Description: Auxiliary data include one file with alkenone-derived UK'37 data and sea surface temperatures (SST). On these data Figs. 7 and 8 of the manuscript are based. The SST are derived from UK'37 by using the transfer function: SST = 29.876 UK'37 - 1.334 of Conte et al. (2006). The data are against the ages (in A.D.) of samples derived from cores GT91-1 (39[deg]59'23"N, 17[deg]45'25"E), GT89-3 and GT90-3 (both 39[deg]45'43"N, 17[deg]53'55"E ). Also included are composite records for UK'37 and SST. For creating the composite records, GT-89-3 was taken as reference core. In the overlapping period the GT89-3 data seem in general lower than the GT91-1 data. To accommodate for this in the composite record, the average difference (0.0343 UK'37 units; equivalent to 1.023 [deg]C) was subtracted from the GT91-1 record. Hereafter, for each depth in the overlapping interval the respective values (UK'37 or SST) of GT89-3 and GT91-1 were averaged. We have also averaged with 16 additional alkenone measurements, from 1793 to 1851, performed in the GT90-3 core.

Description: A number of C25 and C30 highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) sulphur compounds (E.G., thiolanes, 1-oxo-thiolanes, thiophenes, and benzo[b]thiophenes) with 2,6,10,14-tetramethyl-7-(3-methylpentyl)pentadecane and 2,6,10,14,18-pentamethyl-7-(3-methylpentyl)nonadecane carbon skeletons were identified in sediments, ranging from Holocene to Upper Cretaceous. These identifications are based on mass spectral characterisation, desulphurisation, and, in some cases, by comparison of mass spectral and relative retention time data with those of authentic standards. The presence of unsaturated C25 and C30 HBI thiolanes in a Recent sediment from the Black Sea (age 3-6 ka) strongly supports their formation during early diagenesis. The co-occurrence of HBI polyenes (C25 and C30) and unsaturated HBI thiolanes (C25 and C30) possessing two double bonds less than the corresponding HBI polyenes, in this Recent sediment, testifies to the formation of unsaturated HBI thiolanes by a reaction of inorganic sulphur species with double bonds of the HBI polyenes. Furthermore, a diagenetic scheme for HBI sulphur compounds is proposed based on the identification of HBI sulphur compounds in sediment samples with different maturity levels.

Description: Carotenoids were analysed in ca. 1-cm thick subsamples of three laterally time-equivalent sapropels from a west-east transect of the eastern Mediterranean Basin to study euxinic periods during Pliocene sapropel formation. The amount of intact isorenieratene (summed all-trans and cis isomers), ranged from non-detectable at the base and top of a sapropel up to 140 µg/g sediment in the central parts. Isorenieratene accumulation rates at the central and western site are remarkably similar and increase sharply to levels of up to 3.0 mg/m**2/ yr in the central part of the sapropel and then drop to low levels. This pattern indicates an expansion of euxinic conditions reaching into the photic zone, followed by deepening of the chemocline during deposition of this Pliocene sapropel. The sapropel from the easternmost site of the basin, which contains less organic carbon, shows much lower isorenieratene accumulation rates and even absence of isorenieratene in the central part of the sapropel. Ba/Al ratios indicate enhanced palaeoproductivity during sapropel formation, supporting previously proposed models, according to which increased productivity is the driving force for the generation of euxinic conditions.

Description: Free and 'bound' long-chain alkenones (C37:2 and C37:3) in oxidized and unoxidized sections of four organic matter-rich Pliocene and Miocene Madeira Abyssal Plain turbidites (one from Ocean Drilling Program site 951B and three from site 952A) were analyzed to determine the effect of severe post depositional oxidation on the value of Uk'37. The profiles of both alkenones across the redox boundary show a preferential degradation of the C37:3 compared to the C37:2 compound. Because of the high initial Uk'37 values and the way of calculating the Uk'37 this degradation hardly influences the Uk'37 profiles. However, for lower Uk'37 values, measured selective degradation would increase Uk'37 up to 0.17 units, equivalent to 5°C. For most of the Uk'37 band-width, much smaller degradation already increases Uk'37 beyond the analytical error (0.017 units). Consequently, for interpreting the Uk'37 record in terms of past sea surface temperatures, selective degradation needs serious consideration.

Description: Sapropels -organic-matter rich layers- are common in Neogene sediments of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The formation of these layers has been attributed to climate-related increases in organic-matter production (Calvert et al., 1992, doi:10.1038/359223a0; Rossignol-Strick et al., 1982, doi:10.1038/295105a0; Rohling, 1994, doi:10.1016/0025-3227(94)90202-X) and increased organic-matter preservation due to oxygen depletion in more stagnant bottom waters (Rossignol-Strick et al., 1982, doi:10.1038/295105a0; Rohling, 1994, doi:10.1016/0025-3227(94)90202-X). Here we report that eastern Mediterranean Pliocene sapropels (Emeis et al., 1996, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.160.102.1996) contain molecular fossils of a compound (isorenieratene) known to be synthesized by photosynthetic green sulphur bacteria, suggesting that sulphidic (euxinic) -and therefore anoxic- conditions prevailed in the photic zone of the water column. These sapropels also have a high trace-metal content, which is probably due to the efficient scavenging of these metals by precipitating sulphides in a euxinic water column. The abundance and sulphur-isotope composition of pyrite are consistent with iron sulphide formation in the water column. We conclude that basin-wide water-column euxinia occurred over substantial periods during Pliocene sapropel formation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and that the ultimate degradation of the increased organic-matter production was strongly influential in generating and sustaining the euxinic conditions.
