    Description: A vortex gas lens concept is presented. Such a lens has a potential power density capability of 10 to the 9th - 10 to the 10th w/sq cm. An experimental prototype was constructed, and the divergence half angle of the exiting beam was measured as a function of the lens operating parameters. Reasonably good agreement is found between the experimental results and theoretical calculations. The expanded beam was observed to be steady, and no strong, potentially beam-degrading jets were found to issue from the ends of the lens. Estimates of random beam deflection angles to be expected due to boundary layer noise are presented; these angles are very small.

    Description: A nitrogen-water vapor mixture simulating hydrogen-air combustion products was produced and expanded in the nozzle of the 16-inch Combustion-Driven Shock Tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center. The measured OH concentrations are smaller than those calculated by the conventional one-temperature reaction model even when the reaction rate coefficients are multiplied by a factor of 10. The values calculated by a two-temperature model bound the experimental values under one operating condition, but fail to do so in the other. The discrepancy between experiment and calculation is unresolved.

    Description: Results are presented of the first high-speed propulsion-related experiments performed in the NASA-Ames 16-Inch Shock Tunnel, designed to simulate combustor inlet conditions at approximately Mach 14. Results demonstrate the capability of the tunnel for high-speed propulsion testing and yield data on the performance of 30-deg flush wall injectors tested in the tunnel. The experimental results are compared with those of a CFD analysis.

    Description: Flow characteristics of NASA's 16-Inch Shock Tunnel are determined for purposes of providing hypersonic propulsion simulation capability. The key tunnel operating parameters are the incident shock speed and reservoir pressure and enthalpy. Flow characteristics of concern are the nozzle exit pressure, temperature, Mach number, Reynolds number, chemical composition, and flow uniformity. Surface mounted gages (for pressure and heat transfer) and nonintrusive optical flow diagnostics (emission and absorption spectroscopy and holographic interferometry) are used to verify tunnel conditions. Experimental measurements are used to validate computational analysis for predicting facility performance, and CFD is used to interpret the free stream optical diagnostic measurements.

    Description: The Electric Arc Shock Tube (EAST) facility and the Hypervelocity Free Flight Aerodynamic Facility (HFFAF) at NASA Ames Research Center are described. These facilities have been in operation since the 1960s and have supported many NASA missions and technology development initiatives. The facilities have world-unique capabilities that enable experimental studies of real-gas aerothermal, gas dynamic, and kinetic phenomena of atmospheric entry.

    Description: High stagnation pressures and enthalpies are required for the testing of aerospace vehicles such as aerospace planes, aeroassist vehicles, and reentry vehicles. Among the most useful ground test facilities for performing such tests are shock tunnels. With a given driver gas condition, the enthalpy and pressure in the driven tube nozzle reservoir condition can be varied by changing the driven tube geometry and initial gas fill pressure. Reducing the driven tube diameter yields only very modest increases in reservoir pressure and enthalpy. Reducing the driven tube initial gas fill pressure can increase the reservoir enthalpy significantly, but at the cost of reduced reservoir pressure and useful test time. A new technique, the insertion of a converging section in the driven tube is found to produce substantial increases in both reservoir pressure and enthalpy. Using a one-dimensional inviscid full kinetics code, a number of different locations and shapes for the converging driven tube section were studied and the best cases found. For these best cases, for driven tube diameter reductions of factors of 2 and 3, the reservoir pressure can be increased by factors of 2.1 and 3.2, respectively and the enthalpy can be increased by factors of 1.5 and 2.1, respectively.

    Description: The NASA Ames 16-Inch Shock Tunnel has been reactivated after seventeen years of inactivity. In the years before deactivating the facility, it was operated at enthalpies of 4,700 J/gm and pressures up to 260 atm or at enthalpies of 1900 J/gm over a wide pressure range. Since reactivating, the facility has been operated at enthalpies up to 12,000 J/gm and pressures up to 408 atm. The present paper describes the steps taken in upgrading the facility and summarizes the currently achievable conditions. The selection of the driver gas, the steps taken to improve the driver burn, and the diaphragm opening techniques are described. The pressure and heat flux instrumentation, the optical diagnostics and the data acquisition system are also described.

