Finely divided manganese(II)hydroxide is topochemically oxidized to β-MnOOH by air having a low moisture content; in a damp-atmosphere this process is followed by a transformation to γ-MnOOH.At higher moisture content, primarily a mixture of Mn3O4 and β-MnOOH is formed, followed by the conversion of β- into γ-MnOOH and, finally, by the oxidation of Mn3O4 to γ-MnOOH. Needles of γ-MnOOh being several μ's long are the end product.

Lockere Präparate von Mangan(II)-hydroxid werden von Luft mit kleinem Feuchtigkeitsgehalt topochemisch zu β-MnOOH oxydiert. In feuchter Atmosphäre wandelt sich β-ziemlich rasch in γ-MnOOH um. Bei höherem Feuchtigkeitsgehalt der Luft entsteht zunächst ein Gemenge von β-MnOOH und Mn3O4, nach einiger Zeit wandelt sich β- in γ-MnOOH um und schließlich wird auch Mn3O4 zu γ-MnOOH oxydiert. Dabei entstehen bis zu mehrere μ lange Nadeln.
