shape, the ability to solve the decay equations exactly, and the wider useful range of counting rates in the spectrometer system.
