    Notes: Here we present experimental evidence of the strong modification of the CdS photoluminescence when it is embedded in a SiO2 colloidal photonic crystal. When the emitted light matches a forbidden photonic band in the matrix, inhibition of the semiconductor photoluminescence is achieved. In this work we prove the effective control of this effect by means of the photonic lattice parameter of the host. CdS was grown by chemical bath deposition and its quality has been checked employing Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy is used to study the morphology of the composite. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this letter, we investigate the optical properties of packed monodisperse silica submicron spheres by means of optical transmission measurements. The results are compatible with a three dimensional face centered cubic order in these solid structures. The lattice parameter of these structures, and therefore their optical properties, can be easily tuned through the sphere size (between 200 and 700 nm) thus covering the whole visible and near infrared spectrum. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Silica opals are used as templates where CdS is infiltrated with the aim to build inverse structures with enhanced photonic band gap properties. A control on the degree of infiltration, from 0% to 100%, is attained. The band gap at L is studied finding that the width decreases and then recovers as a function of CdS infilling (from bare opal to fully loaded structure). This is well accounted for by theory based on two different modes for the growth of CdS inside the opal pores. A shell mode seems to govern the growth at low infiltration (less than 10%). High quality opal templates, appropriate sintering, and a high and uniform infiltration are required to ensure further optical characterization of the inverse systems. Only heavily loaded structures are apt to be inverted. The gap in the fully loaded and the inverse opal are, respectively, two and three times broader than in the starting opal. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Seed storage protein content of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var. durum) has an important effect on nutritional value and pasta-making characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine by association with genetic markers the number, chromosomal location, and magnitude of effect of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling protein concentration in kernels. A set of 65 recombinant inbred lines (RIs) was developed by single seed descent from a cross between cultivated durum wheat cv. ‘Messapia’ (low protein content) and accession MG4343 of the wild tetraploid wheat var. dicoccoides (high protein content). This population was characterized for eight morphological, six storage protein, one isozyme and 124 RFLP loci. Field trials were conducted in one location in 1993 and two locations in 1994. QTLs were mapped by regression analysis on each marker locus for each location and for the average across environments. A total of six putative QTLs were located on chromosome arms 4BS, SAL, 6AS, 6BS and 7BS. The number and size of QTLs detected varied across environments. The marker with the highest r2 value per QTL in each environment and across environments was chosen for a multiple linear regression analysis, which explained 49.2- 56.4% of the phenotypic variation for protein content. Only some of the markers were found to be negatively associated with plant grain yield and/or seed weight in one or two of the environments.

    Notes: Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) is a powerful technique which can readily be applied to a wide range of species for mapping purposes. AFLPs were added to a linkage map of durum wheat constructed using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). The mapping population included 65 recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between the durum wheat cultivar ‘Messapia’ and accession ‘MG4343’ of the wild Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides (Körn.). Genomic DNA was digested with MseI (4-cutter) and Sse83871 (8-cutter). Using a silver-staining protocol, 14 primer combinations revealed 421 clearly scorable amplicons including 100 polymorphisms. The presence of nine pairs of bands linked in repulsion phase with each pair generated by one primer combination suggested the presence of codominant alleles; sequence analysis of four band pairs confirmed their codominant nature. The integration of 80 AFLP loci extended the map in several telomeric regions, reduced the size of four large gaps present in the previous map, and eliminated one gap. The new map obtained after the inclusion of the 80 AFLP loci and eight additional RFLP loci spans 2063cM which represent a 52.6% increment compared with the previous map. Compared with the distribution of RFLPs, no significant clustering of AFLP markers was observed.

    Notes: SDS-sedimentation volume (SV) is a biochemical index widely used to evaluate flour quality in durum and bread wheats. Significant association between SV and endosperm proteins (gliadin, high-molecular-weight- and low-molecular-weight-glutenin subunits) have been reported. Protein loci, however, account for only a portion of the total genetic variability. The objective of this study was to identify and locate quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with SV in a set of recombinant inbred (RI) lines, derived from a cross between the cv.‘Messapia’ of durum wheat and the accession MG4343 of the var. dicoccoides, and characterized for 259 genetic and molecular (RFLP) markers. Significant differences were detected for the quality index in the six environments examined, while the pattern of variability was that of a quantitative trait. Regression analysis of marker loci and sedimentation volume indicated, as expected, that chromosome 1B, on which are located the Gli-B 1/Glu-B 3 loci for some gliadin and glutenin subunits, is important for wheat quality. Two additional regions located on chromosomes 6AL and 7BS, and four regions on 1AL, 3AS, 3BL and 5AL, were shown to have single-factor effects on sedimentation volume at P 〈 0.001 and P 〈 0.01, respectively. Positive effects were contributed by both parents. A multiple linear regression model consisting of seven significant loci on different chromosomes explained 62–91% of the genotypic variation of the trait. The availability of linked markers to QTLs may facilitate the genetic dissection of quantitative traits and the early selection in wheat breeding programmes.

    Notes: Interspecific hybrids and amphiploids between Aegilops caudata L. (2n = 2x = 14, CC) and Triticum turgidum (L.) Thell. conv. durum Desf M. K. (2n = 4x = 28, AABB) were produced. Such hybrids can be used to introduce desirable traits such as disease resistance into cultivated durum wheats. One of the durum parents was a ph I mutation of the cv. ‘Cappelli’ used for testing the possibility of direct introduction of alien variation into cultivated species. The amphiploids were obtained both through colchicine chromosome doubling and as natural non-reductional mciosis products.In both hybrids and amphiploids, meiotic pairing and fertility were studied. Hybrids showed varying degrees of pairing and, in addition to the one involving the ph 1 mutant, one high pairing hybrid was found (Ae. caudata× cv. ‘Capinera’). Cytological examination of microsporogenesis in amphiploids revealed a high frequency of bivalent formation. Fertility proved to be a very variable character since some of the amphiploids were almost completely sterile. The use of amphiploids in breeding programmes is discussed in relation to meiotic and fertility data.
