Aliphatic Azo Compounds, VI 1). - Steric Acceleration of Azoalkane ThermolysisThe influence of the size of the side chains R1-R3) on the thermolysis constants of tert-azoalkanes 8 has been compared with the corresponding influence of R1-R3 on the rates of solvolysis of tert-alkyl-p-nitrobenzoates 9 (in 80 vol.- % acetone/water) and tert-alkyl chlorides 10 (in 80 vol.-% acetone/water). The correlations of the rate constants in Figures 1 and 2 are presumed to express the action of back-strain. After correction for the multiplicative back-strain effect on the thermolysis rates of 8 the slopes of the correlations indicate a some-what larger back-strain effect on the solvolysis than on the thermolysis reactions. This is additional evidence for the one step thermolysis mechanism of 8. Deviations from the correlations are discussed by front-strain and solvation effects. The azo alkanes 8 are radical initiators for the temperature range 140-200°C and photoinitiators.
Notes:
