Notes: The synthesis of styrene monomers 5(G-1,2,3) with Fréchet-type dendrons of the first, second and third generation, and their radically initiated polymerization to result in high molecular weight dendrimers 6(G-1,2,3) are reported. First light-scattering investigations using 6(G-2) show that this polymer is best described as a Gaussian chain.

Notes: The synthesis of some alternating copolymers from a tert-butyl(dimethyl)silyl protected hydroxymethyl substituted [1.1.1]propellane and acrylates carrying Fréchet-type dendrons of the first and second generation is described. A copolymer with a second generation dendron at every repeat unit was obtained with M̄w = 43700 as determined via gel permeation chromatography.

Notes: A convenient and practical multi-gram procedure for the synthesis of second- (G2; 4a, 5a, 5d) and third-generation (G3; 6a) dendrons with orthogonally protected functional groups in the periphery (hydroxy) and at the focal point (carboxylic acid) is described. It uses the amply available first-generation dendrons with amine and carboxylic ester functions (1) and tetrahydropyranyl-protected hydroxy and carboxylic acid functions (2b, 3), respectively, which are connected via amides by peptide methods. Purification is either done by recrystallization or simple filtration through silica gel and yields the products as analytically pure materials on a several-gram scale (even for G3). ‘The dendrons’ protective groups are proven to be orthogonal (500-MHz NMR) which makes them useful components (building blocks) of a future dendron construction kit for a versatile synthesis of, for example, dendronized polymers.

Notes: Synthesis of the hydroxyethyl-substituted poly(para-phenylene) 2b employing Suzuki polycondensation is described. This PPP derivative is used as a matrix for the attachment of first- and second-generation dendrons of the Fréchet-type with isocyanate functions at the focal point. The degree of coverage is determined from NMR integration to be virtually 100% in both cases.

Notes: The anthracenedifuran precursor 7 was obtained in a short sequence from its lower homologue 1. On thermal treatment, 7 generates the highly Diels-Alder (DA)-active anthracenodifuran “8”. Its bisdiene character is proved by trapping with diquinone 9, which gives the [9]cyclacene derivative 10 and oligomeric material.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Synthese eines Diels-Alder-Leiterpolymers mit Imino- und Etherbrücken wird beschrieben.
Notes: The synthesis of a Diels-Alder ladder polymer with imino and ether bridges is described. The structure proof is based upon a comparison of its high resolution 13C-NMR spectrum with those of model compounds. The molecular weights can reach values as high as M̄n = 52000 which are the highest ones observed so far for a double stranded polymer. The X-ray structure of model compound 8 is also presented.

Notes: This article provides an overview on a new and easy to perform Ni-and Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of various kinds of homo- and heteroaromatic monomers. It allows the regiospecific coupling of these monomers at predetermined positions to furnish the corresponding structurally perfect polyarylenes, which up to now have only been known as ill-defined, generally insoluble and infusible materials. The compatibility of this method towards functional groups is excellent. The achievable degrees of polymerization range from 20 to 60. The solubility and characterizability of the polymers is ensured, if necessary, by the attachment of flexible alkyl, tert.-butyl, or alkoxy chains to the monomers. Results of initial physicochemical measurements with some of the polymers and their respective model compounds are briefly discussed. They do not only give vital clues to the intrinsic properties of poly- and oligoarylenes but also disclose exciting, unprecedented properties of these materials.

Notes: The chain stiffness of a methoxypropyl-substituted poly[1.1.1]propellane in solution is investigated by static and dynamic light scattering. The Kuhn statistical segment length is determined as lk=150Å utilizing the Kratky-Porod wormlike chain model. It is, however, not yet clear whether the derived Kuhn length characterizes the chain stiffness of a perfect polypropellane chain or rather originates from “kinks” in the polymer backbone due to the presence of possible side reactions during polymerization.

Notes: The synthesis of dendronized acrylate and styrene monomers with Fréchet-type as well as urethane-based dendrons of the first and second generation and their radically initiated polymerization to the high molecular weight dendrimers 6(G-1,2) and 8a(G-2) is reported. The latter polymer carries four THP-protected hydroxy functions per repeat unit whose quantitative deprotection is also described.
