Notes: Extraction of lipids from whole peanut kernels can be accomplished much faster in an automatic solvent extractor with a lower solvent: seed ratio than by immersion or in a Soxhlet extractor. A possible explanation of the function of moisture in the extraction of lipids from the whole peanut kernels has been put forward. This mode of extraction is expected to produce economically fat-lean kernels, while oil is obtained as a co-product.

Notes: Abstract Free convection in a conducting liquid past an infinite porous vertical flat plate in a rotating frame of reference when the Hall current is present is considered. Exact solutions for the velocity and temperature fields have been derived. The effects ofM (Hartmann number),m (Hall parameter), andE (Ekman number) on the velocity field are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The flow of an electrically conducting incompressible rarefied gas due to the combined buoyancy effects of thermal and mass diffusion past an infinite vertical porous plate with constant suction has been studied in the presence of uniform transverse magnetic field. The problem has been solved for velocity, temperature, and concentration fields. It has been observed that mean velocity and the mean temperature are affected by the Grashof numbersG 1 andG 2, the slip parameterh 1, temperature jump coefficienth 2, concentration jump coefficienth 3 and magnetic field parameterM. The amplitude and the phase of skin-friction and the rate of heat transfer are affected by frequency in addition to the above parameters. They are shown graphically. The numerical values of the mean skin-friction and the mean rate of heat transfer are also tabulated.

Notes: Summary Cellobiase enzyme was partially purified from the culture filtrate of Aspergillus niger AS-101 and the general and kinetic properties of the enzyme were examined. The enzyme was unstable on storage. However, it was protected by the addition of BSA, glycerol or sodium azide. Addition of glycerol also protected the enzyme from denaturation due to freezing and thawing. Effect of thiol group reagents revealed the presence of — SH groups at the active site of the enzyme. Different modulators such as metal ions and macroionic compounds illustrated varying effects on the purified cellobiase.

Notes: Abstract  The rainbow schlieren deflectometry technique was used to measure oxygen concentrations in a laminar, isothermal helium jet discharged vertically into ambient air. The concentration distributions were inferred from the color schlieren image by taking into consideration the sampling interval and noise in measurements, especially near the jet center. Excellent quantitative agreement was reached between measurements from schlieren and a continuous sampling probe. This work demonstrates the capability of the schlieren technique for providing accurate, spatially-resolved, nonintrusive, full-field of view measurements of species concentration in an isothermal binary system. Because the basic quantity measured is the refractive index, the present schlieren technique can be extended for quantitative measurements of other scalar flow properties related to the refractive index.

Notes: Abstract The effects of MHD free convection and mass transfer are taken into account on the flow past a vibrating infinite isothermal and constant heat flux vertical circular cylinder. The expressions for velocity, temperature, concentration and skin-friction of the fluid are obtained in closed form by using Laplace transform technique. The effects ofPr (Prandtl number),Sc (Schmidt number),Gr (Grashof number,Gr〉0 implies cooling andGr〈0 heating of the cylinder),Gm (modified Grashof number),M (magnetic field parameter) and variation of time on velocity distribution have been studied graphically. The results presented in this paper agree with the results of Lien and Chen when magnetic parameter approaches zero.

Notes: Abstract The Hall effect on the unsteady hydromagnetic free-convection resulting from the combined effects of thermal and mass diffusion of an electrical-conducting liquid through a porous medium past an infinite vertical porous plate in a rotating system have been analysed. The expressions for the mean velocity, mean skin friction, and mean rate of heat transfer on the plate are derived. The effects of magnetic parameterM, Hall parameterm, Ekman numberE, and permeability parameterK * on the flow field are discussed with the help of graphs and tables.

Notes: Summary Six Certified Reference Materials of toxic elements in the concentration range of 1–2 ppm have been prepared in aqueous or HNO3 solution with the participation of fourteen laboratories in India. Various factors affecting the stability of such solutions (hydrolysis, leaching from containers, adsorption, temperature etc.) have been studied and the analytical data for these reference materials have been compiled and certified values have been assigned to them.
