    Notes: A transport barrier is introduced in the one-dimensional sandpile model by reducing the local flux in a barrier region. This reduction causes a modification in the structure of the avalanches and triggers quasiperiodic fluctuations of the particle fluxes. The frequency of these fluctuations is inversely proportional to the transport barrier width. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new class of low aspect ratio toroidal hybrid stellarators is found using a more general plasma confinement optimization criterion than quasisymmetrization. The plasma current profile and shape of the outer magnetic flux surface are used as control variables to achieve near constancy of the longitudinal invariant J* on internal flux surfaces (quasiomnigeneity), in addition to a number of other desirable physics target properties. A range of compact (small aspect ratio A), low plasma current devices have been found with significantly improved confinement, both for thermal as well as energetic (collisionless) particle components. With reasonable increases in magnetic field and geometric size, such devices can also be scaled to confine 3.5 MeV alpha particle orbits.

    Notes: The existence of a critical gradient is an important feature of many transport models. [M. Kotschenreuther et al., Phys. Plasmas 2, 2381 (1995)]. However, fundamental differences exist in the dynamics near marginal stability, depending on whether the transport phenomena are controlled by strict (linear) marginal stability or by a self-organized criticality. One of the most striking differences is in the stiffness of the profiles. In this paper, a sand pile model is used to gain some basic understanding of the stiffness of the profile under different dynamics. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Transitions to an enhanced confinement regime in tokamak plasmas with negative central magnetic shear have been observed in a number of devices. A simple model incorporating the nonlinear coupling between the turbulent fluctuations and the sheared radial electric field is added to a transport model in order to investigate the dynamics of the transition to this enhanced confinement mode. In this model, by incorporating both the instability growth rate profiles and particle and/or power deposition profiles, a rich variety of transition dynamics is uncovered. Transition dynamics and their concomitant thresholds are examined within the context of these models. In the course of investigating these transitions, potential methods for triggering and controlling these enhanced confinement regimes have been discovered and are discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In Heliotron E [K. Uo, Nucl. Fusion 25, 1243 (1985)] shifted-in vacuum magnetic field configuration, the q profile varies from just above 2 at the magnetic axis to 0.4 at the plasma edge. For low-β plasmas, resistive interchange modes are the dominant low-n instabilities at the plasma core. They saturate at low fluctuation levels. Above a threshold value, the ideal m/n=2/1 modes become unstable. They can be resonant or nonresonant modes depending on the value of q(0). In either case, their nonlinear evolution leads to a sudden crash of the pressure within the r/a=0.3 radius (sawtooth oscillation). When beta is increased further, the q=2 surface moves out of the plasma, and the ideal m/n=2/1 modes are effectively stabilized when q(0)〈1.85. As a result, the sawtooth oscillations are suppressed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A model for plasma transport near marginal stability is presented. The model is based on subcri- tical resistive pressure-gradient-driven turbulence. Three-dimensional nonlinear calculations based on this model show effective transport for subcritical mean profiles. This model exhibits some of the characteristic properties of self-organized criticality. Perturbative transport techniques are used to elucidate the transport properties. Propagation of positive and negative pulses is studied. The observed results suggest a possible explanation of the apparent nonlocal effects ob- served with perturbative experiments in tokamaks. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The radial structure of tokamak profiles determined by anomalous transport is elucidated by studying the statistical mechanics of a sand pile automaton for which the toppling conditions depend on local gradient, alone. In this representation, the sand pile dynamics is Markovian, and spatial profiles may be obtained from calculated expectation values of the local gradient. The Markovian structure of the dynamics is exploited to analytically derive a local gradient probability distribution function from a generalized kinetic equation. For homogeneous, weak noise, the calculated expectation value of the gradient is well below the marginally stable state. In the over-driven limit (i.e., strong homogeneous noise), a region of super-critical gradient is shown to form near the bottom of the pile. For the case of localized noise, the mean self-organized profile is always sub-critical. These results are consistent with numerical studies of simple automata. Their relevance to and implications for tokamak confinement are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: For treating Alfvén waves driven unstable by α particles, an alternative to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory gyro-Landau fluid approach is suggested. Its primary advantage is that this method can simultaneously treat fluid nonlinearities and kinetic quasilinear effects.     Notes: A simple dynamic model of spatiotemporally propagating transport barriers and transition fronts from low (L) to high (H) confinement regimes is presented. The model introduces spatial coupling (via transport) into the coupled evolution equations for flow shear and fluctuation intensity, thus coupling the supercritical L to H bifurcation instability to turbulent transport. Hence, fast spatiotemporal front propagation and evolutionary behavior result. The theory yields expressions for the propagation velocity and termination point of an L–H transition front and transport barrier. When the evolution of the pressure gradient, ∇Pi, and the contribution of ∇Pi to sheared electric field, Er′, is included, the ambient pretransition pressure gradient acts as a local source term that drives the evolution of the poloidal velocity shear. The transition may then evolve either as a spatiotemporally propagating front or as a uniform (i.e., nonlocal) fluctuation reduction or quench. The precise route to transition adopted depends on the relative magnitudes of the front transit time, τT, and the fluctuation reduction time, τf, respectively. The relevance of spatiotemporally propagating L–H transition fronts to the very high confinement regime (VH mode) evolution in DIII-D [R. I. Pinsker and the DIII-D Team, Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1992 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1993), Vol. 1, p. 683] and in the Joint European Torus (JET) [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1990 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 1, p. 27] is discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The temporal statistics of density and potential fluctuations measured in both the main chamber and divertor far scrape-off layer (SOL) regions (〉5 mm outside the magnetic separatrix) of the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [I. M. Hutchinson et al., Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511 (1994)] are found to change markedly with plasma density. As the plasma density is increased, the fluctuations become correlated over long and short time scales and exhibit a higher level of persistence and intermittency. Correspondingly, fluctuation-induced cross-field particle fluxes are found to increase by a factor of ∼5 when the plasma density is doubled. These observations are consistent with results from SOL particle balance, which indicate an increased level of cross-field transport as the density is raised. These observations also support the idea that SOL transport dynamics behave as a self-organized system, particularly at high plasma densities. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
