    Description: The Palynology of two sections recovered during Leg 93 drilling by the Deep Sea Drilling Project in the continental rise along the western margin of the North Atlantic is reported. In Hole 603B at Site 603, the dinoflagellate stratigraphy indicates that the interval from Cores 603B-82 to 603B-26 ranges in age from late Berriasian to Santonian. The BlakeBahama Formation ranges from late Berriasian to Aptian. The Hatteras Formation ranges from Aptian to Cenomanian, although the uppermost part may be Turonian. Dinoflagellate evidence from the middle part of the Plantagenet Formation indicates an age from late Coniacian or early Santonian to Santonian within the interval of Cores 603B-28 to 603B-26. Magnetic polarity evidence of the stratigraphy of the Early Cretaceous for the western North Atlantic indicates a reliable correlation with the dinoflagellate zonation. The stratigraphic sequence of palynologically defined organic facies in carbonaceous claystone lithologies in Hole 603B shows that organic stratigraphic units consisting predominantly of fecal-pellet-derived, pelagic organic matter (xenomorphic facies) alternate with units consisting predominantly of terrigenous organic matter (tracheal and exinitic facies), corresponding to that described from other sites in the North Atlantic. A terrigenous organic facies is identified for the first time from the Plantagenet Formation. The claystone organic facies and major lithofacies are closely correlated. The tracheal and exinitic facies occur in carbonaceous terrigenous claystones and claystone turbidites associated with sandstone/siltstone terrigenous turbidites. The xenomorphic facies occurs in claystones within pelagic limestones lacking any turbidites, and in blackish, noncalcareous claystones which correlate in age with the marine-carbon-rich sapropels which are widespread in the North Atlantic Cenomanian. This facies also occurs with an admixture of terrigenous organic particles in the Blake-Bahama Formation, but the mixture is consistent with the submarine fan setting of this interval. The concentration of refractory organic matter (carbonized particles) in the micrinitic and carbonized tracheal facies is considered to be the result, at least in part, of the oxidation of sediment buried below a surface slowly accumulating pelagic clays below the carbonate compensation depth. The progressive increase in number of dinoflagellate species per stage through the Early Cretaceous (except for the late Barremian-Aptian) may have resulted indirectly from the generally progressive rise in global sea level during this time. At Site 605, the dinoflagellate stratigraphy across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary is remarkably close to that published from the Maestrichtian and Danian of Denmark. The Maestrichtian/Danian boundary is placed precisely within Section 605-66-1 by dinoflagellate evidence, agreeing with that predicted by other microfossils. The new dinoflagellate-cyst-based genus, Pierceites and its new species P. schizocystis, and the new combination P. ( = Trithyrodinium) pentagonum (May) are proposed. Diacanthum hollisteri Habib, type species of Diacanthum, is emended to accommodat e cysts with the archeopyle formulas P3'', 2P2''-3'', 2P3''-4'', and 3P2''-3''-4''.

    Description: Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the global climate system. This paper presents snow data collected during the past ten years, and reviews major findings. These include: differences in regional and seasonal snow properties and thicknesses; the unique consequences of snow on Antarctic pack ice relative to the Arctic (e.g. the importance of flooding and snow-ice formation); the potential impact if global change increases snowfall; lower observed values of snow thermal conductivity than those used in models; periodic large-scale melt in winter; and the contrast in summer melt in the Antarctic and Arctic. The new findings have significant implications for modelling and remote-sensing studies. Different snow properties from Arctic conditions are recommended for use in Antarctic models; similar differences could affect the interpretation of remote-sensing data over sea ice.

    Notes: In the weak-field limit, laser pulses optimized to induce vibrational wave packet recurrences in excited state potentials were calculated for Morse oscillators and for a real system [the X 1Σ+ and A 3Π(1) states of IBr]. The performance of the optimized pulses was studied via simulated wave packet propagation. Such optimal light fields may be computationally generated given only the form of the electronic potential surfaces, knowledge of the particular ground state supplying population, and simple molecular constants. Thus it should be possible to use the modulation of light fields experimentally optimized to achieve recurrences in order to obtain substantial information regarding previously uncharacterized potential surfaces in both diatomic and polyatomic molecules. Moreover, it should be possible to generalize this approach to the strong-field limit. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recent experimental work in two-dimensional solution NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) has demonstrated anomalous cross-peaks and additional resonances due to dipolar couplings between distant nuclei. These spectra have been analyzed either classically, using Bloch equations which include a mean-field approximation to the demagnetizing field, or quantum mechanically, using a full density matrix picture which shows that the peaks correspond to intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQCs). Here we use a density matrix treatment to predict intensities in solution for dipolar effects conventionally seen in solids; we also explore in detail the fundamental differences between dipolar effects in solids and liquids. For example, even though polarization transfer via the dipolar Hamiltonian in solution is not possible, indirect detection with substantial signal enhancement is possible. We find that, even for high-γ nuclei such as 1H or 3He, solidlike dipolar effects are quite small unless the diffusion constant is roughly one million times smaller than that of water—which means that deviations between the quantum and classical treatments are barely observable in solution NMR, and that even solid 3He has liquidlike dipolar effects in agreement with experiment. However, the dipolar correlation function has an extremely unusual functional form—the long time falloff is proportional to t−3/2, not the exponential one commonly encounters. Because of this long falloff, solidlike dipolar effects can be substantial in solution electron spin resonance, and the classical picture of the demagnetizing field would fail in that case. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Notch pathway is gaining increasing recognition as a key regulator of developmental choices, differentiation, and function throughout the hematolymphoid system. Notch controls the generation of hematopoietic stem cells during embryonic development and may affect their subsequent homeostasis. Commitment to the T??cell lineage and subsequent stages of early thymopoiesis is critically regulated by Notch. Recent data indicate that Notch can also direct the differentiation and activity of peripheral T and B cells. Thus, the full spectrum of Notch effects is just beginning to be understood. In this review, we discuss this explosion of knowledge as well as current controversies and challenges in the field.

    Notes: Cytokines are an integral component of the adaptive and innate immune responses. The signaling pathways triggered by the engagement of cytokines with their specific cell surface receptors have been extensively studied and have provided a profound understanding of the intracellular machinery that translates exposure of cells to cytokine to a coordinated biological response. It has also become clear that cells have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to prevent excessive responses to cytokines. In this review we focus on the suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) family of cytoplasmic proteins that completes a negative feedback loop to attenuate signal transduction from cytokines that act through the janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway. SOCS proteins inhibit components of the cytokine signaling cascade via direct binding or by preventing access to the signaling complex. The SOCS proteins also appear to target signal transducers for proteasomal destruction. Analyses of genetically modified mice in which SOCS proteins are overexpressed or deleted have established that this family of negative regulators has indispensable roles in regulating cytokine responses in cells of the immune system as well as other tissues. Emerging evidence also suggests that disruption of SOCS expression or activity is associated with several immune and inflammatory diseases, raising the prospect that manipulation of SOCS activity may provide a novel future therapeutic strategy in the management of immunological disorders.