    Description: Space debris poses a major risk to spacecraft. In low earth orbit, impact velocities can be 10 - 11 km/s and as high as 15 km/s. For debris shield design, it would be desirable to be able to launch projectiles of known shape and mass to these velocities. The design of the proposed 10 - 11 km/sec gun uses, as a starting point, the Ames 1.28/0.22 two stage gun, which has achieved muzzle velocities of 10 - 11.3 km/sec. That gun is scaled up to a 0.3125 launch tube diameter. The gun is then optimized with respect to maximum pressures by varying the pump tube length to diameter ratio (L/D), the piston mass and the hydrogen pressure. A pump tube L/D of 36.4 is selected giving the best overall performance. Piezometric ratios for the optimized guns are found to be ~2.3, much more favorable than for more traditional two stage light gas guns, which range from 4 to 6. (The piezometric ratio for a gun is defined as the maximum projectile base pressure divided by the constant projectile base pressure which, acting over the entire barrel length, would produce the same muzzle velocity.) The maximum powder chamber pressures are 20 to 30 ksi. To reduce maximum pressures, the desirable range of the included angle of the cone of the high pressure coupling is found to be 7.3 to 14.6 degrees. Lowering the break valve rupture pressure is found to lower the maximum projectile base pressure, but to raise the maximum gun pressure. For the optimized gun with a pump tube L/D of 36.4, increasing the muzzle velocity by decreasing the projectile mass and increasing the powder loads is studied. It appears that saboted spheres could be launched to 10.25 and possibly as high as 10.8 km/sec, and that disc-like plastic models could be launched to 11.05 km/s. The use of a tantalum liner to greatly reduce bore erosion and increase muzzle velocity is discussed. With a tantalum liner, CFD code calculations predict muzzle velocities as high as 12 to 13 km/s.

    Description: An experimental investigation was carried out into the replacement of air in the driven tube of a reflected shock tunnel by an N2O/N2 mixture in order to increase the test time. The incident shock velocities were between 2 and 3 km/sec. Test times were estimated from light emission histories in the driven tube (at distance of L/D = 46.5 from the main diaphragm) and in the nozzle at an area ratio of 27.9 and from pressure histories just upstream of the nozzle entrance (at L/D = 54). The test times estimated from the light emission histories in the driven tube showed that consistent increases of 60-100% were obtained upon substituting N2O/N2 for air in the driven tube. These increases were in very good agreement with theoretical estimates. The test times estimated from the light emission histories in the nozzle or pressure histories at the nozzle inlet showed significant improvements with N2O/N2 only for cases where the facility was operated at substantially overtailored conditions. It is believed that this is due to the greater stability of the driver-driven interface at overtailored operating conditions. At overtailored operating conditions, test times increases of 60-100% with N2O/N2 were observed with all three diagnostic techniques. These increases were in reasonable agreement with theoretical estimates.

    Description: It has been suggested previously that the performance of scramjet propulsion system may be improved by the use of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy bypass: an MHD generator could be made to decelerate the flow entering the combustor, thereby improving combustion efficiency, and the electrical power generated could be made to accelerate the flow exiting from the combustor prior to expanding through the nozzle. In one of such proposed schemes, the MHD generator is proposed to be operated at a low temperature and ionization is to be achieved under nonequilibrium by the application of an external power. In the present work, the required power of such an external source is calculated assuming a 100%-efficient nonequilibrium ionization scheme. The power required is that needed to prevent the degree of ionization from reaching equilibrium with the low gas temperature. The flow is seeded with potassium or cesium. Specific impulse is calculated with and without turbulent friction. The results show that, for typical intended flight conditions, the specific impulse obtained is substantially higher than that of a typical scramjet, but the required external-power is several times that of the power generated in the MHD generator.
