    Notes: Abstract Solutions of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation yield potential profiles and equilibrium distributions of ions on either side of a spherical shell membrane across which there exists a separation of ionic charges. For the special case in which the membrane is permeable to only one ion the total charge separation is analyzed in terms of the potential difference given by the Nernst equation. Potential profiles and ionic charge distributions are also given for situations involving a uniform distribution of fixed charges within the membrane.

    Notes: Abstract Because of the “all-or-none” character of nervous activity, neural events and the relations among them can be treated by means of propositional logic. It is found that the behavior of every net can be described in these terms, with the addition of more complicated logical means for nets containing circles; and that for any logical expression satisfying certain conditions, one can find a net behaving in the fashion it describes. It is shown that many particular choices among possible neurophysiological assumptions are equivalent, in the sense that for every net behaving under one assumption, there exists another net which behaves under the other and gives the same results, although perhaps not in the same time. Various applications of the calculus are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Phosphoroguanidates, a class of compounds which includes the enzymatically-active phosphagens, exhibit exceptionalin vitro stability. This lack of reactivity implies anin vivo mode of activation, as yet undiscerned. A variety of metal ions catalyse the cleavage of the phosphorus-nitrogen bond with consequent phosphoryl-group transfer, but the enhancement of rate seems insufficient to account for the known activities of phosphoro-creatine and phosphoro-arginine. It is suggested that yet another mode of activation, chemical or biochemical, awaits discovery.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine früher abgeleitete [2] monotone nichtwachsende Folge von Näherungslösungen für das Druckgefässproblem wird modifiziert, zur Gewinnung neuer schärferer oberer Schranken. Zusätzlich wird, mittels einer Sekantenmethode, eine nicht abnehmende Folge von Approximationen der unteren Schranke erhalten. Es wird bewiesen, dass diese Folge gleichmässig konvergiert und dass sie neue untere Schranken für die exakte Lösung liefert. Diese Ergebnisse werdenn dann verwendet, um Abschätzungen für den Zeitpunkt zu finden, in dem der Bruchschaden beginnt.
    Notes: Abstract A previously derived [2] monotone non-increasing sequence of approximate solutions to the pressure vessel problem is modified to produce new sharper upper bounds. In addition, by means of a secant method, a monotone non-decreasing sequence of lower bound approximations is obtained. It is proved that this sequence is uniformly convergent and that it furnishes new lower bounds to the exact solution. These results are then used to obtain estimates for the time of initiation of brittle damage.

Es handelt sich dabei um eine andere Integral-Abschätzung, als sie früher von Edelstein [2] aufgestellt wurde. Sie führt direkt zu einer punktweisen Abschätzung für die Verzerrungen.
    Notes: Summary For a viscoelastic beam loaded at one end and otherwise traction-free, it is shown that a certain integral measure of the strain in that portion of the beam at a distance greater than or equal tos decays exponentially with increasings. This is a different integral decay estimate from that obtained previously by Edelstein [2] and leads immediately to a pointwise decay estimate for strains.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird mit Hilfe von Gegenbeispielen gezeigt, dass die Annahme eines stark elliptischen Tensors der Elastizitätsmoduln für Spannungsaufgaben und gemischte Probleme der linearen Elastizität und sogar für das Verschiebungsproblem im Fall eines inhomogenen Körpers keine Eindeutigkeit garantiert. Für den Spezialfall eines isotropen Materials mit verschwindender Kompressibilität wird ein Ausdruck für die allgemeinste (nicht-eindeutige) Lösung des Spannungsproblems bei verschwindenden Oberflächenspannungen gegeben.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das Problem des Kriechens in symmetrischen Druckgefässen führt auf eine nichtlineare Integralgleichung. Zum Beweis der Existenz einer Lösung dieser Gleichung wird rekursiv eine Folge von Näherungslösungen konstruiert. Es wird gezeigt, dass diese Folge monoton und gleichmässig nach der Lösung der Integralgleichung konvergiert.
    Notes: Abstract Existence of a solution to a nonlinear integral equation arising in the theory of creep in symmetric pressure vessels is established by means of a recursively defined sequence of functions. It is shown that this sequence converges monotonically and uniformly to the solution.
