    Notes: Summary pKa-Values of lysine residues of mammalian metallothionein were determined by chemical titration measurements of ɛ-CH2 lysine resonances in the1H-NMR spectra. They are about 0.5 pH-unit higher than the average pKa-value of a metal-free derivative, suggesting interaction of the positively charged residues with the two three-fold negatively charged metal-thiolate clusters of the metal-containing form. Deprotonation of the lysines leads to circular dichroism changes attributable to an electrostatically induced structural transition of the protein.

    Notes: This paper demonstrates a novel operating mode of an ion mobility detector (IMD) for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data after capillary gas chromatographic separation of 5,5′-disubstituted barbiturates. Using a recently developed time dispersive Fourier transform method for ion mobility spectrometry, complete ion mobility spectra could be obtained for each component in the chromatogram. This type of spectra can be used for providing qualitative information on unknown compounds or for selecting the proper detector conditions needed when operating in the continuous mobility monitoring mode.In this study each of the five barbiturates investigated produced a Fourier transformed ion mobility spectrum containing one major product ion. When drift times corresponding to those of the product ions measured in the FT mode were monitored continuously, selective chromatographic detection of the barbiturates was achieved. In one case even isomers could be differentiated based on mobility characteristics.

    Description: The first observations of long period low order global solar oscillations grew out of diameter measurements made over an extended period of time. As a result of these investigations, a detailed understanding of the surface properties of the oscillations evolved, allowing development of a second generation detector. This new detector, currently under development directly utilizes various surface properties of the oscillations and does not, therefore, directly involve diameter measurements. The specifications of the detector, its supporting telescope and the observing program are reviewed.

    Description: Solar oscillations are manifested in the solar atmosphere as spatial and temporal perturbations in the local thermodynamical and mechanical properties. When measuring the solar radius/diameter, these perturbations enter the observation through changes in the radiative source function and opacity at the extreme limb. When compared to the disk center, the observable portion of these perturbations is changed in spatial character by projection effects and oblique optical depth geometry. The time varying solar radius signal at SCLERA (Santa Catalina Laboratory for Experimental Relativity) is produced by an edge definition sensitive to the resultant changes in the spatial shape of the limb intensity profile. An attempt is made to further determine the shape and properties of the limb signals which display global solar oscillations.

    Description: Solar luminosity variations occurring during solar cycle 21 can be attributed in large part to the presence of sunspots and faculae. Nevertheless, there remains a residual portion of the luminosity variation distinctly unaccounted for by these phenomena of solar activity. At the Santa Catalina Laboratory for Experimental Relativity by Astrometry (SCLERA), observations of the solar limb are capable of detecting changes in the solar limb darkening function by monitoring a quantity known as the differential radius. These observations are utilized in such a way that the effects of solar activity are minimized in order to reveal the more fundamental structure of the photosphere. The results of observations made during solar cycle 21 at various solar latitudes indicate that a measurable change did occur in the global photospheric limb darkening function. It is proposed that the residual luminosity change is associated in part with this change in limb darkening.

    Description: Focus is given to possible variations in solar luminosity and accurate methods of monitoring it. Aside from direct bolometry, one methodology for this type of research makes use of measurements of the solar diameter and limb darkening function as indirect indicators of the solar luminosity. This approach was reviewed.

    Description: Variability in solar shape and diameters was examined as a possible probe of an important climatic driving function, solar luminosity variability. The techniques and facilities developed for measuring the solar diameter were used. The observing program and the requisite data reduction were conducted simultaneously. The development of a technique to calibrate the scale in the telescope field progressed to the design and construction phase.
