    Notes: The exchange of CH4 between tropical forests and the atmosphere was determined by simultaneously measuring the net CH4 flux at the soil surface and assessing the flux contribution from soil-feeding termite biomass, both within the soil profile and in mounds. In Cameroon the flux of CH4 ranged from a net emission of 40.7 ng m–2 s–1 to a net CH4 oxidation of –53.0 ng m–2 s–1. Soil-inhabiting termite biomass was significantly correlated with CH4 flux. Termite mounds emitted up to 2000 ng s–1 mound–1. Termite-derived CH4 emission reduced the soil sink strength by up to 28%. Disturbance also had a strong effect on the soil sink strength, with the average rate of CH4 oxidation, at – 17.5 ng m–2 s–1, being significantly smaller (≈ 36%) at the secondary forest site than the –27.2 ng m–2 s–1, observed at the primary forest site. CH4 budgets calculated for each site indicated that both forests were net sinks for CH4 at – 6.1 kg ha–1 y–1 in the near-primary forest and – 3.1 kg ha–1 y–1 in the secondary forest.In Borneo, three forest sites representing a disturbance gradient were examined. CH4 oxidation rates ranged from 0 to – 32.1 ng m–2s–1 and a significant correlation between the net flux and termite biomass was observed only in an undisturbed primary forest, although the biomass was insufficient to cause net emission of CH4. Rates of CH4 oxidation were not significantly different across the disturbance gradient but were, however, larger in the primary forest (averaging – 15.4 ng m–2 s–1) than in an old-growth secondary forest (–13.9 ng m–2s–1) and a young secondary re-growth (– 10.8 ng m–2s–1). CH4 flux from termite mounds ranged from net oxidation in an abandoned mound to a maximum emission of 468 ng s–1 mound–1. CH4 budgets calculated for each site indicated that CH4 flux from termite mounds had an insignificant effect on the budget of CH4 at the regional scale at all three forest sites. Annual oxidation rates were – 4.8, – 4.2 and – 3.4 kg ha–1 y–1 in the primary, secondary and young secondary forests, respectively.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Chez un certain nombre d'insectes, la dilution de la ration avec une matière non-nutritive, qui n'est ni stimulateur puissant ni inhibiteur de l'alimentation, augmente la consommation totale. On a étudié la régulation à long terme de l'absorption des hydrates de carbone chezPeriplaneta americana en utilisant des rations artificielles avec des proportions constantes d'ingrédients azotés mais des rapports cellulose sur dextrine croissants. L'absorption réelle de dextrine pendant une période de 18 semaines était directement proportionnelle à la teneur de la ration en dextrine mais le volume de ration consommé augmentait au fur et à mesure que la dextrine était diluée. On émet l'hypothèse que la qualité de la ration alimentaire pourrait déterminer le degré de remplissage et de vidage du jabot au cours de cycles successifs.
    Notes: Abstract Studies using artificial diets were used to show that the insects can compensate to some extent for dietary dilution with cellulose, by ingesting larger volumes. This is discussed in relation to crop emptying.

    Notes: Summary The gnawing activity of adult female cockroaches was assessed by the dry weight loss of cotton fibre supplied to individual insects. In animals maintained on a carbohydrate-deficient diet the use of fibre was significantly less than in animals receiving a balanced diet. A comparison with controls showed that under both dietary regimes access to a fibre source did not significantly increase the mean, total number of oothecae produced.

    Notes: Summary The pH of the gut contents was measured in 52 species of higher termites (Termitidae), representing 36 genera in all four subfamilies. A statistically significant trend was shown from lower termites with low mean gut pH through to the Termitinae with higher mean gut pHs. Elevation of the pH occurred principally in the first and third proctodaeal segments, reaching values as high as 10.5 in 8 soil-feeding genera and 1 wood-feeding genus of Termitinae. Elevation of gut pH within the Termitidae appears to be independent of the general nature of the feeding substrate.

    Notes: Abstract The posterior colon of worker-caste termites accommdates an abundant, heterogeneous population of procaryotic organisms which are retained by attachment to prominent cuticular spines elaborated from the gut wall. The spines extend to nearly one half the diameter of the lumen and are each supported by a specialized root cell in which bundles of parallel microtubules traverse the cytoplasm from the apical to the basal surfaces. Additional epithelial cells are present which show infoldings of the apical plasma membrane and are overlain by cuticle containing deep, vase-shaped pits opening to the gut lumen. It is proposed that the root cells are designed to resist shearing forces transmitted to the base of each spine during contractions of the gut. The cuticular pits may represent sites of permeability to the end products of microbial metabolism.

    Notes: Theoretically, there are three principal ways in which ecosystem processes might respond to reductions in species richness. These theories are reviewed, and then considered in the context of a study of the diversity of soil nematodes and termites in near-primary forest sites at Mbalmayo, Cameroon, and the contribution made by these two taxa to carbon fluxes (CO2 and CH4) from the forest floor. Nematode abundances average 2.04 × 106 m-2, and termites between 2933 and 6957 m-2. The site is the most species-rich yet investigated for both groups anywhere in the world, so that a very large number of species contribute to carbon fluxes. We speculate about how much ‘redundancy’ might be built into the functioning of both assemblages, and point out the enormous difficulties of resolving such questions, and of producing such detailed species-inventories.

    Notes: Summary Mature columnar cells of the midgut of Cubitermes contain a prominent secretion product observed at light- and electron-microscopic levels. At the ultrastructural level the product is resolved as an electron dense material contained in vesicles up to 1 μm diameter that accumulate in the apical cytoplasm. The vesicles are composite, apparently formed by coalescence of at least two types of precursor vesicle both of which originate from the Golgi apparatus. Discharge of the product takes place by exocytosis into intercellular space at or in the vicinity of the apical septate junction complex. Augmentation of apical surface area by microvilli is less prominent in Cubitermes than in other termites for which data are available. This and other evidence suggests that absorptive functions are reduced in the midgut of this insect.
