Notes: Abstract Cancer was an obvious disease to study by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS); it produces large lesions that give clearly abnormal spectra, all treatment methods leave much to be desired, and radiotherapy, in particular, is limited by tissue hypoxia, a process that can be investigated by MRS.31P MRS has shown that tumor cells are not acidic, as had been thought; instead, the pH gradient across the tumor cell membrane is the reverse of that in a normal cell. This change in hydrogen-ion gradient is accompanied by changes in gradients of many other ions. Tumor oxygenation can be monitored in animal tumor models using the techniques employed for functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Large changes in signal are observed when drugs that reduce tumor blood flow are administered. 1H NMR spectra of acid extracts of tumor or normal tissue biopsies contain sufficient information to permit classification (and thus, perhaps, diagnosis) if computer-based pattern recognition techniques are employed. Surprisingly, the same technique gives quite good classification of31P spectra takenin vivo. Can MRS beappliedin cancer therapy? Studies on tumor ion balance will help in the design of anticancer drugs and other therapies. Tumor blood flow studies using MRI could be applied to individual patients to predict the usefulness of radiotherapy and to assist in radiotherapy planning. Pattern recognition methods could automate the screening of biopsies and could also assist in interpretation of human spectra takenin vivo.

Notes: Abstract Tensile tests have been made on the draglines of the Queensland Bird-Catching Spider (Nephila maculata): the masses of the several spiders varied by a factor of about 25. The nominal fracture strength of the silk was independent of the spider size and was about 1100 MPa (the true fracture strength was about 1500 MPa). Larger spiders extruded proportionately thicker draglines and the maximum force which a dragline could sustain was generally two or three times the body weight of the spider. Draglines consisted of two or four individual threads and some tests were made of the properties of these constituent strands. Tests made on draglines aged for 21 days showed only a moderate deterioration in properties although a marked change occurred in the initial part of the stress-strain curve.

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to evaluate failure theories for a glass fabric reinforced polyester resin over 370 tests have been conducted on thin-walled tubes under combined axial loading and internal pressure, both for static and fatigue loading. For plane stress the results are considered in relation to imaginary failure surfaces inσ 1,σ 2,σ 6 space. A limited measure of agreement between theories and results can be obtained after highly subjective selection of data. Only those theories which involve complex stress properties provide a reasonable fit. The behaviour of tubular specimens is strongly influenced by the presence of joints in the reinforcements.

Notes: The results of three finite element stress analysis programs are compared for the problem of the elasto-plastic bending of a notched beam under plane strain conditions. Both Tresca and von Mises yield criteria are considered and the numerical results are compared with an available analytical solution based on slip-line field theory. The general conclusion is drawn that finite element methods can be used with confidence in elasto-plastic stress analysis.

    Notes: In any mesh, rules exist that interrelate the number of internal and external sides, vertices, etc. and the total number of elements. These are given explicitly for plane meshes of triangles and quadrilaterals, and for solid meshes of tetrahedra and cuboidal elements. The method is quite general and discovers all such independent rules that exist. Thus, for a plane mesh of T elements having Vi internal and Vb boundary vertices and Si internal and Sb boundary sides, then \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$\begin{array}{l} T = \frac{1}{3}\left({S_b + 2S_i} \right) = V_b + 2V_i + 2H - 2\quad{\rm (for\,triangular\,elements)}\\ T = \frac{1}{4}\left({S_b + 2S_i} \right) = \frac{1}{2}\left({V_b + 2V_i} \right) + H - 1\quad{\rm (for\,quadrilateral\,elements)} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} where H is the number of internal boundaries (holes) there might be. For solid meshes, these two-dimensional equations relating elements to sides generalize to \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{l} T = \frac{1}{6}\left({F_b + 2Fi} \right){\rm\quad (for\,cuboid\,elements)} \\ T = \frac{1}{4}\left({F_b + 2Fi} \right){\rm\quad (for\,tetrahedral\,elements)} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} where there are Fb boundary and Fi internal faces. Unfortunately, there is no direct generalization of the two-dimensional equations relating vertices and elements: it is only possible to do this by including the Ei internal and Eb boundary edges: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{l} T = \frac{1}{8}E_b + \frac{1}{2}\left({E_i - V_i + H - h - 1} \right){\rm\quad (for\,cuboid\,elements)} \\ T = \frac{1}{3}E_b + E_i - V_i + H - H - 1{\rm\quad (for\,tetrahedral\,elements)} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} where there are H through holes and h cavities.

Notes: Abstract A finite element stress analysis program has been used to find values of the stress intensity factor, K 1, for radial cracks at the boundary of a hole in a finite plate under tension. Several values of the plate width ratio were investigated and for large values of the plate width the results were compared to the infinite plate solution of Bowie [1]. Computations were also made for a spinning disc, both with a smooth bore and with a bore containing a keyway having a stress concentration factor of 3.7: the separate contributions to K 1 of the rotational stresses and of blade forces acting on the rim were measured and the results compared with the approximate methods suggested by Williams and Isherwood [2].
