Notes: A framework for a hybrid intelligent support system is proposed, on the basis of a discussion of the main problems of current computer-based support systems and the roles for computer-based systems in developing marketing strategy. The objectives of the framework are: to integrate the strengths of different support techniques and technologies; to assist strategic analysis; to couple strategic analysis with managers' judgement; to help managers deal with uncertainty; and to aid strategic thinking. Within this framework, the benefits of different strategic analysis models are combined to offer enhanced support for a logical sequence of strategic analysis, while the advantages of diverse support techniques and technologies are integrated and fitted to support different aspects of the marketing strategy development process. As well as the theoretical basis for the proposed framework, the paper also examines the associated technical issues.

Notes: Extends earlier work on the relationship between business process re-engineering (BPR) and human resource management (HRM). The previous work examined how closely HRM practices in organisations which had undergone BPR matched what the literature suggested. Presents the commonalities that emerged with respect to HRM practices as a "typical" pattern, and a "vertical analysis" is carried out to compare the individual organisations studied with this pattern. Ten of the 11 organisations are found to fit the typical pattern very well, but the 11th is substantially different; examines the reasons why this might be.

Notes: Examines the relationship between business process re-engineering (BPR) and human resource management. A number of propositions relating to aspects of human resource management are derived from the literature, and examined by interviewing senior managers in UK organisations where business process re-engineering projects had either been completed or were still in progress. The propositions are analysed under four major headings: structure and culture, the role of managers, team working, and reward system. The conclusion is that BPR principles on the management of human resources as stated in the literature seem to find a full application in most of the organisations investigated. However, there were two exceptions to the expectations in the literature. The first was that there would be a change to a process-based structure; a change is seen in the majority of cases, but to a matrix style of organisation. The second was the implication that team-based reward systems would appear; this has only happened in a minority of cases. Overall, for the organisations studied which have undergone BPR, a very clear pattern emerges with respect to human resource management practices.

Notes: Reports on an investigation of computer-based support for developing marketing strategy. First, on the basis of a literature study, the nature of marketing strategy development is clarified. The needs for computer-based support are identified. The status and underlying problems of existing computer-based information systems for developing marketing strategy are then examined. Finally, a mail questionnaire survey on computer-based support for developing marketing strategy is discussed. The major issues addressed in the survey were: managers' needs for computer-based support in developing marketing strategy; the current provision of computer-based information systems; and the gaps between the identified needs and current provision. It is believed that this was the first study to use a large-scale questionnaire survey to explore these issues. The findings provide important evidence and implications for both researchers and designers of computer-based support for marketing strategy development.

Notes: Abstract Changes in the activity of haemolymph hydrolases during metamorphosis was examined using the wax moth Galleria mellonella. Total haemolymph protein concentration showed a two-fold, approximately linear decline during passage from mature larva to pharate adult. Starch gel electrophoresis of standard volume haemolymph samples showed a differential loss of certain hydrolases during development. Acid phosphatase activity increases markedly at the time of maximum tissue dissolution at about the third day after pupation, and subsequently declines, but remains considerably higher than in the late larva. The rise in specific activity of haemolymph acid phosphatase is thought to be correlated with lysosomal activity.

Notes: [Auszug] Deflexion of the cornicle or a light touch on the aphid's body elicits the release from the cornicle of a fluid composed of lipid droplets in a water vehicle. The lipid droplets coalesce, and when in contact with a solid surface, rapidly crystallize to form a hard waxy plaque. A small predator, ...

Notes: [Auszug] Adult ganglion cells of the Danaus optic lobe are formed by divisions of aggregated neuroblasts located at the lateral surface of the immature brain. Each neuroblast divides asymmetrically to produce another neuroblast and a smaller cell, the ganglion mother cell which then lies medial to it (Fig. ...
