    Description: The underlying mean and variance properties of surface net radiation, sensible-latent heat fluxes and soil heat flux are studied over the densely instrumented grassland region encompassing FIFE. Flux variability is discussed together with the problem of scaling up to area-averaged fluxes. Results are compared and contrasted for cloudy and clear situations and examined for the influence of surface-induced biophysical controls (burn and grazing treatments) and topographic controls (aspect ratios and slope factors).

    Description: The authors discuss the feasibility of determining the surface flux of sensible heat from forests with surface temperatures measured by satellites together with temperature soundings in the unstable atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The latent heat flux is derived from the sensible heat flux by means of the energy budget. The study makes use of data collected during HAPEX-MOBILHY (Hydrologic Atmospheric Pilot Experiment-Modelization du Bilan Hydrique). The methodology is based on turbulence similarity for the unstable ABL. The surface temperature data were derived from measurements by the advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) aboard the NOAA-9 satellite; the atmospheric profiles were obtained by radiosondes.

    Description: A model for simulating polarized 37-GHz microwave emissions from vegetated surfaces is proposed. An equation expressing the radiative transfer is solved using a two-point Gauss quadrature method. Surface temperature, reflectance, normalized difference, and polarized brightness temperatures are obtained from processed multispectral satellite data. The model simulations are evaluated against satellite data collected between January 1982 and December 1983 along a transect going from rain forest to hot desert over Africa (0 deg to 20 deg N, 11 deg E). It is found that the temporal variation of the average brightness temperature matches closely the surface temperature. The seasonal variation of the polarization difference is confined within the latitude band of 8 deg to 18 deg N, but the normalized difference continues to show seasonal variation south of 8 deg N. The relations between the polarization difference and the normal difference and between the polarization difference and the reflectance are considered to be nonlinear and almost linear, respectively.

    Description: Monitoring spatial and temporal changes of soil moisture are of importance to hydrology, meteorology, and agriculture. This paper reports a result on study of using L-band SAR imagery to estimate soil moisture and surface roughness for bare fields. Due to limitations of the Small Perturbation Model, it is difficult to apply this model on estimation of soil moisture and surface roughness directly. In this study, we show a simplified model derived from the Integral Equation Model for estimation of soil moisture and surface roughness. We show a test of this model using JPL L-band AIRSAR data.

    Description: This study extends a previous investigation on estimating surface soil moisture using the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) over a grassland region. Although SSM/I is not optimal for soil moisture retrieval, it can under some conditions provide information. Rigorous analyses over land have been difficult due to the lack of good validation data sets. A scientific objective of the Southern Great Plains 1997 (SGP97) Hydrology Experiment was to investigate whether the retrieval algorithms for surface soil moisture developed at higher spatial resolution using truck-and aircraft-based passive microwave sensors can be extended to the coarser resolutions expected from satellite platform. With the data collected for the SGP97, the objective of this study is to compare the surface soil moisture estimated from the SSM/I data with those retrieved from the L-band Electronically Scanned Thinned Array Radiometer (ESTAR) data, the core sensor for the experiment, using the same retrieval algorithm. The results indicated that an error of estimate of 7.81% could be achieved with SSM/I data as contrasted to 2.82% with ESTAR data over three intensive sampling areas of different vegetation regimes. It confirms the results of previous study that SSM/I data can be used to retrieve surface soil moisture information at a regional scale under certain conditions.

    Description: The problem of time discontinuity (or jump condition) in the coalescence/dispersion (C/D) mixing model is addressed in probability density function (pdf). A C/D mixing model continuous in time is introduced. With the continuous mixing model, the process of chemical reaction can be fully coupled with mixing. In the case of homogeneous turbulence decay, the new model predicts a pdf very close to a Gaussian distribution, with finite higher moments also close to that of a Gaussian distribution. Results from the continuous mixing model are compared with both experimental data and numerical results from conventional C/D models. The effect of Coriolis forces on compressible homogeneous turbulence is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS). The numerical method used in this study is an eight order compact difference scheme. Contrary to the conclusions reached by previous DNS studies on incompressible isotropic turbulence, the present results show that the Coriolis force increases the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, and that anisotropy develops as the Coriolis force increases. The Taylor-Proudman theory does apply since the derivatives in the direction of the rotation axis vanishes rapidly. A closer analysis reveals that the dissipation rate of the incompressible component of the turbulent kinetic energy indeed decreases with a higher rotation rate, consistent with incompressible flow simulations (Bardina), while the dissipation rate of the compressible part increases; the net gain is positive. Inertial waves are observed in the simulation results.

    Description: Six SIR-C L-band measurements over the Little Washita River watershed in Chickasha, Oklahoma during 11-17 April 1994 have been analyzed for studying the change of soil moisture in the region. Two algorithms developed recently for estimation of moisture content in bare soil were applied to these measurements and the results were compared with those sampled on the ground. There is a good agreement between the values of soil moisture estimated by either one of the algorithms and those measured from ground sampling for bare or sparsely vegetated fields. The standard error from this comparison is on the order of 0.05-0.06 cu cm/cu cm, which is comparable to that expected from a regression between backscattering coefficients and measured soil moisture. Both algorithms provide a poor estimation of soil moisture or fail to give solutions to areas covered with moderate or dense vegetation. Even for bare soils the number of pixels that bear no numerical solution from the application of either one of the two algorithms to the data is not negligible. Results from using one of these algorithms indicate that the fraction of these pixels becomes larger as the bare soils become drier. The other algorithm generally gives a larger fraction of these pixels when the fields are vegetation-covered. The implication and impact of these features are discussed in this article.

    Description: Three spinel-rich, perovskite-bearing, pyroxene-rimmed, hibonite-free inclusions from the Murchison C2 chondrite have volatility controlled, modified group II REE patterns. Two have high Eu/Yb ratios, two have small positive Ce anomalies and one has high refractory siderophiles for a group II inclusion. Two additional spinel-rich inclusions have subchondritic Ce/La ratios and negative Eu and Yb anomalies, the Eu anomalies being larger than the Yb ones. One of these inclusions is enriched in La relative to all HREE and the other is enriched in HREE relative to all LREE except La, possibly suggesting the presence of an ultrarefractory component in the latter. One hibonite-rich inclusion has a group III REE pattern with a negative Ce anomaly. A calcium dialuminate-bearing inclusion known to have crystallized from a melt at 2100-1800K has a modified group II REE pattern, rather than a pattern which would be predicted from the evaporation expected from such a droplet, e.g., a group III or ultrarefractory pattern. Volatile element contents of these inclusions are among the lowest found in any refractory inclusions.

    Description: By freeze-thaw disaggregation, we have recovered a total of 47 refractory inclusions. New discoveries include the following: a hibonite-pyroxene spherule from Murray; a CaAl4O7-bearing spherule from Murchison; and a Sc-fassaite-bearing ultrarefractory inclusion from Murchison. Freeze-thaw disaggregation, combined with density separation and hand-picking as described is a proven method for recovering rare objects from carbonaceous chondrites. This method is especially effective on C2's due to their porosity and typically results in the discovery of new types of refractory inclusions. Because few refractory inclusions from Murray have been described, we studied this meteorite, although only a small amount of material (730 mg) was available for disaggregation. Many refractory inclusions from Murchison have been described, and we disaggregated a larger amount (approximately 18 g) of Murchison in an attempt to find new types of refractory inclusions, especially corundum-bearing ones.

The LB method tries to set up its model at molecular scale and simulate the flow at macroscopic scale. LBM has been applied to mostly incompressible flows and simple geometry.
