Notes: Analogous to the treatment of the spin-correlated crystal field, a new type of lanthanide correlation crystal field, which depends on the relative orientations of the individual 4f electron orbital angular momenta and the total orbital angular momentum, is postulated. Associated sets of parameters have been obtained for TmCl3⋅6H2O, Er3+:LaCl3, and Pr3+:LaCl3 from the quadratic moments of the J-multiplet energy levels. The results show that this field is noticeable in the Pr3+:LaCl3 spectrum in which the particularly well known deviance of the 1D2 multiplet found in conventional crystal field fitting is largely eliminated.

Notes: The practical implementation of biorthogonal perturbation techniques to calculate one- and two-electron crystal field parameters is described. The systems and basis sets used in the calculations are described in detail, and several crucial aspects of the numerical procedures are discussed. A complete listing of second order perturbation diagrams with associated denominator corrections is given.

Notes: Contributions to the Slater parameters, crystal field and correlation crystal field parameters for the two-ion system Pr3+–Cl− are calculated using the many-body diagrammatic expansion technique. Both ligand polarization and covalency are shown not to provide significant contributions to the Slater parameters. Ligand polarization is also eliminated as a major contributor to the correlation crystal field, but this mechanism does produce significant crystal field contributions. New, important, contributions to all three sets of parameters are identified and the overall results are related to experimental data.

Notes: Previous measurements of triton burnup in deuterium tokamak plasmas show an anomalously small burnup for low-q discharges with significant magnetohydrodynamic activity. This may have important implications for alpha particle burnup in a fusion reactor. By developing a detector capable of time-resolved 14-MeV neutron measurements, it should be possible to separate triton confinement and slowdown anomalies. We are testing lithium-free glass scintillators which would observe 14-MeV neutrons through prompt 28Si(n, p) 28Al reactions. These detectors are not sensitive to the much larger 2.5-MeV neutron background and should also have less sensitivity to the large thermal neutron background when compared to conventional 6Li-depleted glasses. Measurements of detector sensitivity to signal and potential background sources are being performed using a 14-MeV neutron source and radioactive sources. The expected signal behavior under various DIII-D plasma and beam conditions will also be presented.

Notes: Curved- and flat-diffraction crystal spectrographs were developed to collect x-ray spectra from high-atomic-number elements (cadmium–rare earths) in the 5–17-A(ring) region. The plasma source was generated by the 24-beam, frequency-tripled light of the OMEGA laser system. The spectral patterns were identified with the aid of atomic structure calculations and from Moseley plots of isoelectronic sequences. The Ne-like (third-order diffraction) and Na-like ionization stages were observed in the Cd and Sn spectra. The rare-earth spectra were predominantly 3d-4p, 4f transitions over a range of ionization stages involving the M shell. Calibration spectra were obtained with L-series transitions from Fe and Cu targets and K lines from Si plasma excited in the glass supporting stalk.

Notes: A diagrammatic many-body perturbation approach using nonorthogonal basis sets is used to derive explicit expressions for an Hermitian effective Hamiltonian matrix. Approximate overcompleteness is shown not to lead to any difficulties provided that an exact inverse of the overlap matrix is obtained. Applications of the formalism to crystal-field calculations are discussed in detail.

Notes: Relationships between crystal field invariants and superposition model parameters are established. Various strategies are examined for determining and assessing the reliability of crystal field parameters for lanthanide ions in low-symmetry sites. In particular, a new method of estimating crystal field parameters is proposed using crystal field invariants in conjunction with the superposition model. The importance of using a fixed reference frame throughout a series of fitting based on approximate symmetries is stressed and this leads us to identify a new simplified parametrization for lanthanide ions in LaF3 which is not related to an approximate symmetry.

Notes: The expected results are presented for a fast, selective 14-MeV neutron detector which should be capable of separately measuring the confinement and energy loss of fast tritons for the first time. The tritons, from D–D reactions in a deuterium plasma, are observed when they collide with deuterons while slowing down, producing a characteristic 14-MeV neutron. Triton experiments are an excellent test for the confinement of fusion-produced alphas in a self-sustained reactor, which is critically dependent on plasma heating by the alphas. The triton production rate is pulsed by injecting a burst of deuterium using a neutral-beam heating source. The temporal distribution of the 14-MeV neutron flux is determined by the confinement and slowdown rate of the tritons. The expected flux is calculated as a function of time for the predicted triton transport, anomalous particle losses, and anomalous energy-loss rates, thus demonstrating how the various effects can be separately determined.
