Description: The 25-mm microchannel-plate, position-sensitive UV astronomy photomultiplier tube presented is intended for the EOM-1 Spacelab Mission's FAUST payload and conducts wide-field imaging surveys in the VUV over the 1400-1800-A range. The sealed detector encompasses a CsI photocathode deposited on the inner surface of a MgF2 window, a stack of microchannel plates, and a wedge-and-strip two-dimensional position-sensing anode. Since the wedge-and-strip principle requires only three anode signals, flight electronics can be reduced to three charge amplifiers and three analog-to-digital converters.

Description: The arrays are overcoated with a CsI photocathode in the VUV. The measurements are part of the development program for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer. Monochromatic light from a hollow cathode discharge source passing through a McPherson grazing incidence monochromator is used to illuminate the CsI photocathode. The beam diameter is kept small (approximately 2 mm) to confine it within the individual thickness strips. A bias grid is used to produce a 50-V/mm electric field to guarantee collection of all photoelectrons emitted by the CEMA (channel electron multiplier array) webbing. The CEMAs are operated with a gain of 2-3 x 10 to the 6th and are moderately saturated. A channeltron secondary transfer standard is used to determine the absolute QE in the EUV, whereas an NBS calibrated windowed photodiode is used to measure the FUV absolute QE. It is noted that the CsI gives a factor of 3 increase in the QE in the EUV and a factor of 50-5000 in the FUV.

Description: The present paper deals with a modified Penning discharge lamp developed specially to cover the soft X-ray and extreme UV spectral regions. The source produces a total of nearly 40 intense lines in the 50 to 300 A range. The lamp is quiet, continuous, and stable over most of the cathode lifetime (which is sufficient for long calibration runs). When the cathodes become exhausted, the refurbishment procedure is so simple that the source can be back on line in an hour or less

Description: A grazing incidence one-dimensional focusing collector for use in the extreme ultraviolet is described. The collector has a field of view of 1 x 50 deg, a focal length of 3015 cm, and a total unobstructed area of 224 sq cm. The instrument employs an interchangeable detector package of either channel-electron multipliers or proportional counters which yield a limiting sensitivity of 1.0 photons/sq cm sec A at 170 A and 0.05 photons/sq cm sec A at 90 A, respectively, for one second integrations. The design and calibration of the instrument are described in detail. Data obtained by this instrument during recent rocket flights are presented.

Description: A normal incidence spectrometer for use in the wavelength region from 200 to 1270 A has been developed. The design and calibration of the instrument are described in detail. The spectrometer can be employed to detect extreme UV radiation at a minimum flux level of 1 rayleigh with a spectral resolution of 40 A and a spatial resolution of 6 deg. Data on the extreme UV night sky spectrum between 780 and 1270 A obtained with this instrument on a recent rocket flight are presented.

Description: Microchannel plate (MCP) detector systems that use wedge and strip anodes for imaging radiation in the range 50 A to 8000 A are described. Test data, obtained from the calibration of the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite detectors and the ARIA EUV aeronomy sensor is presented. The long-term performance characteristics of Z-stack microchannel plates are investigated and it is shown that stable operation is achieved after an initial settling period. Conventional and new anode designs and their potential for increasing the position resolution are discussed. Position resolution of better than 80 microns FWHM has been attained for 50 mm devices, and this is shown to be essentially independent of event location. Image nonlinearity of less than 0.3 percent has been achieved with stability to better than 0.1 percent. Differential nonlinearity of less than 1 percent and stability to better than 1 percent have been obtained. Measurements of the quantum efficiency of a CsI photocathode on an MCP are presented, demonstrating efficiencies as high as 47 percent.

Description: A photometer sensitive in the 584-A line of He I, incorporating a helium-gas absorption cell, has been developed. The helium is confined at a pressure of 0.2 torr between thin-metal-foil broad-band ultraviolet filters. The cell contains sufficient helium to absorb 584-A radiation scattered from atmospheric helium. The ratio of fluxes seen with the cell full and empty provides a valuable datum for fitting models of the local interstellar medium, which is independent of solar 584-A flux, interstellar helium density, and photometer sensitivity.-
