2,2′-Biphenyldiylbis(dimethylphosphane): Stereochemistry, Chiral Rhodium(I) Complexes, Formation of Cyclic Quaternary Salts and Ylides, and an Unexpected Ylide Ring Contraction to a 9 λ5-PhosphaphenanthreneAs a precursor for the synthesis of a cyclic carbodiphosphorane (8), 2,2′-biphenyldiylbis(dimethylphosphane) (1) was prepared from 2,2′-dilithiobiphenyl and chlorodimethylphosphane. According to NMR data, 1 has C2 symmetry with nonequivalent methyl groups at each phosphorus atom. [(1,5-C8H12)RhCl]2 and the ylide complex (1,5-C8H12)Rh[(CH2)2P(t-Bu)2] (3) are converted into the chelate complexes 2 and 5 through substitution of the diene by 1, whose chiral stereochemistry leads to the corresponding spectral properties. - With CH2Br2, 1 is transformed into the cyclic diquaternary salt 6, which can be deprotonated by one equivalent of LiCH3 base to form the semiylide quaternary salt 7. Both salts, 6 and 7, retain C2 symmetry. Further dehydrohalogenation of 6 (or 7) using KH in THF affords 9,9-dimethyl-9λ5-phosphaphenanthrene (9). This ring contraction probably occurs via the carbodiphosphorane intermediate 8, with spontaneous elimination of a CH3PCH2 fragment. The red ylide 9 is quenched by addition of HCl to yield the almost colourless phosphonium salt 10.
Notes:
