Description: The chemokine receptor 5 (CKR5) protein serves as a secondary receptor on CD4(+) T lymphocytes for certain strains of human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1). The CKR5 structural gene was mapped to human chromosome 3p21, and a 32-base pair deletion allele (CKR5Delta32) was identified that is present at a frequency of approximately0.10 in the Caucasian population of the United States. An examination of 1955 patients included among six well-characterized acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cohort studies revealed that 17 deletion homozygotes occurred exclusively among 612 exposed HIV-1 antibody-negative individuals (2.8 percent) and not at all in 1343 HIV-1-infected individuals. The frequency of CKR5 deletion heterozygotes was significantly elevated in groups of individuals that had survived HIV-1 infection for more than 10 years, and, in some risk groups, twice as frequent as their occurrence in rapid progressors to AIDS. Survival analysis clearly shows that disease progression is slower in CKR5 deletion heterozygotes than in individuals homozygous for the normal CKR5 gene. The CKR5Delta32 deletion may act as a recessive restriction gene against HIV-1 infection and may exert a dominant phenotype of delaying progression to AIDS among infected individuals.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Dean, M -- Carrington, M -- Winkler, C -- Huttley, G A -- Smith, M W -- Allikmets, R -- Goedert, J J -- Buchbinder, S P -- Vittinghoff, E -- Gomperts, E -- Donfield, S -- Vlahov, D -- Kaslow, R -- Saah, A -- Rinaldo, C -- Detels, R -- O'Brien, S J -- DA04334/DA/NIDA NIH HHS/ -- MO1-RR06020/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- N01-HD-4-3200/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- etc. -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1996 Sep 27;273(5283):1856-62.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, National Cancer Institute (NCI), Frederick, MD 21702-1201, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8791590" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The paper describes co-robotic devices, aiming at accomplishing surgical operations by remote overseeing and manipulation. The concept design of a modular layout is presented, assuring body penetration by curved and twisted paths, with minimal impact. The fixture develops as an articulated snake-like forearm, carrying a wrist and the pertinent effectors; scalpels, scissors, sewing rigs, cameras, etc. The fixture is a good example of a micro electro mechanical system, with force-actuation and shape-control being intrinsic properties. Different options are studied and the related basic operational characteristics are summarised and compared. The jointed forearm might include one to six blocks. Specifically, task-oriented end-effectors are considered, e.g. a self-operating sewing rig, able to operate with a single thread. The robot co-operation will drastically modify surgery practice, giving freedom from anthropocentric bounds; the paper introduces such opportunities, with comments on typical control strategies and hints on actual performance, inferred by testing on virtual reality and digital mock-ups.

Notes: The paper discusses commercial cleaning robots available on the market. It introduces Gecko, a virtual prototype of a cleaning robot. Gecko has been conceived, assembling mainly standard components, and the actual behaviour in running conditions is shown by using consistent digital mock ups: Gecko is able to fully clean and sanitise floors, walls and ceilings. To comply with health needs, the robot cleans surfaces using steam. Details on abilities and components are provided. The wall sustentation is guaranteed by four suction cups. The path planning allows a 2D Cartesian motion. To simplify the robot control, innovative "automatic suspensions" are integrated in the sustain and actuation system. Finally, other possible applications fields for such a robot are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A geometrical characterisation for externally pressurized journal bearings having been defined, the relationship between geometry and dynamic behaviour is investigated systematically in the present paper. The result of the investigation is a set of diagrams covering cases of practical interest not presented to such an extent before.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Over the past few years many mathematical models have been proposed for the analysis of externally pressurized bearings. But the gaps between experimental observations and the results of model analysis are still wide. These gaps are due to the simplifying hypothesis, that underlie the methods. A mathematical model for designing bearings that takes account of the effects of journal rotation has recently been devised at the Institute of Applied Mechanics of Genoa University. A test stand has also been designed and built, fitted with up-to-date instruments for the experimental analysis of bearings for several journal rotation speeds or for different load conditions. This paper presents a summary of the big program of experimental tests conducted with Italian CNR support and compares these experimental results with the theoretical results obtained by recasting the mathematical model to allow for the principal effects evidenced by the tests.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The problem of the dynamics of a rigid satellite in the case of no damping has been thoroughly treated in several papers[1]; less literature is available on the problem of damped satellites. Furthermore, the formulas describing the dynamics are quite complicated and so their interpretation is not straightforward. This study presents the results of one attempt to interpret the dynamics on the basis of relatively simple physical and cinematic considerations, which lend themselves to an easy interpretation of the performance and a simple determination of the most critical cases, for continuous and pulsed external torques both in the damped and undamped cases.

Notes: Abstract In prokaryotes, the RecA protein plays a pivotal role in homologous recombination, catalyzing the transfer of a single DNA strand into an homologous molecule. Structural homologs of the bacterial RecA protein, called Rad51, have been found in different eukaryotes (from yeast to man), suggesting a certain level of conservation in recombination pathways among living organisms. We have cloned the homolog of RAD51 in Caenorhabditis elegans. The CeRAD51 gene is transcribed into two alternative mRNAs and potentially codes for two proteins of 395 and 357 amino acids in length, respectively. We discuss the evolutionary implications of these findings.
