Abstract This paper systematically deals with the following three problems: (1) Some numerical schemes in coupling FEM- and BEM: including condensation of the boundary integral equation, symmetrization of equivalent stiffness matrix and treatment of traction discontinuity, (2) Coupling of elastoplastic finite elements to elastic boundary elements, (3) Coupling of elasto-viscoplastic finite elements to elastic boundary elements and numerical stability condition.
