    Notes: Abstract A priority task for correct environmental planningis to evaluate Natural Hazards, especially inhighly populated areas. In particular, thoroughinvestigations based on different Earth Sciencetechniques must be addressed for the Seismic HazardAssessment (SHA) in tectonically active areas. Notonly the management but also the multidisciplinaryanalysis of all the SHA-related data sets is bestperformed using a Geographic Information System. In this paper we show how a research-oriented GIS isbuilt and used in a practical case. The GeochemicalGeographic Information System (G2IS) wasdeveloped and applied to the Gargano promontory(southern Italy) in the framework of an EC researchproject, the Geochemical Seismic Zonation (GSZ)Project. This multidisciplinary – multiscalingpowerful tool is described in its structure, updatingprocedures and manipulation techniques. Preliminaryresults are presented on the detection of geochemically active fault zones and theircorrelation with remote sensing data and otherevidences of seismogenic structures.

    Notes: The surface composition of deoxidized high phosphorus (DHP) copper sheets was investigated by ESCA with the aim of verifying the role of phosphorus in oxide formation. While no surface segregation of phosphorus was observed on samples cleaned by ion bombardment and annealing in ultrahigh vacuum, the presence of large amounts of phosphorus was found after the formation of the oxide by exposure to 0.1 Torr oxygen at 770 K. The surface enrichment in P with the same binding energy was found after annealing a sheet of DHP copper coated with a layer of Cu2O deposited by sputtering. The binding energy of the P 2p peak as well as the analysis of the components of O 1s can be interpreted with the formation of a metaphosphate. Experiments performed at intermediate temperatures showed that the segregation of phosphorus is appreciable above 600 K and appears to be related to oxygen diffusion into the bulk.

    Notes: The water-soluble probe carboxyfluorescein (CF), contained in the internal aqueous phase of liposomes, was used to investigate the interaction of phospholipid vesicles with isolated nuclei. Ultrastructural analysis indicated that adherent liposomes coated the nuclear surface, and fluorescence microscopy showed that they contained quenching concentrations of the dye. Flow cytometry revealed that the transfer of the entrapped dye from the adhering liposomes to nuclei was blocked by chilling at 0°C. Chase experiments demonstrated that the most reliable mechanism of dye transfer involved fusion phenomena between the liposomal and the nuclear membranes. After the release of the fluorophore into the nucleus, empty liposomes could withdraw the intranuclear soluble fraction of the dye.

    Notes: Nuclei isolated from rat liver, incubated in the presence of liposomes of different phospholipids, undergo typical modifications: chromatin dispersion and reduction of the interchromatin granules in nuclei incubated with negatively charged liposomes and increase of the chromatin density and of the number and size of the interchromatin granules in nuclei incubated with neutral liposomes. The possibility that the observed modifications are caused by an impairment of the transport and translocation of ribonucleoproteins belonging to the inner nuclear matrix, is suggested by the results obtained by radiotracer techniques on the release of RNA from liposome-incubated nuclei.

    Notes: The incorporation of 32Pi into phospholipids was studied in Friend erythroleukemia cells either induced or not to erythroid differentiation with 4 mM hexamethylenebisacetamide (HMBA). The effect of the differentiating agent on the recovery of radiolabelled phospholipids was compared in whole cells, isolated nuclei and nuclear matrix after in vivo labelling for 1 hr. The procedure employed for the isolation of nuclei was demonstrated to allow only negligible lipid redistribution caused by cell manipulations. Among the lipids extractable from nuclei, acidic phospholipids, and particularly polyphosphoinositides, were more represented than in whole cells, while small differences were found in the other phospholipid classes examined. The comparison between the uninduced and induced condition showed that the relative amounts of nuclear inositol lipids were modified by HMBA treatment of the cells, with a decreased recovery of phosphatidylinositol 4,5 bisphosphate.These results indicate that phosphatidylinositol and its phosphorylation products synthesized in vivo show a different metabolism in nuclei and whole cells. They appear to be tightly bound nuclear components, also present in membrane-deprived nuclei and nuclear matrix, and are probably related to the nuclear events involved in erythroid differentiation.

