Description / Table of Contents: Zur Entwicklung von neuen Styrol-Butadien-Kautschuken (SBRs) für Reifenanwendungen sind mehrere Arten von Zinn-Polymer-Bindungen (Styryl-, Butadienyl-, Isoprenyl- and α-Methylstyryl-Zinn) sowohl in linearen als auch in verzweigten Ketten untersucht worden.
Notes: Following the development of new SBRs for tyre applications, several kinds of tin-polymer bonds (styryl-, butadienyl-, isoprenyl- and α-methylstyryltin) have been studied, in both branched and linear chains.Dynamic-mechanical properties of the carbon black vulcanizates have been analyzed to establish a relationship between structural parameters of polymers and compound properties. The filler-polymer interaction parameter, defined by a ratio of mechanical and dynamic terms, has been used for the evaluation of the compounds. The introduction of different types of tin-polymer bonds, in branched and linear chains of the SBRs, implies an improvement in the hysteresis properties of the vulcanizates as well as a modification of the interaction parameter.

Notes: The emulsion copolymerization kinetics of styrene-butyl acrylate was studied in a batch process. The effect of the initiator, emulsifier, chain transfer agent and monomer concentration on copolymerization rate and molecular weight distribution is discussed. Thermal and viscoelastic properties of copolymers were measured. It was found that the n-dodecylthiol introduced into the reactor with the monomers did not affect the copolymerization rate (no redox reaction with the initiator) but the molecular weight was strongly dependent upon its concentration. These two kinetic parameters increase with increasing the butyl acrylate concentration.

Notes: Styrene (S)-Methyl methacrylate (MMA) copolymers have been synthesized via batch and semicontinuous processes. The copolymers obtained in both processes were richer in styrene than the initial monomers composition. This fact is strongly influenced by the solubility of MMA in water. The experimental results also showed the existence of an inverse relationship between initiator concentration and molecular weight and consequently in the flow properties of the materials. Furthermore, the molecular weight and flow properties did not show an important dependence on emulsifier content. It was found that the rate of copolymerization was an inverse function of the electrolyte present in the reaction medium. Comparison between copolymers made via batch and semicontinuously pointed out that in general the materials made in a batch process have lower viscosity and elasticity than its semicontinuous counterparts.

Notes: The breakdown and repassivation potentials of stainless steel-ceramic prostheses have been determined both in a Hanks' solution and in implants in dogs. These materials show low susceptibility to pitting corrosion as well as a high repassivation capability. The influence of surface roughness, exposure time and homogenization treatment on the pitting corrosion behaviour is studied.

Notes: The corrosion resistance of alumina-covered stainless steel prosthesis is discussed in this report. The test material was an AISI 316L steel with a plasma sprayed on alumina coating, applied directly or through an intermediate nickel base layer, whose mission is to guarantee a perfect adherence between the ceramic material and the steel. Use was made in the laboratory of Hank's solution as test medium since this solution is similar to organic fluids. In order to increase the reliability of the results the simultaneous use of various of the following electrochemical methods are recommended: Determination of corrosion potential with the time, polarization resistance method, coulostatic method and a.c. methods. The use of electrochemical methods to study ceramic-covered stainless steel in the passive state poses some specific difficulties accruing from the disturbance of the working electrode by the applied electrical signals which limit the accuracy of the corrosion rate measurements. These difficulties do not appear in the case of a material having a intermediate layer which is more active.

Notes: A phenomenon of unusual heavy corrosion of hot dip galvanized structural steelwork in a subtropical severe marine atmosphere has been studied. Through the data optained from X-ray diffraction analysis of corrosion products, surrounding soil samples and environmental dust samples, and from SEM observations and EDAX analysis of loose corrosion scale, as well as from the information provided by the metallographic study of galvanized steel sections with different degree of corrosion, a mechanism of attack has been proposed, which accounts for the special environmental factors prevailing on the place.

Notes: A biocdtalytic scheme, based on the enzyme tyrosinase, has been developed for the determination of the antioxidant tert-butylhydroxyanisole (BHA) in food samples. Reversed micelles formed with ethyl acetate as organic solvent, dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) as emulsifying agent, and phosphate buffer of pH 7.4 as aqueous phase, has been employed as the working medium. The potential applied to the tyrosinase electrode, as well as the temperature of the working reversed micelle, the percentage of aqueous phase, and the pH of the phosphate buffer solution have been optimized. The stability of the enzyme electrode with time has been also evaluated. A very good selectivity has been found with respect to potential interference from other substances commonly present in commercial antioxidant mixtures in food. An Eastman-AQ/enzyme immobilization approach has been employed to improve the stability of the tyrosinase biosensor in reversed micelles flowing streams. A flow injection method with amperometric detection for the determination of BHA has been developed and applied to the analysis of this antioxidant in commercial biscuits.

Notes: Optical absorption and photo-luminescence measurements were performed on a series of semiconducting polymers, based upon phenylene linkages, that have discrete emitter units. In these polymers, broken conjugation has been achieved in two ways: by introducing metalinkages between various numbers of para-connected aromatic groups or by severe steric distortion of a fully conjugated main chain. In either case, electronic states are localized on relatively small units, resulting in a large (π, π*) band gap. The band gap decreases with increasing emitter unit conjugation, as expected. Blue light emission was observed from these materials, with the peak emission wavelength red shifted (by greater than 1 eV on average) from the peak absorption. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
