Notes: Grass and clover production and nitrogen cycling were compared in 1983 and 1984 at three sites: an upland peaty gley and upland and lowland brown earths. The clover varieties Olwen and S184 were compared in 1983 and S100 and S184 in 1984. Ammonium and nitrate sources of 15N were used to measure nitrogen recovery from fertilizer and soil, nitrogen fixation and nitrogen transfer from clover to grass. Acetylene reduction was measured once, in 1983, but isotope dilution was used in both years.Olwen clover produced more dry matter and took up more 15N than S184. Olwen fixed more nitrogen than S184 over the whole season, as measured by 15N isotope dilution. Companion grass took up more soil nitrogen when growing with S184 than with Olwen. The clover variety S100, tested at the lowland site in 1984, caused no significant variations in dry matter accumulation or N fixation. In the dry 1984 season, grass dry matter accumulation and 15N uptake were less than in 1983, and plants actually lost total nitrogen from their roots to the soil. Fixation rate varied more in 1984 than in 1983. Nitrogen transfer from clover to grass was detected by isotope ratio differences in 1983, and by total N differences in 1984.Site differences were dominated by the greater dry matter accumulation of Olwen in the lowland in 1983, but in that year there was also increased dry matter accumulation and increased 15N fertilizer uptake, but less nitrogen fixed on the mineral upland site than on the peat soil.Whether 15N was given as ammonium or nitrate made little difference in these experiments.

Notes: We analyze magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements of the electron doped triple layered perovskite, or Ruddlesden–Popper class of manganates Ca4−xLaxMn3O10. Near the undoped region a paramagnetic insulator to antiferromagnetic insulator transition is observed with decreasing temperature and a concomitant change in the conduction process from thermal activation to Mott-type hopping. For larger doping, with a Mn valence of 3.97, there is a transition from the paramagnetic insulator to a canted antiferromagnetic insulator which exhibits a more dramatic change in the conduction mechanism. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method is described for enantiomorphic space-group determination which depends upon a simple analysis of a single convergent-beam diffraction pattern. The method, which in principle may be applied to any enantiomorph, is here used to identify the space group of dextrorotatory α-quartz. In this, a four-beam pattern is analysed by visual matching to an analogue computer display.

Notes: The MoO3 structure is analysed by means of multi-slice calculations for crystals up to 80 Å thick. It is shown that for such thin crystals convergent-beam patterns can be simply analysed. This allows crystal thickness to be readily determined and opens up the way to more precise structure factor measurements. Many-beam calculations are also used to analyse unit-cell and symmetry data obtained by convergent-beam diffraction/microscopy observations of '101' domains in molybdenum trioxide, showing that [MoO6] octahedra in domains are more nearly regular than in MoO3. This is supported by analysis of thermal diffuse scattering. The '101' domain structure has space group Cmcm and unit-cell parameters identical to those of the molybdenum oxide-hydroxide Mo4O10(OH)2. A qualitative comparison of calculated and observed intensities for the space-group-forbidden 100 reflexions of MoO3 indicates the presence of epitaxically deposited surface layers. This observation, together with the evidence of a hydroxylated domain structure, suggests that thin crystals are formed with epitaxic hydroxyl layers which diffuse into the bulk structure when the crystals are heated.

Notes: An examination of graphite has been carried out by convergent-beam electron diffraction for the purpose of examining the symmetry of the structure, and of measuring the structure factors for the 100 and the 110 reflexions. Symmetry changes within the sample were related to the fault structure, which was imaged in the defocused convergent beam. The value determined for V100 deviates by approximately 9% from the value determined using Dirac-Slater scattering curves for a spherical atom. A difference Fourier map calculated from the experimental values and computed spherical atom values shows the trigonal regions of bonding potential, but lacks resolution, indicating a need to refine other reflexions in the zone.

Notes: A simple procedure is presented for the identification of enantiomorphous space groups by electron diffraction. This is based on the ability to determine the sense of an asymmetry in a projection, which is a property of N-beam dynamic diffraction. The steps in this procedure follow those of the X-ray procedure which depends upon anomalous dispersion instead of dynamic scattering. To illustrate and test the electron-diffraction procedure, a space-group determination was carried out on a sample of dextrorotatory α-quartz: space group P3221 was found, in agreement with the findings of de Vries [Nature, Lond. (1958), 181, 1193].
