    Description: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Infrared Telescope Facility was used to investigate the collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter from 12 July to 7 August 1994. Strong thermal infrared emission lasting several minutes was observed after the impacts of fragments C, G, and R. All impacts warmed the stratosphere and some the troposphere up to several degrees. The abundance of stratospheric ammonia increased by more than 50 times. Impact-related particles extended up to a level where the atmospheric pressure measured several millibars. The north polar near-infrared aurora brightened by nearly a factor of 5 a week after the impacts.

    Description: After many years of development, solar electric propulsion is now a practical low cost alternative for many planetary missions. In response to the recent Discovery AO, we and a number of colleagues have examined the scientific return from a missioon to map the Moon and then rendezvous with a small body. In planning this mission, we found that solar electric propulsion was quite affordable under the Discovery guidelines, that many targets could be reached more rapidly with solar electric propulsion than chemical propulsion, that a large number of planetary bodies were accessible with modest propulsion systems, and that such missions were quite adaptable, with generous launch windows which minimized mission risks. Moreover, solar electric propulsion is ideally suited for large payloads requiring a large amount of power.

    Description: Ultraviolet (UV) spectra of comet P/Hartley 2 (1991 XV) taken with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in 1991 September reveal several bands of the Cameron system of CO (a 3 Pi-X 1 Sigma). These band are most likely due to 'prompt' emission from CO2 and, thus, provide a direct tracer of the CO2 abundance in the nucleus. Photodissociative excitation of CO2 is probably the largest contributor to the Cameron band emission, but significant contributions from electron impact excitation of CO, electron impact dissociation of CO2, and dissociative recombination of CO2(+), are also possible. Using our estimate that photodissociative excitation is responsible for approximately 60% of the total excitation of the Cameron system, we derive Q(sub CO2) approximately 2.6 x 10(exp 27) molecules/s, which implies CO2/H20 approximately 4%. If all of the Cameron band emission is due to photodissociative excitation, then CO2/H2O = 7 +/- 2%. For the largest possible contributions from the other excitation mechanisms considered, the CO2 abundance could be as a small as aproximately 2-3%. We did not detect CO Fourth Positive Group emission in our data and derive an upper limit of CO/H2O less than or equal to 1% (3 sigma) for CO coming directly from the nucleus. Comparison of the relative CO2 and CO abundances in P/Hartley 2 to those in P/Halley (CO2/H2O approximately 3%-4%, CO/H20 approximately 4% for the nucleus source) indicates that selective devolatilization of the nucleus may have occurred for P/Hartley 2. A relatively large CO2/CO ratio (i.e., approximately greater than 1) seems to be a common property of cometary nuclei. Since gas phase chemistry, in either the solar nebula or the interstellar medium (ISM), appears incapable of producing large relative CO2 abundances, the CO2 in cometary nuclei is probably produced either by UV and/or cosmic ray irradiation of ISM grains prior to the formation of the Solar System, or by condensation fractionation in the solar nebula.

    Description: The nucleus of comet Tempel 1 has been investigated at close range during two spacecraft missions separated by one comet orbit of the Sun, 5 1/2 years. The combined imaging covers 70% of the surface of this object which has a mean radius of 2.83 +/- 0.1 km. The surface can be divided into two terrain types: rough, pitted terrain and smoother regions of varying local topography. The rough surface has round depressions from resolution limits (10 m/pixel) up to 1 km across, spanning forms from crisp steep-walled pits, to subtle albedo rings, to topographic rings, with all ranges of morphologic gradation. Three gravitationally low regions of the comet have smoother terrain, parts of which appear to be deposits from minimally modified flows, with other parts likely to be heavily eroded portions of multiple layer piles. Changes observed between the two missions are primarily due to backwasting of scarps bounding one of these probable flow deposits. This style of erosion is also suggested by remnant mesa forms in other areas of smoother terrain. The two distinct terrains suggest either an evolutionary change in processes, topographically- controlled processes, or a continuing interaction of erosion and deposition.

