Description: Seasonal changes in the diel feeding patterns of the zooplanktivorous icefish (Neosalanx taihuensis), which is an endemic species of China, were studied in the large, shallow eutrophic Lake Chaohu of China during the autumn of 2002 and summer of 2003. The results of the diel feeding rhythm indicate that icefish is a visual particulate feeder. There were large differences in diet composition and the selection indices of certain prey by icefish. In general, icefish fed more on calanoids than on cyclopoids, and fed more on larger cladocerans (i.e., Daphnia, Moina, Leptodora) than smaller cladocerans (i.e., Bosmina, Ceriodaphnia). Icefish is highly selective of individual food items, with prey selection also being dependent on fish size. There was no significant difference in the prey selection between male and female icefish. This study provides the first report of diel feeding rhythm in icefish, and is the first comparative study on prey selection between male and female icefish.

Description: Thorium-234 is increasingly used as a tracer of ocean particle flux, primarily as a means to estimate particulate organic carbon export from the surface ocean. This requires determination of both the 234Th activity distribution (in order to calculate 234Th fluxes) and an estimate of the C/234Th ratio on sinking particles, to empirically derive C fluxes. In reviewing C/234Th variability, results obtained using a single sampling method show the most predictable behavior. For example, in most studies that employ in situ pumps to collect size fractionated particles, C/234Th either increases or is relatively invariant with increasing particle size (size classes 〉1 to 100’s μm). Observations also suggest that C/234Th decreases with depth and can vary significantly between regions (highest in blooms of large diatoms and highly productive coastal settings). Comparisons of C fluxes derived from 234Th show good agreement with independent estimates of C flux, including mass balances of C and nutrients over appropriate space and time scales (within factors of 2-3). We recommend sampling for C/234Th from a standard depth of 100 m, or at least one depth below the mixed layer using either large volume size fractionated filtration to capture the rarer large particles, or a sediment trap or other device to collect sinking particles. We also recommend collection of multiple 234Th profiles and C/234Th samples during the course of longer observation periods to better sample temporal variations in both 234Th flux and the characteristic of sinking particles. We are encouraged by new technologies which are optimized to more reliably sample truly settling particles, and expect the utility of this tracer to increase, not just for upper ocean C fluxes but for other elements and processes deeper in the water column.

Description: Since the 1960’s, thorium isotopes occupy a special place in the oceanographer’s toolbox as tracers for determining rates and mechanisms of oceanic scavenging, particle dynamics, and carbon fluxes. Due to their unique and constant production rates from soluble parent nuclides of uranium and radium, their disequilibrium can be used to calculate rates and time scales of sinking particles. In addition, by ratio-ing particulate 234Th (as well, in principle, other Thnuclides) to carbon (and other elements), and linking this ratio to the parent-daughter disequilibrium in the water column, it is possible to calculate fluxes of carbon and other elements. Most of these applications are possible with little knowledge of the dissolved chemical properties of thorium, other than its oxidation state (IV) and tendency to strongly sorb to surfaces, i.e., its “particle- or surface-activity”. However, the use of any tracer is hindered by a lack of knowledge of its chemical properties. Recent observations in the variability of carbon to 234Th ratios in different particle types, as well as of associations of Th(IV) with various marine organic biomolecules has led to the need for a review of current knowledge and what future endeavors should be taken to understand the marine chemistry of thorium.

Notes: High-quality λ-MnO2 single-crystal films were fabricated on MgO (001) substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The structural characteristics and magnetic properties of the films were studied. Two magnetic transition temperatures, T1 and T2, were observed from the films. Their magnetic behavior differed from that of bulk polycrystalline samples synthesized by removing Li ions from the parent LiMn2O4. The first, T1, setting at around 20 K, corresponded to long-range antiferromagnetic ordering similar to that observed in bulk at 32 K. T2, set at 43 K, corresponded to weak long-range ferromagnetic ordering among net magnetization of clusters, in which short-range antiferromagnetic ordering existed. T1 shifted to lower temperature with decreasing film thickness, which indicated that the proximity of the interface and strain played a key role in determining the transition temperature. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method using a low-temperature Si (LT-Si) buffer layer is developed to grow a SiGe epilayer with low density of dislocations on a Si substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy. In this method, a LT-Si layer is used to release the stress of the SiGe layer. The samples have been investigated by x-ray double-crystal diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that the LT-Si is effective to release the stress and suppress threading dislocations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Diamondlike carbon (DLC) films were directly deposited onto germanium (Ge) and zinc sulphide (ZnS) slices by a capacitively coupled 13.56 MHz rf glow discharge plasma with Ar-C2H2 gas mixtures. The IR transmittance was measured using a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer. The maximum values of the IR transmission of Ge and ZnS with DLC films on both sides are 99% and 95.8%, respectively, which come up to the theoretical values. A nonuniform DLC film, of which the refractive index gradually changes along the thickness, has been successfully deposited onto a Ge slice for the first time and the IR transmission of a nonuniform DLC film coated onto both sides of a Ge substrate at the wider wave band of 2.5–15 μm is over 85%.

Notes: Three large-area YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) superconducting thin films have been laser-deposited under almost identical conditions. However, the microwave surface resistance Rs of the films deviated greatly, they are 280 μΩ, 3.78 mΩ, and 97 mΩ, respectively. It was found that the structure and morphology of the films greatly influence the resistive losses at 10 GHz and 77 K of the YBCO thin films. Different loss mechanisms were discussed. For high Rs, the large angle grain boundaries were the dominate defect in the thin films and increased the Rs of the film markedly. For low Rs, it was mainly due to the misaligned "123'' grains in the thin films and the intrinsic loss. For Rs up to the mΩ range, besides the misaligned 123 grains, domain boundaries and nonsuperconducting outgrowths of different sizes appeared and this caused the rise of Rs value. All these results were given experimentally and discussed theoretically. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
