    Description: We present a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of a long ROSAT PSPC pointing centered on the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The spectrum is particularly complex, with a two-component model favored, confirming the existence of the soft excess in this source. In addition, an absorption feature arising from highly ionized oxygen in the line of sight has been detected, consistent with an origin in the 'warm absorber' which has been found to be a common feature in Seyfert galaxies observed by Ginga. The energy and depth of the feature should allow us to constrain the density and geometry of the absorbing gas, which may lie close to the central continuum source. NGC 5548 was in a low X-ray state during the observation, brightening by a factor of about 2 on a time-scale of about 2 d. Time-resolved spectral analysis shows a change in the ratio of the hard and soft fluxes, consistent with reprocessing models.

    Description: Some 32 quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) were identified to a flux limit of 2 x 10(exp -15) erg/sq cm in the deepest optically identified X-ray survey performed to date. This Rosat position sensitive proportional counter survey (PSPC) is spectroscopically 86 percent complete. The surface density of quasars at this flux limit is 210 +/- 37 per sq deg. The QSO X-ray luminosity function was measured at low luminosities and high redshifts, the highest of which was 3.4.

    Description: The Rosat Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) spectra of a sample of 35 X-ray selected Narrow Emission Line Galaxies (NELGs) are presented. Of these 35 objects, 16 are from the Rosat International X-ray Optical Survey (RIXOS) and the remaining 19 were discovered during the optical identification of Rosat U.K. deep survey sources. A power law model with low energy absorption set at the Galactic value is found to be a good fit for all sources. The results indicate that the spectral slope of NELGs is flatter than that of active galactic nuclei.

    Description: Observations of the X-ray-selected BL Lac H0414 + 009 with the VLA indicate a steep-spectrum radio tail extending about 40 arcsec from the core. Deep V, R, and I CCD images show this object to be located in a galaxy whose colors and surface brightness are fitted by an elliptical model. The BL Lac and the cluster of galaxies are physically associated, indicating that BL Lacs do not avoid the cluster environment but are found in groups and clusters as often as are normal radio galaxies; this supports the contention that BL Lacs are normal radio galaxies seen 'end on'.

    Description: Radio, mm, optical, UV and X-ray light curves of 3C 279 as well as the gamma-ray light curve available since 1991 June are considered. Strong flux correlations are found between the X-ray and the radio-optical region. Variations at 100 MeV are well correlated to the optical and X-ray bands. The variability amplitude, as measured by an average logarithmic dispersion of the available measurements is small in the radio and increases systematically with increasing frequency up to the gamma-ray band, with the possible exception of the X-ray amplitude.

    Description: An improved position is presented for the X-ray source H2252-033 using the Ariel V Sky Survey Instrument, and precise positioning using the Scanning Modulation Collimator on HEAO-1. The source is identified optically with a 13th magnitude emission-line object, which is probably a white dwarf binary with a well formed accretion disk, with similarities to the dwarf novae (e.g., SS Cyg) at minimum.

    Description: The X-ray source 4U 1849-31 is identified with the 13 mag star V1223 Sgr, on the basis of a precise HEAO 1 modulation collimator X-ray position uniquely selected by the Ariel-5 sky survey location. It is shown by optical spectroscopy and photometry that V1223 Sgr is a cataclysmic variable, displaying a photometric period of 13.2 min that is interpreted as being due to the rotation of a degenerate dwarf. The similarity of this system to H2252-035 is noted.

    Description: We present results for the X-ray-bright superluminal AGN PKS 1510-089 (z=0.36) monitored weekly with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer for the past four years in order to study the origin of X-ray emission from this extremely variable blazer. These RXTE data are compared with weekly cm-band flux and polarization observations from the Michigan Diameter telescope, to identify correlated activity and associated frequency-dependent time delays for constraining X-ray emission models; and bimonthly 7mm VLBA total and linearly polarized intensity imaging to identify temporal associations between X-ray events and the ejection of superluminal components and disturbances in the magnetic field, to test if the X-ray energy release is related to changes in the inner jet flow. Both the X-ray (2-20 keV) and radio flux are highly variable on timescales of weeks. The VLBA mas structure is dominated by a bright core with a weak jet; both the ejection of very fast superluminal knots and changes in the fractional polarization and EVPA of the core on timescales of one to four months are identified. Two outbursts in 1997 are well-resolved in both the centimeter and X-ray bands. Both the strong temporal association and the similar outburst shape support a causal relation, and a discrete cross-correlation analysis identifies that the X-ray lags the radio by 16 days during the bursts. Starting in 1998 the behavior changes: the correlation is weaker with the X-ray possibly leading the radio by six days. During the full time window there is a correlation between bands as expected if the radio photons are upscattered to X-ray energies. The time correlations and difference between the flat X-ray spectral index (0.0 〈= alpha 〈= 0.5 where F(sub v) is proportional to v(exp -alpha)), and the mm-wave synchrotron spectrum (alpha = 0.8) are discussed within the framework of viable SSC models.

    Description: We report on the results of a three-year program of coordinated X-ray and optical monitoring of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051. The principal results of this program are: (1) The H-beta emission line time lag and Doppler width yield a virial mass estimate of about 1.1 mission solar masses, at the extreme low end of AGN masses. A plausible adjustment for inclination effects increases this mass slightly to about 1.4 mission solar masses. (2) During the third year of this campaign, both the X-ray continuum and the He II 4686 line went into extremely low states, although the optical continuum and the H-beta broad line were both still present and variable. We suggest that the inner part of the accretion disk may have gone into an advection-dominated state, yielding little radiation from the hotter inner disk. (3) The He II 4686 line is almost five times as broad as H-beta, and it is strongly blueward asymmetric, as are the high-ionization UV lines recorded in archive spectra of NGC 4051. The data are consistent with the Balmer lines arising in a low-inclination disk-like configuration, and the high-ionization lines arising in an outflowing wind, of which we observe preferentially the near side.
