    Notes: Abstract A theoretical model for correlating odor thresholds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with their simple physicochemical properties has been developed. The partition coefficient between octanol and water, and that between water and air were used to model the partition process of airborne chemicals into the biophase where the olfactory signal is transformed. Validation was performed by fitting data on odor thresholds and partition coefficients for acetates, alcohols, ketones and amines into the model. Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) for the four series were developed from the model. The results suggest that acetates, alcohols and ketones probably bind to a common receptor site located in the hydrophobic interior of the lipid bi-layer membrane of the olfactory cilia. Amines probably bind to a different receptor site located closer to the mucus layer. The results also suggest that odor thresholds of related VOCs which appear to share a common receptor site may be additive.

    Notes: Summary The results obtained indicate that the deposition of absorbed hydrocarbons in different segments of the muscle tissue of the sea mullet is proportional to the lipid content of the segment. However the results give no clear indication as to whether the total lipid content of the muscle tissue of individual fish influences the uptake of hydrocarbons from the environment. Evidence has been presented for different rates of metabolism of the n-alkanes as compared to the iso-alkanes and related compounds. Metabolic processes in the sea mullet result in the preferential degradation of the n-alkanes leaving a hydrocarbon mixture in the sea mullet enriched with iso-alkanes and related compounds.

    Notes: Abstract The pathways of cadmium (Cd) uptake and transfer within an estuarine planktonic community from the Patuxent River, Maryland, USA, were investigated using an assemblage of natural phytoplankton and the copepod Eurytemora affinis Poppe. The experiment was carried out in October 1992 in replicated 500-liter, flow-through, fiberglass tanks. Growth rate, species composition, and Cd loading affected the accumulation of Cd by the phytoplankton. Uptake of Cd by phytoplankton was proportional to the amount of Cd available in the water column. Partition coefficients (K d) for phytoplankton uptake averaged 4.4 × 104. As metal loading rates and phytoplankton species composition changed during the 12-d experiment, Cd partitioning declined. Transfer of Cd to E. affinis occurred from Cd-laden phytoplankton, with levels in the copepods being approximately the same as, or somewhat less, than in the phytoplankton. Some Cd uptake occurred in copepods exposed to dissolved Cd only; however, the uptake was considerably less than that seen from food. Thus, Cd content of higher trophic levels, such as copepods, can be affected by the degree of Cd incorporation in their food source, and by ecological factors regulating phytoplankton ingestion.

    Notes: Abstract The pollution of soil by arsenic contained in tannery waste is reported. Over 81 years of operation, a variety of arsenical compounds including sodium arsenite were used as pesticides at the tannery, the arsenic finding its way to the site in question as liquid waste which was disposed of either by burial or spray issigation. X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) was used to determine the levels of arsenic in the soil. Concentrations recorded were comparable to those in soils polluted by agricultural use of arsenical pesticides or by contamination from mining activities. In contrast to arsenic pollution from other sources however, contamination extends to a considerable depth through the soil profile. Analysis of soil water by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry showed evidence of arsenic movement through this medium although penetration had not extended to the groundwater. Batch leaching of soil samples with distilled water confirmed the potential mobility of arsenic.

    Notes: Abstract The Fraction I hydrocarbons (containing alkanes, some alkenes, cyclo-alkanes or-alkenes) in the top 2 cm of sediment, in two species of deposit feeders (the holothurian Holothuria atra and the gastropod Strombus luhuanus), and in their feces were analyzed. Collections were made at Heron Island in December, 1982, and analyses were completed in January 1983. On the basis of their relative concentrations in whole samples, and in the lipid fractions of sediment and animal tissue, the Fraction I hydrocarbons were placed in three categories. Some compounds give evidence of passive movement from a high concentration in sediment lipid into an area of lower concentration in animal lipid fractions. Others may be selectively excreted and/or degraded by animals; while still others appear to be selectively accumulated and/or produced in animal tissue. The relatively short-chain n-alkanes, mono-olefins and C25 cyclo-alkanes or alkenes in sediment and feces showed a net loss from sediment on its passage through the animals, whereas C22 to C32 n-alkanes, showed a net production in the guts of the animals and contributed to the pool of these compounds in sediments. About 40 to 55% of the group of short-chain n-alkanes, mono-olefins and C25 cyclo-alkanes or alkenes in sediment are converted into long-chain n-alkanes as the sediment passes through the guts of H. atra and S. luhuanus. H. atra remove about 0.2% of the standing pool of short-chain n-alkanes, mono-olefins and C25 cyclo-alkanes or alkenes in an average square-metre of sediment, of 2 cm depth, per day, and they contribute an amount of n-C22 to n-C32 alkanes equal to about 1.1% of the standing pool of these compounds.

    Notes: Abstract Sediments from the reef flat at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, were treated with known amounts of diesel and the uptake and clearance characteristics of the diesel n-alkanes by the gastropod Strombus luhuanus, in the field and aquaria, were measured. In each case, the uptake curve was unusual in that the concentration, expressed in terms of wet weight, reached a maxima within 24 h and then declined to relatively low levels. The maximum concentrations reached were below that in the sediments. Within the range investigated, the alkanes exhibited a substantial decline in the uptake rate-constant with increasing carbon number, tricosane exhibiting approximately 25% of the uptake rate-constant of dodecane. On the other hand, persistence, measured as the half-life, showed an increase with carbon number. Dodecane had a half life of 0.6 d and octadecane one of 2.2 d.