    Description: We present observational data for Comet 9P/Tempel 1 taken from 1997 through 2010 in an international collaboration in support of the Deep Impact and Stardust-NExT missions. The data were obtained to characterize the nucleus prior to the Deep Impact 2005 encounter, and to enable us to understand the rotation state in order to make a time of arrival adjustment in February 2010 that would allow us to image at least 25% of the nucleus seen by the Deep Impact spacecraft to better than 80 m/pixel, and to image the crater made during the encounter, if possible. In total, approx.500 whole or partial nights were allocated to this project at 14 observatories worldwide, utilizing 25 telescopes. Seventy percent of these nights yielded useful data. The data were used to determine the linear phase coefficient for the comet in the R-band to be 0.045 +/- 0.001 mag/deg from 1deg to 16deg. Cometary activity was observed to begin inbound near r approx. 4.0 AU and the activity ended near r approx. 4.6 AU as seen from the heliocentric secular light curves, water-sublimation models and from dust dynamical modeling. The light curve exhibits a significant pre- and post-perihelion brightness and activity asymmetry. There was a secular decrease in activity between the 2000 and 2005 perihelion passages of approx. 20%. The post-perihelion light curve cannot be easily explained by a simple decrease in solar insolation or observing geometry. CN emission was detected in the comet at 2.43 AU pre-perihelion, and by r = 2.24 AU emission from C2 and C3 were evident. In December 2004 the production rate of CN increased from 1.8 x 10(exp 23) mol/s to Q(sub CN) = 2.75 x 10(exp 23) mol/s in early January 2005 and 9.3 x 10(exp 24) mol/s on June 6, 2005 at r = 1.53 AU.

    Description: A visible lightcurve of Comet Levy obtained with the IUE Fine Error Sensor has revealed short-term coma variability. A production-rate source function is derivable from these data which implies a nucleus exhibiting hemispherically asymmetric activity. The ratio of gas-to-dust-production rates is also noted to exhibit asymmetry. The low dust-outflow velocity derived from observations, at about 200 m/sec, indicates a distribution that is rich in large, 3-10 micron particles.

    Description: HST observations of Comet Levy at geocentric and heliocentric distances of about 1 AU show a highly asymmetrical coma in which the sunward-facing hemisphere is brighter than the tailward one by a factor of 2; this is in keeping with dayside volatile sublimation. Radial brightness profiles perpendicular to the sun-comet line are found to be highly symmetric about the nucleus. Detailed image analysis reveals indications of a hemispherical dust arc which propagates through the coma at an average projected velocity of about 0.16 km/sec. It is suggested that periodic occurrences of such dust arcs could account for the temporal variability in IUE continuum photometry.

    Description: IUE observations of Comet Wilson from September 1986 to November 1987, through perihelion, allow a comparison to be conducted between this 'new' comet and the highly evolved P/Halley, at comparable heliocentric distances. The temporal decreases of both OH and dust in Comet Wilson near perihelion were monotonic and slow, by contrast to Comet Halley's rapid fluctuations. Despite these differences, relative gas abundances were similar within a factor of about 2 for comparable heliocentric and geocentric distances; this indicates that P/Halley's in situ gas measurements may be typical of comets generally.

    Description: The impacts of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 left spots on Jupiter with diameters on the order of tens of thousands of kilometers, which have the appearance of debris fields strewn upon the Jovian cloud tops. In this note we employ a measurement of the optical depth of the debris at the impact site of fragment G to estimate mass in the debris field and lower limits to the G fragment mass of 4 x 10(exp12) - 4 x 10(exp 13) g and diameter of 0.1 - 0.3 km.

    Description: The Triple F (Fresh From the Fridge) mission, a Comet Nucleus Sample Return, has been proposed to ESA's Cosmic Vision program. A sample return from a comet enables us to reach the ultimate goal of cometary research. Since comets are the least processed bodies in the solar system, the proposal goes far beyond cometary science topics (like the explanation of cometary activity) and delivers invaluable information about the formation of the solar system and the interstellar molecular cloud from which it formed. The proposed mission would extract three sample cores of the upper 50 cm from three locations on a cometary nucleus and return them cooled to Earth for analysis in the laboratory. The simple mission concept with a touch-andgo sampling by a single spacecraft was proposed as an M-class mission in collaboration with the Russian space agency ROSCOSMOS.
