    Notizen: The effect of modification of the central moiety of the dianhydride residue and isomerism on the gas transport and physical properties were compared for six polyimides containing the hexafluoroisopropylidene group in the diamine residue. Substitution of bulkier groups within the dianhydride residue resulted in disruption of chain packing and slight increases in resistance to chain motions which led to an increase in permeability with little loss in selectivity. The permeabilities and diffusivities in the meta connected polyimide isomers were considerably lower than in the para connected polyimide isomers. Similarly, the permselectivities in the meta connected isomers were consistently higher than in the para connected isomers. These lower permeabilities and higher permselectivities were a result of the more dense packing and a significant suppression of small scale motions in the meta connected isomers. The suppression of segmental mobility in the meta connected isomers was indicated by an increase in the sub Tg transition temperatures in these materials relative to the para connected isomers. The differences in transport properties for these polyimides were attributed to contributions by several factors, including: (1) total free volume (2) distribution of free volume (3) intersegmental resistance to chain motions, and (4) intrasegmental resistance to chain motions. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: 6FDA-pMDA polyimide membranes were implanted with 140 keV N+ ions to fluences between 2 × 1014 and 5 × 1015 cm-2. Variable energy positron annihilation spectra were taken and spectral features compared to previously reported changes in gas permeability and permselectivity of these membranes as a function of ion fluence. Positron data corroborate the explanation of these changes in terms of molecular damage caused by the implant: for fluences up to about 1 × 1015 cm-2, the concentration of irradiation-induced defects merely increases with implant fluence; while fluences exceeding this threshold value create a second type of positron annihilation site, thereby marking a distinct change in the structure of the polymer, which is responsible for the vast improvement of gas permselectivity data found at the same threshold fluence.     Notizen: The normal coordinate analyses of tetramethylthiuram mono-, di-, and tetrasulfides have been carried out by utilizing vibrational energies obtained from infrared and Raman spectroscopic data reported here. The C=S vibration is demonstrated to be highly coupled and to contribute to frequencies in the 850-1000 cm-1 region, but can be identified based on the strong Raman intensity. The results are useful in interpreting the spectra of these complex vulcanizing agents.

    Notizen: The infrared spectra of polyethylene single crystals suspended in liquid are reported and compared to dried mats of the same material. In order to observe the polyethylene bands, liquids with partial windows in complementary regions of the spectra were chosen. Any remaining bands of the suspending media were removed by substraction of the spectrum of the pure liquid. The crystalline bands of suspended polyethylene are much sharper than those of the dried material, indicating a decrease in lateral crystalline order upon drying. Drying also results in a change in the type and distribution of conformations associated with amorphous and fold structures, as determined by the observed frequencies of the methylene wagging mode.

    Notizen: A complex fine structure in the C—H stretching region of the infrared spectrum of deformed polyethylene single crystals is reported. The deformed crystals are shown to be transformed from the orthorhombic crystal form to a monoclinic structure. The previously deduced C2/m monoclinic structure does not account for the appearance of the new bands. An alternative but similar monoclinic structure is proposed. The symmetry of this structure is consistent with the Fermi resonance interactions required for the observation of these bands.

    Notizen: Infrared spectra have been obtained for the crystalline regions of samples of predominantly trans-1,4-polychloroprenes polymerized at -20, 0, and 40°C. Spectral differences among the polychloroprenes are interpreted in terms of the increase in structural irregularities that occur as the polymerization temperature is increased. Results of this study indicate that crystallization occurs with random inclusion of these structural irregularities into the crystalline domains. The conclusion is supported by the spectra of the crystalline regions of a chloroprene copolymer containing known impurities in the form of 2,3-dichloro-2-butenylene units in addition to the normal 2-chloro-2-butenylene units.

    Notizen: Fourier transform infrared studies of the thermal degradation of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) conducted at 200°C in air and under reduced pressure are presented. The spectra are markedly superior to those published previously. A mechanism consistent with the infrared results obtained under reduced pressure is advanced, and assignments for the infrared bands occuring in the spectrum of both the reduced pressure and air degraded PAN are given.

    Notizen: Normal coordinate calculations have been performed for poly(vinylidene chloride) employing a TXTX′ conformational model (X and X′ denote torsional angles of equal value but opposite sign). A valence force field previously determined from the model compounds 2,2-dichloropropane and 2,2-dichlorobutane was directly transferred to the chain conformation of the polymer. The results are in excellent agreement with the observed vibrational spectra and we have been able to satisfactorily assign all the major normal modes.
