    Beschreibung: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred under Lake Taupo in New Zealand at 11:47pm (local time) on the 30〈sup〉th〈/sup〉 November 2022. Subsequent to this earthquake evidence of tsunami waves was discovered around the lake shore, and also recorded on three water-level gauges. Surveys were made to record inundation heights and extents around the lake. Interpretation of the collected data suggests that there were at least two tsunami sources: 1) a largely sub-lacustrine landslide occurring in Wharewaka Bay near Taupo township, and 2) a tsunami generated by movement of the lake bed associated with the earthquake. The observed impacts of the landslide-caused tsunami appear to mainly affect an area of the lake within a few hundred metres of the landslide source, while those generated by the co-seismic lake-bed movement are more widely distributed around the lake, particularly on the eastern side. Tsunami observations have been interpreted alongside seismic and geodetic data to better understand the source processes that generated the tsunami waves. Modelling and further work to quantify both tsunami sources are ongoing and latest results will be presented. We will describe the installation of new water-level instruments to better monitor lake water disturbances, e.g., caused by volcanic activities, and discuss the implications of this event for our understanding of the hazard and risk in the Taupo region.

    Beschreibung: Recent tsunamis demonstrate the urgent need for more densely spaced observations and direct measurements from the oceans. Most of the existing observing capacity is located on land or close to the shore, and often sparse (seismic network, land-based GNSS, tide-gauges and DART array), limiting our ability to predict, detect and respond to tsunamis. We propose a network of ships with GNSS systems as a way to fill this geodetic observation gap in the ocean by tracking changes in sea-surface height, and detecting even small, ~10 cm amplitude tsunamis of different origins. One year of navigation data from the commercial shipping fleet is used to generate statistical coverage maps of large ships for different epochs in the Pacific region which are overlapped with regions source of tsunamis and impacted by tsunamis. Some first results describe what a cargo-ship network might experience in terms of tsunami travel time and tsunami predicted amplitudes based on several tsunami models calculated over the Pacific. They clearly demonstrate that commercial shipping lines provide an excellent temporal and spatial coverage of the ocean globally. A focus on different regions indicates that the highest density of ships is near coastlines, and testing different tsunami origins helps understand more precisely how this network could improve regional early warning. By exploring the geographic relationship between tsunami sources, travel times and amplitudes with the ships locations, the discussion seeks to determine the ability of a defined ship network to provide effective warnings for the communities at risk and improve hazard mitigations.

    Beschreibung: Methane (CH4) mitigation from anthropogenic sources such as in the production and transport of fossil fuels has been found as one of the most promising strategies to curb global warming in the near future. Satellite-based imaging spectrometers have demonstrated to be well-suited to detect and quantify these emissions at high spatial resolution, which allows the attribution of plumes to sources. The PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) satellite mission (ASI, Italy) has been successfully used for this application, and the recently launched Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) mission (DLR/GFZ, Potsdam, Germany) presents similar spatial and spectral characteristics (30-m spatial resolution, 30-km swath, about 8-nm spectral sampling at 2300 nm). In this work, we investigate the potential and limitations of EnMAP for CH4 remote sensing, using PRISMA as a benchmark to deduce its added value. We analyze the spectral and radiometric performance of EnMAP in the 2300-nm region used for CH4 retrievals acquired using the matched-filter method. Our results show that in arid areas, EnMAP spectral resolution is about 2.7 nm finer and the signal-to-noise ratio values are approximately twice as large, which leads to an improvement in retrieval performance. Several EnMAP examples of plumes from different sources around the world with flux rate values ranging from 1 to 20 t/h are illustrated. We show plumes from sectors such as onshore oil and gas (O&G) and coal mining, but also from more challenging sectors such as landfills and offshore O&G. We detect two plumes in a close-to-sunglint configuration dataset with unprecedented flux rates of about 1 t/h, which suggests that the detection limit in offshore areas can be considerably lower under favorable conditions.

    Beschreibung: Glacier surface mass-balance measurements on Greenland started more than a century ago, but no compilation exists of the observations from the ablation area of the ice sheet and local glaciers. Such data could be used in the evaluation of modelled surface mass balance, or to document changes in glacier melt independently from model output. Here, we present a comprehensive database of Greenland glacier surface mass-balance observations from the ablation area of the ice sheet and local glaciers. The database spans the 123 a from 1892 to 2015, contains a total of ~3000 measurements from 46 sites, and is openly accessible through the PROMICE web portal (http://www.promice.dk). For each measurement we provide X, Y and Z coordinates, starting and ending dates as well as quality flags. We give sources for each entry and for all metadata. Two thirds of the data were collected from grey literature and unpublished archive documents. Roughly 60% of the measurements were performed by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS, previously GGU). The data cover all regions of Greenland except for the southernmost part of the east coast, but also emphasize the importance of long-term time series of which there are only two exceeding 20 a. We use the data to analyse uncertainties in point measurements of surface mass balance, as well as to estimate surface mass-balance profiles for most regions of Greenland.

    Beschreibung: Wetlands are valuable habitats that provide important social, economic, and ecological services such as flood control, water quality improvement, carbon sequestration, pollutant removal, and primary/secondary production export to terrestrial and aquatic food chains. There is disagreement about the need for mosquito control in wetlands and about the techniques utilized for mosquito abatement and their impacts upon wetlands ecosystems. Mosquito control in wetlands is a complex issue influenced by numerous factors, including many hard to quantify elements such as human perceptions, cultural predispositions, and political climate. In spite of considerable progress during the last decades, habitat protection and environmentally sound habitat management still remain inextricably tied to politics and economics. Furthermore, the connections are often complex, and occur at several levels, ranging from local businesses and politicians, to national governments and multinational institutions. Education is the key to lasting wetlands conservation. Integrated mosquito abatement strategies incorporate many approaches and practicable options, as described herein, and need to be well-defined, effective, and ecologically and economically sound for the wetland type and for the mosquito species of concern. The approach will certainly differ in response to disease outbreaks caused by mosquito-vectored pathogens versus quality of life issues caused by nuisance-biting mosquitoes. In this contribution, we provide an overview of the ecological setting and context for mosquito control in wetlands, present pertinent information on wetlands mosquitoes, review the mosquito abatement options available for current wetlands managers and mosquito control professionals, and outline some necessary considerations when devising mosquito control strategies. Although the emphasis is on North American wetlands, most of the material is applicable to wetlands everywhere.