    Description: The Neogene–Quaternary Albegna basin (southern Tuscany, central Italy), located to the south of the active geothermal field of Monte Amiata, hosts fossil and active thermogene travertine deposits, which are used in this study to reconstruct the spatio-temporal evolution of the feeding hydrothermal system. Travertine deposition is controlled by regional tectonics that operated through distributed N-S– and approximately E-W–striking transtensional fault arrays. The geochronological data set ( 230 Th/ 234 U, uranium-series disequilibrium) indicates a general rejuvenation (from 〉350 to 〈40 ka) of the travertine deposits moving from north to south and from higher to lower elevations. Negative 13 C and positive 18 O trends with younger deposition ages and lower depositional elevations provide evidence for a change in space and time of the hydrothermal fluid supply, suggesting a progressive dilution of the endogenic fluid sources by increasing meteoric water inputs. Comparison with paleoclimate records suggests increased travertine deposition during humid interglacial periods characterized by highstands of the water table. Travertine deposits of the Albegna basin record the interactions and feedbacks among tectonics, hydrothermalism, and paleoclimate within a region of positive geothermal anomaly during the Quaternary. Our study also sheds light on the neotectonic evolution of the Tyrrhenian margin of central Italy, where hydrothermalism has been distributed along margin-transverse structures during the Pleistocene and Holocene. It is hypothesized that originally upper-crustal, margin-transverse faults have evolved to through-going crustal features during the Quaternary, providing structurally controlled pathways for hydrothermal fluids. We suggest that this was the consequence of a change in the relative magnitude of the principal stress vectors along the Tyrrhenian margin that occurred under a regional stress field dominated by a continuous extensional regime.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Asbestos nucleation and concentration in rocks are mostly associated with mechanisms of fibre formation, combined with the water-dependent mineralogical alteration produced during serpentinisation of ultramafic masses. Very little is known about the structural settings and tectonic histories that influence and control asbestos occurrence in non-serpentinised rocks, which are diffusely embedded within tectonised ophiolitic suites. Focussing on a case history provided by a tectonised metagabbro from the Ligurian Alps (northern Italy), a multiscale structural-petrographical approach is used to investigate the relationships between rock fabric and fibrous amphibole growth within the metagabbro. Meso- to micro-structural observations are used to document the role of structurally controlled fluid-rock interactions in localising the fibrous amphibole growth during ductile-to-brittle shearing (mylonitic foliation to shear veins). A qualitative structural scenario is here provided for illustrating the growth of asbestos amphiboles in shear veins during the progression of shear deformation towards semi-brittle rheological conditions. The mechanisms of structurally controlled growth of fibrous amphibole in non-serpentinised rocks imply an examination of the tectonic boundary conditions that are at the origin of the asbestos concentration in ophiolitic rocks involved in orogenic belt construction.〈/span〉

    Description: The main issue addressed in this work is the process leading to fluid subsurface entrapment and pressure increase up to hydrofracturing and, possibly, to paroxysm in a hydrothermal setting, in order to envisage such processes and mitigate their effects in the volcanically active study area and elsewhere. A field and laboratory multidisciplinary approach is used in the fossil (late Pleistocene) portion of an active hydrothermal system (Colli Albani volcano, Rome, Italy). In this area, sulfate and sulfide mineralizations and strongly altered ignimbrites are exposed. The alteration acme occurs on top of a buried normal fault, where abundant degassing is still active, and fades away in 2–3 km. Based on pervasive versus discrete alteration styles, mineral assemblages, and further evidence, proximal and distal alteration domains are recognized. Both domains underwent steam-heated advanced argillic alteration with likely temperatures up to ~400 °C in the proximal domain and less than 150 °C in the distal domain. The process of hydrothermal alteration progressively and severely depleted many elements from the most permeable rock units, whereas the lowest-permeable unit (Tufo Lionato) underwent fracture and porosity healing accompanied by both mass and volume gain. In the proximal domain, the advanced argillic hydrothermal alteration eventually formed a substantial barrier to fluids. The hydrothermal fluids accumulated in and below this barrier, which was then suddenly hydrofractured when heat-driven hydraulic pressure overcame the effective stress, thus possibly leading to hydrothermal paroxysm. The decompression associated with hydrofracturing enhanced gas exsolution and mineral precipitation from the entrapped overpressured fluids. Mineral precipitation contributed, in turn, to fracture healing and to reinitiation of a new cycle of hydrothermal fluid entrapment. The key preconditions for the occurrence of the inferred processes are the contrasting compositions of K-alkaline host rocks and acidic alteration fluids, as also previously documented in other similar settings elsewhere.

    Description: Fissure ridge travertines grown from geothermal springs of Denizli Basin, southwestern Turkey, are investigated through stratigraphic, structural, geochemical, and geochronological methods, with the aim of understanding the growth of these elongate mound-shaped structures. Two main types of travertine deposits are recognized: (1) bedded travertines, which grew as flowstone on sloping surfaces and form the bulk of fissure ridges, and (2) banded travertines, which grew as veins within the bedded travertine chiefly along its central feeding conduit. Stratigraphic and structural observations shed light on the bedded-banded travertine relationships, where the banded features grew through successive accretion phases, crosscutting the bedded travertine or forming sill-like structures. The bedded and banded travertines alternated their growth, as demonstrated by complicated crosscutting relationships and by the upward suture, in places, of banded travertine by bedded travertine that was, in turn, crosscut by younger banded travertine. The bedded travertine is often tilted away from the central axis of the fissure ridge, thus leaving more room for the central banded travertine to form. U-series ages confirm the bedded-banded travertine temporal relationships and show that the growth of the studied fissure ridges lasted up to several tens of thousands of years during Quaternary time. The banded travertine was deposited mainly during cold events, possibly in coincidence with seismic events that might have triggered the outflow of deep geothermal fluids. C and O stable isotope and rare earth element data indicate a shallow feeding circuit for the studied structures with a fluid component deriving from a deeper geothermal circuit. A crack-and-seal mechanism of fissure ridge growth is proposed, modulated by the interplay of local and regional influencing factors and mechanisms such as geothermal fluid discharge, paleoclimate, tectonics, and the progressive tilting of bedded travertine limbs over a soft substratum creating the necessary space for the central veins to grow.
