    Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of caffeine are greatly altered by concomitant administration of idrocilamide. In four healthy volunteers id rocilamide inhibited the biotransformation of caffeine and increased its half-life nine times. The untoward neuropsychiatric effects of idrocilamide are the consequence of abnormal accumulation of caffeine in regular consumers of caffeine-containing foods and beverages.

    Notes: Summary Metoclopramide was administered by continuous infusion to two groups each of 14 patients on chemotherapy, randomized to receive either doses adjusted to individual pharmacokinetic parameters or doses adjusted as usual to body weight. The mean plasma concentration at the end of the infusion in the adjusted group was 1.01 mg · 1−1, close to that aimed for (1.20 mg · 1−1). It was significantly different from that in the other group, v0.54 mg · 1−1. Antiemetic efficacy, defined as ⩽2 emetic events in the 24 h following cisplatin, was similar in both groups (being found in 12/14 (86%) and 10/14 patients (71%), respectively). Analysis of the cumulative percentage of responders according to plasma concentration showed a clear plasma concentration-effect relationship. Routine MCP pharmacokinetic dosage adjustment is not indicated, but this therapeutic approach can be used to optimize antiemetic therapy in poor responder patients.

    Notes: The study of collagen fibers by X-ray diffraction, utilizing semiquantitative indices for appraisal of “structuration” and “orientation” was applied to 30 aortic valve grafts. These grafts, of pig origin, were studied in the fresh state, after tanning with aldehydes, and after having been implanted in patients for at least 18 months. It was shown that the collagen fibers are preferentially orientated parallel to the transverse axis of the valve cusps, and that this arrangement, enhanced by tanning, had a tendency to disappear in the post-implantation samples. The structuration index which concerns the fibril network was also augmented by tanning, and was found a little high or slightly diminished in post-implantation cusps. Evidence for a new compound, probably fibrin, was found in the diffraction patterns of implanted cusps, but crystallized calcium was noticeably absent.

    Description / Table of Contents: Das Problem der experimentellen Bestimmung der Polydispersität in der Zusammensetzung statistischer azeotroper Copolymerer wurde mittels Lichtstreuung und Sedimentation im Dichtegradienten untersucht. Dazu dienten zwei statistische Copolymere aus Styrol/Methylmethacrylat. Es wurde besonders gezeigt, daß die Methode der Lichtstreuung zur Bestimmung der Heterogenität geeignet ist, daß aber in der praktischen Ausführung manche Schwierigkeiten bestehen.
    Notes: On a examiné le problème que pose la détermination expérimentale de la polydispersité en composition des copolymères statistiques azéotropes par les méthodes de la diffusion de la lumière et de l'équilibre de sédimentation en gradient de densité. Cette étude a été réalisée sur deux échantillons de copolymères statistiques styrène/méthacrylate de méthyle. On a montré en particulier que la méthode de la diffusion de la lumière reste valable pour déterminer les hétérogénéités en composition mais qu'elle présente certaines difficultés dans sa réalisation pratique.

    Description / Table of Contents: Das Verhalten von niedermolekularem Polyoxyäthylen, gelöst in einem Gemisch von Tetrachlorkohlenstoff und Methanol, wurde durch Lichtstreuungs- und Viskositätsmessungen untersucht.Im gesamten untersuchten Bereich der Zusammensetzung des Tetrachlorkohlenstoff/Methanol-Gemisches wurde beobachtet, daß das Polymere bevorzugt durch den Tetrachlorkohlenstoff solvatisiert wird. Die Viskositätsmessungen zeigten eine Steigerung von [η] in den Gemischen gegenüber der Viskosität in den reinen Lösungsmitteln. Die Viskosität erreicht ein Maximum in dem Gemisch mit 75% Tetrachlorkohlenstoff.Auf Grund der thermodynamischen Eigenschaften des ternären Systems wird versucht, die gefundenen Ergebnisse verständlich zu machen.
    Notes: Nous avons étudié par diffusion de la lumière et viscosité le comportement d'un polyoxyéthylène de faible masse moléculaire en solution dans le mélange tétrachlorure de carbone/méthanol.Nous observons une adsorption préférentielle du tétrachlorure de carbone par le polymère dans tout le domaine de composition étudié. De plus, la viscosité intrinsèque [η] dans les mélanges est supérieure à celle que nous observons dans les solvants purs et passe par un maximum pour le mélange à 75%.Nous avons essayé d'interpréter ces résultats en fonction des propriétés thermodynamiques du système ternaire.
