    Notes: Summary We have determined the DNA sequence of a BALB/cTla region class I gene from the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that had been identified previously as encoding a murine antigen by DNA-mediated gene transfer. Analysis of the DNA sequence shows, however, that this gene, the T1c gene from theTla c genotype, could not encode a TL antigen or any other functional class I molecule due to the presence of numerous stop codons and frameshift mutations in the coding regions. This result suggests that the earlier transformation data may have been incorrect or perhaps that the clone containing the T1c gene contains sequences that induced expression of a serologically reactiveTla gene in the genome of the recipient L cell. The T1c gene is structurally related to the previously sequenced T13c gene that encodes a serologically defined TL antigen. The 3′ half of the T1c gene including exons 4, 5, 6, and the 3′ untranslated region has about 85% nucleotide similarity (including introns) with the corresponding parts of the T13c gene; however, the 5′ half of the T1c gene has little homology with the T13c gene. There is a sharp line of demarcation between the homologous and nonhomologous regions, and this border occurs precisely at a B2 Alu repeat sequence present in the T13c gene. This suggests that a recombination event took place here and that an Alu repeat sequence that is known to have characteristics of transposable elements played some role in a recombination or gene conversion event.

However, the recent formulation of this paradigm has allowed little exploration of conceptual clustering as a means of improving performance. Furthermore, previous work in conceptual clustering has not explicitly dealt with constraints imposed by real world environments. This article presents COBWEB, a conceptual clustering system that organizes data so as to maximize inference ability. Additionally, COBWEB is incremental and computationally economical, and thus can be flexibly applied in a variety of domains.

    Notes: Abstract TheQ genes, specifying Qa antigens and situated in the extended part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the mouse, comprise a subgroup of MHC class I genes whose significance and function are still largely unknown. In screening a cDNA library made from the BALB/c inducer T-cell line Cl.Ly1-T1, we isolated 11 clones representingQ8/9, but none representingQ6 orQ7. Confirmatory evidence is given that theQ8/9 gene originated from fusion of the 5′ region of theQ8 gene with the 3′ region of theQ9 gene at a recombination site or hot spot in the vicinity of intron 4. Contrary to previous impressions thatQ8/9 is an inert pseudogene, we find that theQ8/9 gene can be functional and encode a Qa-2,3 antigen. One variety of the 11 Q8/9 clones isolated lacked exon 5, which encodes the transmembrane domain of class I glycoproteins, and thus may account for secretion of a soluble form of Qa-2,3 antigen thought to be released by activated T cells.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this work is to present the results of the phase behavior study for a live heavy oil during a pressure depletion process using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a tool to characterize foamy oil phenomena. The experiments were carried out in the pressure range of 13.1 to 1.4 MPa. Signal intensity images were obtained at each pressure and with respect to time, that is, approximately for a total time of 3 h after each pressure change. It is possible to see a variation in intensity across the sample. These changes can be associated with changes in mobility as well as segregation of the oil. It was also possible to observe that what we trust is the formation of gas channels at the last two pressure values, as it comes out of solution. A correlation between the transverse relaxation time T2 and temperature was established with the aim of producing one between T2 and viscosity. In this way viscosity maps for the live oil were obtained as a function of pressure and time. It was observed that above the bubble point, the viscosity maps varied from low to high to low with respect to time for the same pressure. Below the bubble point the situation is reverse. The viscosity map changes from high to low to high with respect to time for the same pressure. The study shows the potential use of MRI to follow viscosity changes during pressure depletion test in a PVT MRI cell.

    Description: [1]  Whereas the existence of pronounced orbitally-controlled periodicities is a major feature of Earth climate, its impact on landscape dynamics remains poorly understood. We use a Landscape Evolution Model (LEM) to systematically investigate the response of landscapes to a range of periodic oscillations in precipitation. The resulting sediment-flux evolution displays a pronounced sensitivity to the period of the input precipitation signal, such that, for a given erodibility, a specific periodicity maximizes the amplitude of the response. This optimal period of “resonance” scales as the inverse of the erodibility, but is progressively filtered out of the response when the intensity of hillslope diffusion increases. This frequency-dependent landscape behavior displayed by our model provides a mechanistic perspective on Molnar's [2004] proposition that ubiquitous changes in Late Cenozoic continental denudation could result directly from modifications in the spectral content of the climatic signal.
